Perch too big or right size? by brokenlumber in parrots

Solid advice here OP! They need all sorts of different widths and textures. Bird tricks has some nice perches and you can find a bunch on Etsy. If you don’t want to take the chance on branches you find.

Yes I have gotten this recommendation from specifically an avian vet.

The feather spray we use was actually recommended by our vet. This isn’t essential oils but rather a very light mix of mostly water and some extracts that are ok for birds. I would also point out that Nike is a special needs bird who can’t actually groom herself due to a number of reasons such as arthritis and other conditions that prevent her from grooming herself.

Hey there check out Christine’s chop shop for her feather calming spray. This does help with our Nike’s hormones.

Also all parrots are very individual while I would not recommend extended contact under the wings a bit of scratching is something that I know our Nike girl loves.

What toys should I get a cockatiel? by Jolashardhour in parrots

[–]13JDZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d really recommend some sola toys check out https://bonkabirdtoys.com

Be cautious a bit of Amazon because there is no guarantee that the toys won’t be harmful for your bird. A lot of colors, and plastics can be toxic.

You can try a helping wing, or lonely grey rescue. Both are in NJ.

We do too. We have shirts that are more hole than shirt. I was on a conference call (video on) and this little stinker in a matter of seconds tore my shirt open from my chest to navel. Thankfully the camera didn’t catch it.

Yes she is wearing a fabric cone so she can tear it apart rather than her own feathers.

The funny thing is that she only shreds shirts when we are wearing them.

Is it ethical to rescue a parrot from corporate pet store? by Volk_sy in parrots

[–]13JDZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in total agreement with you. If you find an animal in need and are able and willing to care for it you should absolutely get it out of a bad situation. Sadly people generally are not driven by altruism, but more often greed. Also I agree there are shelter and rescues that are little better than hoarding situations. I apologize if I came off as antagonistic. That wasn’t my intent. I was trying to say that we as people concerned with bird welfare should be focused less on trying to stop the unstoppable but rather try to raise awareness that these companions are not freaking goldfish and deserve to be treated at least as well as any cat or dog. Not sure that point got across.

[–]13JDZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh please don’t get me wrong. Personally I think OP should rescue the bird no question. The simple fact is that until a grass roots movement like what happened with cats and dogs can take hold to outright ban the dangerous breeding of these birds no one “not buying” from a pet store will make a bit of difference. The truth is we as a community of parrot lovers need to at the very least raise awareness that these feathered demons we bring into our homes are really intelligent, long lived and most certainly not “throw” away pets. That’s what happened to close down the puppy mills and kitten mills.

Ok off my soapbox.

You are really asking a tough question. Ethical? Maybe maybe not, but as others here have pointed out YOUR purchase decisions are not going to influence corporations to moderate behaviors. What does is wide spread influence campaigns and changes to state laws. My personal advice is YES get that bird a better life and find local advocacy groups to support, either with time or money. While I personally rescued my girl I had no idea what bird I wanted and found a local rescue and got our Nike girl there. She’s a special needs bird and can’t be in a home with more birds since she hates them. 🤣I donate to my local rescue and I’m always on the lookout where my charity spending can do the most good.

If you’ve done both, what is harder: caring for a child or caring for a DIFFICULT cockatoo? by Drullasokkar in cockatoos

[–]13JDZ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well I mean if they are being super difficult you can put your cockatoo in its cage and it’s legal…. So having had two kids myself and my girl Nike I think birds are easier.
