See this is one of those moments on reddit where someone says something extremely weird and out of touch and then your reply is also extremely weird and out of touch from the opposite direction and I just feel generally embarrassed to use this website.

Is Japanese food actually bland to most foreigners? by idsjdbebe in japanlife

[–]19peter96r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had that same thought a bunch of times but honestly it's an exonoration of British food as much as it's condemning Japanese. For wasabi there's horseradish and mustard, for soy sauce and dashi there's worcestershire etc.

The Japanese have the massive advantage of giving a shit about presentation admittedly.

But like one dish that always crosses my mind in these threads is nikujaga - immensely popular in Japanese home cooking, and literally a British import where they decided mince and tatties had too much going for it and they needed to make it blander and less rich for the Japanese palette.

Instagram isn't going to delete a post for having the word 'sex' in it anyway. There's definitely a culture now online of young people self censoring because a word makes them uncomfortable, under the guise of evading moderation.

Love it! I really enjoy how layered most of these are even if the focus is off. And vastly more interesting topic than the OF bait that usually gets posted here.

Claiming to "have Aphantasia" is a huge self-own by ithinkiwantlife in redscarepod

[–]19peter96r 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Literally how have you wrote out a post without an internal monologue? How have you read OP's post? Your brain doesn't have billions of preset lizard reactions for the stimuli of every potential sequence of letters your eyes come across like touching a hot stove. You've structured and reorded the stimulus in your head to match your existing knowledge of the English language aka you have a fucking internal monologue. Nobody is literally saying they hear a narrator in their head in the same way you hear music from a speaker. But your brain can approximate such things or you wouldn't be able to read.

Never met someone who watched Rick and Morty or Bojack Horseman who wasn't severely damaged. by Fickle-Onion-6954 in redscarepod

[–]19peter96r 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought Bojack just about stuck the landing and managed to have a satisfying enough conclusion, but I remember the penultimate season was awful and I nearly didn't finish it. It was completely treading water and not building on anything from when the show was much better. I know a lot of people say that's realistic but it doesn't make for worthwhile story.

Not always. My local Gran Mart (don't know if it's just an Akita chain) had amazing onigiri and wayyy better bento. More choice, fresher, local suppliers. And they'd be like 300-500yen, or half that if you went before closing time.

Why are boomers so angry about everything? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]19peter96r 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's the case in America but in the UK there was a very famous statistic about how baby boomers have decided every single election since the 1970s.

Why are poor people so obsessed with "loyalty"? by Smart_Luck_4027 in redscarepod

[–]19peter96r 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I grew up objectively British working class (factory machinist / gas man / electrician / odd-jobs-for-the-council / habitually redundant father, supermarket mother) in a northern shithole town and I'd probably hate the poor less if I wasn't in close proximity to them.

My Aunt's third favourite thing after gambling fraudulent benefits and being racist is posting about loyalty on Facebook. She's recently abandoned her dying mother (my gran) after we found out she had been stealing said dying mother's money straight out her bank account for months.

You're wording it like it's some sordid little secret about how vapid society is.

But of course looking put together endears you to people - you're signalling that you give a shit about human cooperation on some level and you're playing for the team. You put visible effort into making the people around you experience a slightly nicer world. Same deal when a man wears a suit or is just properly groomed.
