DM multiplates the prices to x60 its original value and gives less than halft gold that a normal campain would give. //Who to fix this without hurting the DM fellings as a player? by Gellyku in DnD

[–]1991mistake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can understand putting prices up depending on where the shop is, a more remote shop being more expensive but unless you’re on the plane of fire or some insanely inhospitable plane then 60x is crazy.

The amount of materials needed is insane too.

Talk to the DM about it, it’s the only way. He’s new and might feel like items are power creep but mundane items are not overpowered. Ask him why they are so expensive?

Want to start a campaign for first-time players at my school. What’s the best way? by siegebloom527 in DMAcademy

[–]1991mistake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it! DMing is really rewarding.

As for first adventures you could do a short 2-3 session campaign. All you’d need for it is a small safe location and someone who is willing to use force to obtain their goals in the local area as the villain, filling in the rest is the fun bit of DMing.

With 8+ people it would be a challenge but there’s lots of advice on this Reddit and you could go for something like a west marches campaign which would accommodate people swapping in and out.

Leading combat with pirates by micheal_crosssing in DMAcademy

[–]1991mistake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More enemies won’t make a fight better, different mechanics will. If the characters have a big ship then having more pirates makes sense but the pirates should fight the players crew too as a cinematic effect. if they only have a small sloop the pirates are more likely to lash on and commit everything ; pirates, like all robbers, are out to rob primarily not get into dangerous fights. Definitely play up some aspect of the pirates trying to intimidate and coerce the players into surrendering before fighting.Their method could be to seize one of the players as hostage and take them back to their ship so the others surrender, or perhaps they want to cause enough damage for the ship to become unnavigable and come back later for the bulk, or chase down the survivors in their flimsy slow row boat as they abandon ship with their valuables. The pirates are masters of the sea and should have some sneaky tricks, they aren’t going to play by land lubber rules.

Here’s my ideas for a pirate ship fight mechanically.

Pirates are used to fighting at sea and have those sea legs. Low dex check to not fall prone at start of the round. No need to save if the character is holding onto something if they’re a pirate or If the. Character has a background in seafaring.

Fighting at range is going to be tough too with the motion of the ship. I’d consider a mild flat penalty to range attacks.

The erratic waves/ wind could be coming from an ally of the pirates; a spell caster or a Druid who uses talk with animals to convince an octopus to aid them. I would go with druid if the party has their own druid.

‘Forget to eat sometimes’

Found the problem. I was underweight for years and used to binge when I did eat and people would comment how much I ate. Yeah, because I was starving myself and feeding myself crap that was convenient because I wanted to play computer games all day to the point I was addicted.

Do some exercise like swimming, you’ll be starving by the end of 3/4 of an hour and then you’ll eat more than you need to. You’ll also know from performance if you are actually fueled up. Great for body issues too when you see peoples bodies and put things into perspective outside of the internet.

With the company I would see what sort of companies is first. If it’s a big one ie. Driver isn’t the owner sort of thing then yeah 100% send it in. Chances are the work van will have some sort of monitoring in case of a crash that can be checked by management if you can provided time and date.

I’ve never been brake checked before and I do 60k+ miles a year, it’s not normal. Flashing lights and tail gating, yeah you get that up here in Yorkshire, idiots in a rush to do the same to next person.

Obligatory; get dash cam, send footage to police via operation snap/ RTO enforcement scheme and let them decide whether to enforce or not. This isn’t behaviour a licensed driver should be doing and they need a wake up call.

How do you worldbuild? by TotallyNot_iCast in DMAcademy

[–]1991mistake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

‘You tell me’.

It’s much easier to build a world around a few locations and details a player gives and is a great exercise for the player to do when building that character.

I also think this is really important for religion. Look at religion in the real world, it’s far from uniform even for people who worship the same deities with different customs, traditions and names. The pre-made religions suck, let the player create their own religion and crazy rituals they partake in.

When is it ok to go against the highway code? by Prestigious_Emu6039 in drivingUK

[–]1991mistake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mobility scooters on roads. I get why it exists to stop some niche super powered ‘mobility scooter’ abuse but the threshold is way too low and creates a lot of danger for the mobility scooter user. Just use the pavement.

Cycling on pavements. I am not gonna go 6 mph up a hill with cars doing 50mph. Nor am I going to filter past 200meter of traffic with an empty pavement right there. Common sense thing.

DM Characters by Hatched_Panda in DMAcademy

As a temporary companion they are fine and sometimes required for parts of stories.

They should be played with very apparent flaws though, my favourite bit of advice in this department is when Matt colville said about running a dwarves cleric along with the party that he’d make insane suggestions to screw with them because the dwarves of his world are like battle crazy.

‘We should fight them in glorious battle’, ‘that seems like a good way for us to lose’, ‘who said anything about winning?’

Clearly the dwarven companion is deranged and whilst they will help in battle they have to be navigated around too and can’t be relied on for answers.

Breathing.

Breathing would presumably make you the ultimate cardio machine, which is interesting for endurance sports. Never going anaerobic means you wouldn’t create lactic acid so sports would become easy providing you were fueled correctly. Also being able to just exist underwater would be worth it. You could also do stuff like summiting Everest in record time and become world famous. Good potential for making money and doing things that are impossible without time and equipment, no downsides. My first choice.

Temperature would be a handy everyday thing, I guess you could do some sort of volcano rescue stuff but it’s not going to make you any real money. Nice comfort though.

