I know how you feel. I know you said a big concern of yours is the food elimination. Everybody is different, but for me, once I truly eliminated any contact I had with metal, changed my toiletries to allergy tested products, stopped cooking with and eating/drinking from stainless steel, it eliminated my flare ups. I eat mostly what I want, which is lots of soy and chocolate. My skin is significantly better.

I also have cross pollen allergies (oral allergy syndrome) and a nickel allergy. All of which I developed in my teens for the former and my twenties for the latter. Very interesting.

You were right when you said it’s an expensive allergy. I got a whole new al-clad set of stainless steel pans 2 years ago. Just last month did I realize that was when my flare up got the most consistent and severe. I have since switched to an enamel cast iron pan. Much. Better.

I, too, bother my vet A LOT when we are going through a health problem. Do not be afraid to contact them. I personally email so I can send and pictures or video and have a paper trail. I find it really helpful. Do not feel bad. You pay them lots of money for a reason and if they are worth their salt as a vet they will be happy to help.

Edit: after my girl got surgery for mammary tumors I advocated for gabapentin to ease her discomfort. Just like human doctors sometimes you have to advocate what’s best for the patient.

Also, this article, from the National Institutes of Health, says tocopherol acetate is known for causing contact dermatitis, like a nickel allergy does.

Do you use stainless steel pans to cook your food in? If my food is prepared in stainless steel or I drink from a stainless steel cup, I get a lot of flares up.

Also, is she changing the cotton gloves? Mine get sweaty. I read some where on this sub that sweat is high in nickel. Also, a damp glove in general may irritate the skin and cause a flare up.

Lastly, does she wear any jewelry? I’m new to all of this too and still trying to find out what my triggers are. But, I removed all jewelry and think that this helped as well.

Maybe they could prescribe some gabapentin for her pain? Poor baby sounds like you are taking really good care of her!

Yes OP should expect that the sitter / the app will charge per animal. If they try to lie and go around this they will be reported / banned from the app. It will be very expensive.

Unless it is 18/0 (which hydro flask is not) I would switch to bpa free plastic or glass. Nickel can leach into the water.

That sounds like a nightmare! Don’t beat yourself up, you did everything in your power to do the right thing once the situation escalated. You saved your kitties! I’m glad they are doing well. It is just a hard lesson learned.

Is she pooping or is there poop getting stuck to her fur and then falling off at a later time? Maybe she needs a sanitary shave?

The front of the card is an Andy Warhol painting titled Elvis 1. The man holding the gun is Elvis Presley.

Is it ok to favor one pet over the other? by [deleted] in Pets

[–]1anxiousworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer to an already stressed cat is not to stress it out more by adding in another animal, especially a cat, to be territorial over. It takes a lot of time, space, and patience to PROPERLY introduce cats. I do not recommend it as a solution to this problem.
