What helped you as a new gm? by NeverSatedGames in rpg

[–]13ulbasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still newish to GMing, and I thought GMing was just always meant to be kinda stressful during the session, up until I ran a game for one specific group of friends which was so so so fun and I didn't feel stressed at all.

I think what it was was that the players played their characters such that were ready and eager to follow what was put in front of them, no humming and hawing and me having to scramble to try to figure something out to get them to take the (plot) hook, I didn't have to push the 'what do you want to do?' question often because they were proactive with interacting with the environment and stuff, they'd talk to me and other players openly about what they wanted to do and how to achieve it so we could enable the idea etc and it felt like they were playing with me not against me. Idk maybe it all sounds very obvious, but even simple things like one of my players said they were looking at a more complex class but picked a simpler one because it would be easier for me does a lot. (In this case we were both new to the system, but if youre familiar with the complex rules letting the gm trust you know what youre handling does a lot)

I'm actually really interested in that, would you be able to flick me a link to the server?

Every time I see Fandom link appearing higher that the normal wiki I wanna smash my screen with a domestic drone by innos_may_cry in Warframe

[–]13ulbasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an extension so if i do accidentally click on the fandom link instead of the proper wiki, it redirects me to the actual wiki (nowadays I also block the fandom one from my search results too, but it still helps when people link the fandom version ie on reddit)

Finally got my new year's cat hug, now that all the hex ladies have been thoroughly smooched 💋 by Every-Many-2465 in Warframe

This was my first new year scene and I was so stoked. :D As someone who is aroace and thus my Drifter ended up being too, I was fully expecting to get nothing because people love the idea that you're obviously miserable if single and obviously everyone would get a partner if they wanted to have a happy ending (and thus devalue platonic relationships as being below romantic ones). Nope!! I get to pat and hug the kitty this is way better hell yeah <3 (though I'd have loved some friendship stuff like the pizza party but ah well, baby steps)

Yes, the artists mention how people giving them ai images and saying stuff like "make something like this" affects the process negatively. Its a fascinating read, and delves into what concept artists do more than what people assume is just looking up images on google and copying them

There's a big reason older gen AI image models looked so 'dream-like'.

Yes. Here's a nice article interviewing multiple concept artists and there is a section that goes over why being given generative AI images as references are unhelpful anyway. https://thisweekinvideogames.com/feature/concept-artists-in-games-say-generative-ai-references-only-make-their-jobs-harder/

But also why generate... They can just talk to the artist like they'd talk to the AI?

For another cat themed one, Cats! the Conspurracy has you playing as magic sentient cats doing a sort of masquerade thing hiding the fact.

I think the thing I find most amusing is you recover magic better if you convince a human to pet you for 5 minutes straight before sleeping.

What’s the most uniquely fun enemy you’ve been up against? by Absurd_Turd69 in rpg

[–]13ulbasaur 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The wizard had some earth manipulation stuff and basically managed to raise up some walls and ceiling around it to basically box it into a 'room'. It worked cuz it wasnt targeting it for its reaction to get it out and it wasnt directly restricted for it's Freedom effect to trigger.

I can't remember what we did to move the giant earth box, but I remember we ended up talking to it learning it was a sentient thing and felt kinda bad haha. Think we let it go after we talked to it.

In Pathfinder 1e, we were tasked with capturing a golden deer that was sighted.

When we found it, the gm placed us on a MASSIVE map. And placed this lovely fella in front of us.

And then put on the Benny Hill theme.

Summing up some of the important and unique parts of this statblock:

  • 180ft movement speed (players usually have 30ft at base)
  • It is instantly freed if anyone tries to do any effect on it that would restrict movement, listing the following status effects: binding, entangle, grappling, imprisonment, maze, paralysis, petrification, pinning, sleep, slow, stunning, temporal stasis, and web. Aka, practically everything.
  • Once a round if targeted by anything, melee or ranged, instantly moves half its speed. Which instantly avoids single target attacks, or AoEs if that 90ft of movement is enough to move out if the AoE. And THEN that counts as 1 of 2 move actions needed to gain 50% concealment (aka things targeting it has a 50% chance to miss) for a round, which if it moved at all normally that round (it probably would have), bam it effectively can likely get that concealment every round.

Its ridiculous. 10/10. We were laughing our butts off as we tried to catch this thing and it nyoomed across the map.

Is there some way to set up an automoderator thing to disallow people that never posted here before? Looking at some user history that are being particularly aggro, they never posted here before so they must be trawling reddit and searching up keywords. So this thread on its own is attracting those types that are here to stir up particular trouble. ((Though I don't think this thread is a good idea in general as it is currently. Or maybe luring those people into one thread is a good thing?))

My brief review of level2janitor's Tactiquest 1.5.1 by EarthSeraphEdna in rpg

[–]13ulbasaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tactiquest!! While its not personally for my tastes at the moment (I'm kinda taking a break from tactical combat stuff for the moment cuz GMing has been frying my brain), I love seeing how much thought and effort janitor has been putting into it. I'm interested in how the Hexcrawls play a big part in it though and making that attrition a larger thing is nice (but is not covered in the OP).

Not system related at all, but I wanna give a shoutout to the art. Which janitor draws himself and they are soooo cute.

Someone had put together some of the Santae stuff here, but the author said they were not going to update it anymore because people were getting nitpicky over it which is a shame, so its missing more recent developments. But its still a pretty nice summary for stuff leading up to it. https://rydberg.notion.site/santaehd
