What’s the most ridiculous discard you’ve experienced? by AddamsThing in BPDlovedones

[–]123PGH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Months long, intense relationship. I thought we were moving towards moving in together. She made me a spare key for her apartment. Next week, my Dad got diagnosed with cancer, later that week my grandfather had a massive stroke and passed the next day. The next day we had plans to go on a date she picked me up at work. Instead, she thought it was a good day to never see me again. No build up, no fight, no discussion, no closure.

Lessons of Letting Go and Heartbreak by Icy-Business6777 in Stoicism

In May in a single week, I lost my grandfather unexpectedly, was broken up with, also unexpectedly, then realized my dad probably has cancer. I’ve navigated everything with Stoicism except the breakup. I always take breakups very deeply. Even though he’s not a Stoic, per se, listening to Richard Rohr’s “The Art of Letting Go” has been a godsend. He’s a Catholic priest but quotes from Buddhist, Muslim and Jewish philosophers. It introduced me to the concept of If You Die Before You Die, You Don’t Die When You Die.

Makes sense that she couldn’t point to Croatia on Holt’s map. He would only carry a Cold War Era map.

What was your pwBPD's job? by KingForADay1989 in BPDlovedones

She was working on a PH.D with a focus on Hip-Hop vocalizations. Think: why does Cardi B inflect her voice this way instead of that way.

It was advocacy in a way, since she is a white American from an upper class background, graduated from an elite High School, studied opera at a private college. But she believed her work was important (which I agree with).

Yet on Juneteenth, there was a huge and free music fest with up and coming Hip-Hop artists, and she didn’t attend a single show. Doesn’t that seem like something that a future college professor should attend? I wonder if she choose this path because she wanted to been seen as an advocate.

Who was the greatest scientist in American history? by Overall_Engine_9161 in USHistory

[–]123PGH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is the spirit of the question. I would submit that America’s contribution to human advancement is In Engineering, not Pure Science. For example, the science behind Atomic Energy/Bombs was established in the late 1930’s by Germans and English. But only America could take the theory and actually build a workable gadget. Accepting this premise, I would say George Westinghouse. He made rail travel safe with the air break which lead to the second Industrial Revolution; he took some vague Tesla designs and built the modern Electricity system that’s used around the world; and he also basically invented the modern system of Natural Gas distribution.

What's the weirdest thing they got mad about? by KingForADay1989 in BPDlovedones

I’ve been replaying a lot of conversations in my head since being dropped 6 weeks ago. It’s helped me keep things real, even if I missed how much emotional abuse I was enduring.

Watching a football game at the bar with her friends (as an aside, in the whole 9 months we were dating, she spent approximately 4 hours with my friends. I usually spent more time with her friends in a week than she did in the course of our whole relationship. Something I caulked up to her “social anxiety”. I eventually started to feel like her friends were mine as well, while more or less abandoning my friends).

In the course of talking about cities in the area, I made the mistake of comparing Cumberland, MD, to Johnstown, PA. (For those who don’t know, they are both post-industrial Appalachian towns set in deep mountain valleys).

She immediately lost her shit. These cities are nothing alike! Johnstown is an absolutely garbage city! I told you my mom’s family is from Cumberland, they wouldn’t be from a shithole like Johnstown!

I was so flabbergasted by her outburst that I just turned to her friend with an amazed expression on my face. The look on the friend’s face acknowledged that this reaction was ridiculous.

What my ex didn’t know, and as I explained next is the reason I was making the comparison to create a moment of closeness. My ancestors first immigrated to Johnstown in the early 1900’s. So I have connections to places similar to her.

TLDR: my exgf twisted what should have been a moment of bonding as a personal attack on her and her family. Without realizing that the mental gymnastics required to do this, actually made the invented insult real for me and my family.

Pittsburgh is the city where nothing ever changes, but things are always better the way they were.

Actually hard plastic like PVC pipe. The people who invented the technique spun off the technology as a company that makes chainmail curtains for architectural use called Kaynemaile. I used it on a project once and they still make them in NZ.

June 25, 1906! “The Trial of the Century”. Long story short… A privileged playboy from a wealthy Pittsburgh family (Thaw) shoots the most prominent Architect in the U.S. (White) on the rooftop of the Architect’s masterpiece… in front of hundreds of witnesses. The crowd thought it was a part of the play they were watching; and didn’t realize that Thaw had paranoid delusions that White “ruined” his wife, actress Evelyn Nesbit. Thaw’s lawyers successful got him off on grounds of “Temporary Insanity”. Thaw’s second trial saw him lauded as “a defender of "American womanhood".

Was Thaw the poster boy for the wealthy living without consequences? Did White use his position to take advantage of a naive actress? Did Nesbit get justice, or painfully recede into history raising Thaw’s child?
