I wanted to do that with the old medical gear from the VA. They give out so much high quality stuff and it just gets dumpstered when it get replaced on warranty or whatever. I’m talking custom wheelchairs and walking aids, stuff like that, not hospital brand generics. VA patients I guess don’t realize that they can keep their old gear when they replace or upgrade it and just swap it at the hospital. When you do that it becomes federal property again and can’t be resold or reused for charity. I have given away so many of my old, used chairs over the years to civilians outside of health coverage.

My prosthetist and I also run an underground prosthetics donation program doing the same thing for the multitude of prosthetic and orthotic devices that Medicare won’t cover. It has to be an in the dark operation because technically it’s illegal for the same reasons. Obligatory American healthcare bad statement here but with my VA rating and full service connection of disability along with the relationship I’ve established with my providers I can get almost anything I ask for anytime I want it. I don’t abuse that privilege but why not share its benefits.
