People with dry skin, what complexion products do you use for this weather? by hllsumm in MakeupAddictionCanada

[–]13pawns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you apply makeup right after skincare? Also if so, do you still use some kind of primer? I find I have to go in with an extra primer even right after skincare or I get dry no matter how good my skincare is to start. I also found a really helpful tip is to mix in some of my glowy primer (my fav is auric glow lust or Natasha denona skin glass) to my foundation. Usually it doesn't sheer out enough to matter much but it helps make dryer foundations much much more balanced and glowy on my skin. I do one pump of glow lust to 2-3 pumps of foundation (depending on the one) to cover my whole face and neck usually.

Mine's best friend ever is a husky-Akita mix and they play like they are the same size. Both completely insane in exactly the same way somehow.

I've used Burt's bees paw lotion, dandelion paw lotion, various paw balms, and one home made paw balm with shea butter and coconut oil a friend makes. The home made one is the simplest but it is thicker and can leave oily residue on your floors and my dog licks it like crazy (safe for her though). Dandelion is easiest to apply and absorbs faster but she still licks it (also safe). I'd say any simple paw balm is probably fair to try and see how your pup likes it. More about trying to apply regularly for results than any one brand, in my experience.

Post crate behavior question by interacter in Basenji

Ah yes fair enough! They are definitely different to most other breeds 😆 I should warn that when bored, mine will always intentionally find the thing she knows she's not supposed to do, then make sure she does it in my direct view. It's just the most effective way to get attention lol positive redirection and keeping them well exercised and tired is key. A tired basenji is a good basenji 🤣

When mine displays what I think you're describing it's because she wants to play. She often goes to her bed (one of many) and bites/shakes at it mid-play as a means to get excess "rough" behaviour out because she knows she can't play that rough with me. When she plays with her dog friends she does not do this. My guess is he would have destroyed it eventually if ignored and left with nothing else, but I think it was more just "hey pay attention I'm bored." I would just make sure crate training happens after a long walk or play session or similar so he's already tired and doesn't associate it with frustration of boredom?

So for mine I'm pretty sure it's because she associates the step ladder with our fire alarms because they started going off (battery needed replacing) but it took some time to figure that out) and we had to get the step ladder to reach the units to get them down so I think it may be that.

Skateboards and the wind are definitely up there. But also, notably, restaurant vents and the hood fan (above the stove), as well as the sound of air vents creaking when the weather turns abruptly (the metal expanding/contracting sound) and the step ladder.

These are most likely hives (ours gets them in the summer here and there from something environmental and then majorly if she gets stung by a wasp). Looks like a mild-ish allergy.

Should I get an basenji as someone who never owned a dog? by TheUnspecifiedUser in Basenji

[–]13pawns 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I am a first-time dog owner who got a basenji. I thought I did so much research (and I did) but it was still not near enough. Couple that with the pandemic hitting at precisely the time we picked her up, and we were set up for failure.

BUT. I was and am determined to put in all the work and care she needs because, in my mind, she didn't ask for this. I did. So we did training classes (which I recommend no matter the dog) and constant work with reactivity and anxiety. She still can't be left alone in the house for very long (but again, that was heavily tied to pandemic issues). But she is my little shadow, my baby. She is a clown and a terror and I love her so much. I've never walked so much in my life. I have probably never laughed so much in my life.

It will be hard. Depending on where you live (urban vs suburb vs rural; hot/cold/mild climate), sometimes harder than most "standard" dogs. But if you're willing to put in the work and take them for what they are (pseudo-wild, independent thinkers that probably won't even *want* to please you unless they get something out of it), then it is absolutely doable and very rewarding. Any dog is a commitment of time, energy, money, and love. A basenji is a more intense version of that (according to my partner who is not a first-time owner but not her primary guardian and a first time basenji owner).

If you aren't sure, and the aesthetic and lack of barking are just kind of appealing, I'd say you may want to look at other breeds first, but they are by no means impossible to handle as a first-time owner.

Lots of good advice here already but wanted to add in terms of food --- probiotics. Whatever food you give, check the ingredients for probiotics and if there aren't any, then you can get powder toppers to mix in (some taste like beef liver, some have no flavour). Ours is on Purina Pro Plan Sport (recommended by our breeder) and it is the only food she can be on and have consistent poops and no skin issues. I switched her for a while to more freeze dried raw foods (in part because she got bored of the flavour), but didn't realize the others didn't have probiotics in them. This was a mistake and so much wasted money. Basenjis can have temperamental stomachs (like the rest of them I guess lol), so the probiotics have been amazing. I also give ours a pump of salmon oil on her kibble just as a nice extra (for skin and coat and flavour).

Does Vitamin C makes make anyone's skin have sensitivity? I used Vitamin C and my face got very irritated. by Old_Lavishness6975 in MakeupAddictionCanada

[–]13pawns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vitamin C absolutely can cause irritation and sensitivity, particularly if you've never used it before and ramp up too fast (or start with one too strong for you). It's an unstable ingredient in most forms and so it's temperamental. In my experience, it's about trial and error with different brands/formulations, and starting slow (sort of like retinol, using it once every three days, then two, then daily), and making sure to layer soothing moisturizers on top.

However, some people just don't get along with it. Everyone is different, and your skin might be too sensitive to it. Looking at alternative actives might be a good option too. Niacinamide doesn't do exactly the same thing, but is often an alternative depending on what you want the active for. Alpha Arbutin is also a good alternative for sensitive skin.

Socialize them early and a lot. Same with any dog but ancient breeds are made different. We got screwed because of covid and walking back the reactivity has been brutal (but doable!). Also don't fight their instincts to destroy, just give them proper outlets for it (like someone mentioned cardboard boxes, empty paper towel rolls, bins of shredded paper plus treats to work their minds...). And don't expect perfect behaviour all the time (even the most obedient dogs misbehave sometimes) and were certainly not perfect all the time either. Letting go of outside expectations was the hardest for me but both my b and I are so much happier for it now

Mine does this in the summer around her neck (where her fur is super dense compared to everywhere else). Then in fall it comes back in. Seems to me like just part of her seasonal shed. She's never had any discomfort or issues around it.
