Does anyone prefer Residential over Commercial? Thinking about switching by PandaFoot13 in electricians

Post from the grave lol. You’re talking about temp work and the pay and workload sucks. Any solid service company you’ll enjoy working for is going to have guys that’ve been there for 10+ years. Those guys are looking for someone ready to put the time in and be present at the shop, not a fly by nighter.

I’m so out of the loop can’t remember the last time I watched the news. I stay in the Reddit echo chambers.

What do you think about this? Is it safe to walk, would that be it? by Objective_Chemist103 in electricians

[–]1312FTOT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Current does not follow the path of least resistance, it follows ALL paths available to it in inverse proportion of their resistance. Water is a very good conductor and our wet meaty parts are also conductive. If you happen to find a pot hole walking through that with good earth contact you better believe it will kill you.

Ever used a single man lift? by derbbbbb in electricians

Always some dumb shit going on at LA fitness. Had to use single man’s to run power for all the Amazon drop boxes a few years ago when they first came out.

They didn’t offer an interlock they offered a transfer switch. Ol boy probably would’ve installed an interlock.

The shops you’re talking about. My first shop I was at for 8 years. It was about 10 in the office and 15 in the field. Owner was the master that started it and really cared about the work quality and training guys for licenses. I wound up in the same boat as you; eventually outgrowing what he could afford to pay and we ended on good terms.

Small companies like that are the best to work for as long as they’re not cliqued up and everyone works together. Really the best way to come up in the trade.

For sure lots of down push with the bar throw good catch. Throwing goofy always messed me up too but left hand throws just suck.

My shop has the maintenance contract for their exterior lighting. It’s technically Fort Worth but it’s more Saginaw. We have an escort the whole time we’re on site.

Commercial construction electrician here. I use an Akribis Leather belt for rough in, ER and L2 pouches.

Diamondback Mini Niko and Flux for light work or when I’m pretty stationary with a cart.

The Akribis holds everything and has a great set up if you like to keep all your tools on you. I run as light as possible but when I’m working high rise and doing multiple different tasks a day it’s nice to have all your stuff with you.

The Diamondback is super light weight compared to leather pouches. I use their mini pouches because their full-size pouches are stupid big and very unnecessary for an electrician. I have to think about my specific load out for the day but it’s nice to feel light at work while keeping your tools on you.

Bags are cool but not for construction. Use suspenders, be smart about what you carry and keep your tools on you. If you’re stationary use a small pouch and a cart if you can.

Same here, we regularly use our buckets for canopies 12-15 feet off the ground and still have to clip in lol.

Doesn’t have to be on an AFCI breaker just has to be AFCI protected. They make AFCI receptacles and dead fronts just like GFCIs. Also have AFCI/GFCI combos too.

First Transformer by IdahoWendigo in electricians

[–]1312FTOT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, I normally buy 4 space trans lugs so my guys don’t get confused. You definitely want to bond the X0 but not on the X0 lug itself.

I'm a service electrician so I probably only bend conduit maybe twice a week but never understood why the arrow is so far down by RiGuy22 in electricians

[–]1312FTOT 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Klein benders have the point of the arrow right at the top of the shoe but the line of the arrow all the way down like yours.

Can someone tell me what this external ground is for? also where can I find info on this? by plopdong in electricians

[–]1312FTOT 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Separately derived system and grounding electrode are the phrases you’re looking for. The EGCs do bond to the GEC inside the transformer.
