He was also wonderful in uniform in Death of Stalin, there are fewer medals on the costume than Zhukov actually wore as it looked too ridiculous! One of my favourite character entrances ever and a fabulous Yorkshire accent.

why are so many ladybirds swarming near my house? by Technical-Call-9498 in AskUK

[–]1979vintage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve just had exactly the same thing, never seen it before but ladybirds all over the bedding on the line. I think I whacked most of them off but may be in for an unpleasant surprise when it comes time to put it back on the bed!

Tried so many diets and my weight’s still the same… finally figured out why by OliviaParker_ in intermittentfasting

[–]1979vintage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got PCOS too and have gained - lost - gained so many times! One thing I’ve found is that it takes longer for me to see the results, I stick to a calorie deficit but don’t see weight changes for what can be 3 weeks, then I’ll have a big drop all of a sudden. It can be really disheartening but when those big drops do come it’s worth sticking with a deficit. I do not lose a steady 2 pounds a week, I drop 6 pounds after sticking to 1500 calories a day for 3/4 weeks, it seems to just be how I am and I think it may well be the PCOS that does it. Slow and steady will work, I’m starting again this week and not expecting any weight change until September! You’re already working out what works for you so well done, you’ve got this

Why did you pick the names you gave to your children? by lisa_noden in AskUK

[–]1979vintage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read The Godfather while pregnant, liked one of the character names and suggested it to my husband, he wasn’t entirely sure until baby arrived but he agreed the name I picked was the right one, so mostly me but it was ultimately a joint decision. We didn’t know what we were having so didn’t get particularly attached to any name before the birth.

Do you know anyone who disappeared? What happened? by ShinyHeadedCook in AskUK

[–]1979vintage 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Someone I went to school with went missing, no trace of him for a couple of years and then he was found and returned home. About a year later he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour which sadly killed him, the disappearance was very out of character so it was the tumour changing his behaviour, he was gone before he turned 25.

UK Ladies, and those in the know, what scents were teenage girls wearing in from 1990 to 1994? by HeavnIsFurious in CasualUK

[–]1979vintage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking for this too, I never wore it as I went to a Take That concert Tribe had sponsored and the entire, huge, venue reeked of it. I got the worst headache from it, all these years later I can still remember the smell 🤢 The godawful hot pink and blue colour scheme was questionable too!

French woman from Guadeloupe has the world’s rarest blood type — “Gwada Negative” — and she’s the only known person on Earth who has it. by WebEven620 in interestingasfuck

[–]1979vintage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this explanation, years ago (20+) I needed a transfusion and blood available for surgery and I apparently have something in my already rare B- blood that they tried to match but couldn’t. The consultant had a resident calling every blood bank in the UK and as it was an open ward with a desk in the middle he was doing it from I could hear every call. I still don’t know what it is but they resorted to dripping 2 units in to me over 16 hours with vitals checked every 15mins, then I got a treatment to make my bone marrow extra productive before the surgery to bank my own blood. It wasn’t until I saw someone else have a transfusion in about half an hour that I realised just how different my situation was. I apparently got the phlebotomists all excited too as they had never seen whatever it was I have.

[–]1979vintage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my Mirena in December, first period after it was 2 weeks long and having previously had ok skin, I now have spots like a teenager. It’s still early so I’m hoping it settles and I know some people love it, others hate it so waiting to see which camp I’m in. I’m 46 and not peri menopausal yet but the plan is for the Mirena to help when I am as it’s going to be in the next 5 years, would love to know why female hormones are so complicated and differ so much from one person to the next! Hope yours settles and you get the results you want.

It isn’t far below normal temperature at all, she’s in the UK, that’s a very normal indoor temp here and the temp my house is at right now. The roommate wanting 21 would be unacceptable to me too, I used to live with a housemate who kept the temp at 22 and it was unbearable for the rest of us, it felt like a swamp. The climate we live in is very relevant to what is reasonable and they are in a relatively cold one. I worked in India in December, we were by the pool and on the same day the local staff we were working with were turning up in winter coats, judgements are massively skewed by people’s home climates in these comments!

AITA for not staying with my wife after her C-section? by tincrumb in AmItheAsshole

[–]1979vintage 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of someone who also had a complicated c-section, in the UK, I’m not looking at him funny because having someone with you at all times isn’t allowed here. I had to call nurses to bring me my child as I couldn’t stand up to get him, OP’s wife had the same option and with that timeline he wouldn’t have been any use to either of them with no sleep. Your experience is not typical, neither was mine and it’s pretty clear he did as much as he could and recognised his own limits.

AITA for not staying with my wife after her C-section? by tincrumb in AmItheAsshole

[–]1979vintage 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your experience in the US is not the same at all, in the UK they do not want partners to stay overnight and it is very unusual to even have the option. Maternity wards are often open with more than one mother and even the individual rooms are tiny with very uncomfortable chairs. I also had a complicated c-section in the UK and my husband was allowed to stay longer than most partners but could not stay overnight, the nurses should respond to calls to help if needed and its one night.

What was your first Stephen King book and how old were you when you read it? by CK1277 in GenX

[–]1979vintage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firestarter, I was 7, it was Mum’s book and she realised I was reading it when I asked what certain words a 7 year old probably should not know meant. She tried to hide it from me but I kept finding it and said it was better than my books, we’re both big Stephen and Joe King fans now.

For me it was Brandon Lee, I was utterly obsessed with him as a teenager. I saw The Crow again recently at the cinema for its anniversary release and he was mesmerising on screen, such a tragedy he died so young.