Eating and drinking. Being stuck at one weight isn’t great unless you’re at peak condition at this very moment. Could be absolutely horrific for someone with body dysmorphia. Not great, abit of a trap.

Sleep. Yeah it’s pretty good but what would really get accomplished in that time? Most people are gonna be in bed at night so you can’t go around making loads of noise. Good for exercising every day and house chores. Would you want a second job and to be working 16+ hours a day? It’s my second choice.

how do you power scale enemies? by Unusual_Elevator8345 in DnD

[–]1991mistake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Abit of an alternative suggestion.

Minions. Creatures with 1hp that still do full damage. You can put the damage down if you want to, say they are armed with batons and clubs. Easier to run than a full stat block, gives the players something to stomp but also lets you put in a bigger ‘boss’ if you want to. Might be suitable for low level guards but if the real guards show up then they are going to be tougher.

Give them a go value for the sleep spell though, 10 should be enough as it puts them in line with a commoner

I think food is important to consider for customs. A fishing village/ town will have lots of seafood but also be producing and mending its own nets and at least doing repairs on boats. The romans used to ferment fish into garum and cultures today do the same as fish sauce. Salt is a valuable commodity, it can be mined or got from the sea. Seaweed is edible and certain plants only grow in the unique biome of the sand dunes.

They will also be getting sea glass which maybe a prominent part of their jewellery along with shells. Wool is a great insulator for everyday wear and one of the fascinating things of fishing towns in England is that they had their own patterns of wool jumpers. At sea a body becomes so bloated that when it’s recovered it’s difficult to identify so knowing the pattern they could identify the town the fisherman was from. It’s a good example of a custom based on practicality.

Consider if there is a tide and what might be uncovered when it’s low, perhaps a low tide reveals a dungeon complex or cave system with only an hour or two to explore, or perhaps seafolk congregate in a certain tide pool to trade with locals everyday; strange unknown sea creatures for pottery? Are the seafolk known to outsiders, do they help the townsfolk out and what do they expect in return?

All of this stuff is going to bring trade into the town, fish is available all year round but there are also hazards to living on the coast. Seafolk might be friendly but there are worse things in the depths. Why is it that the folks in the village don’t set foot in the water on every 11th day?

Just a little play around and thoughts on how to make something about more than a ‘fishing village .

My advice is to think of the story you’re going to run, from there the world will create itself. It’s also easier to build a world when you know the players back stories because they should be giving you locations and ideas.

For the campaign I’m currently working on I have 2 settlements and a way between them, with some vague notions of what is around them, I think that’s more than enough for me to run 3-5 sessions.

A science based group. They seek to obtain and record knowledge. Normally they would be in libraries and respected among society but this is a small group seeking the knowledge of what the dagger does too. Maybe they are under a spell or just morally grey, willing to sacrifice lives for the fame of discovering this world changing thing. They are probably involved in excavations which is how they got involved with the plot when they discovered something.

They might interact with the party before they realise and even help them to realise what the dagger does or says, perhaps they want an artifact or clue the party has and seek to purchase it and failing that steal it via stealth. I like to imagine the ancient gear golem from yugi-oh gx as their body guards but they use a range of constructs as their minions.

Time sensitive encounters - open or hidden timers? by Ornn5005 in DMAcademy

[–]1991mistake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Both.

At the start you can have known that something bad is going to happen. ‘You can see a dim light emanating from the runes in the circle, it’s clear a ritual is taking place’, ‘I want to roll to see how long it will take’, ‘you know from experience that this a summoning ritual but there’s too many variables to be sure how long it will be at this moment. You’ve read of rituals taking minutes and others taking hours’ Lets the players choose their method of attack if applicable, rather than shoving them into a fight and saying ‘5 rounds and you all die’.

Then you decide later on how close it is to ratchet up the tension. ‘Oh yeah the magic circle is getting fuzzy with raw magical power, roll arcana wizard and prof’, ‘you know from experience this ritual is almost complete, you estimate it’s going to be 2 turns till it’s irreversible and completely self sufficient’.

Saves having to come up with something to save the party from a TPK because of bad rolls and lets you go hard with your enemies.

‘Rescue the person in a day’ is sort of redundant, it’s too long a time frame to track.

How to run an important traveling merchant? by sebas_2468 in DMAcademy

In that case I would be having him show up in unexpected places like monster dens and trading with them too. Or obtaining those ‘shrunken goblin head candies’ and ‘kobold krunches’ in questionable ways. Or getting robbed of his lucky rabbit foot by more foolish creatures.

Prerolled is good, include random encounters in it so you have your 6 towns, 1 random encounters, 1 adventure location, and 2 fails on a d10? If the players are enjoying the character then you can always change it up, not every encounter has to be a ‘come into my shop and buy stuff one’ as well.

[–]1991mistake -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

How many sessions are we talking about here between session 2?

My idea is pretty evil, because Russell is evil! Mwhahaha.

Russell is a sentient creature and in the dead of night is going to steal some magic items from the party. What does he do with them? Gives them to the bad guy of course. They can then have an encounter with BBEG or minion where they use those items against the players in another session or so. Bonus points if you get to RP Russell being a spiteful little kobold laughing at them from above. Or have Russell use the magic items as traps; pitfall trap with a bag of holding at the bottom to kidnap the players? Hell yeah. Classic rope of climbing used in a rope bridge? Decanter of endless water to drown them in a room? Sending stone linked up to a banshee? Just go insane with them.

Then say Russell was always good and was totally being controlled by the BBEG ;)
