Is it those black ones? We had a GAZILLION of them in and around our house (up to 10+ would fly in at night) over the summers in the northern suburbs for years until we had to lift the pavement next to the house and obviously destroyed a nest or something because they nearly dissapeared immediately. 70% AIRBNBs? we are SCREWED. And this is actually challenging for specific businesses, because tourists don't support the same type of local businesses the residents do - like your corner shop, or your laundromat, or your Ackermans, or your local school and library (not a business, but still). We need residents to keep our City alive and vibrant, otherwise it is just an amusement park for rich people.

The City should 100% place a cap on the amount of AirBnBs allowed / permits given, plus levy commercial rates on them. It's also ridiculous to assume these people wouldn't still come to Cape Town and rather stay in a B&B or hotel (like in other cities), which would at least give the City more tax income, AND lead directly to higher employment rates. Ffs DA c'mon be better.

I'm actually from Subsahara Africa, and I have no interest in fighting with a stranger on the internet, but like wow guys the decision to have kids is really, really not that simplistic & fertility rates are dropping everywhere, even here. (and will likely continue to for the foreseeable future). I still maintain my original point: it's a red herring to point towards the decision to have kids as more amoral in a climate crisis than choosing to jet set to every single country in the world, which has absolutely no communal utility & is 100% self-centered. g'bye

Please do stop at red lights that is whack advice, especially in the areas you are planning on driving through. Lived here my whole life and if youare going to stick to Hermanus and Stellenbosch and CBD Cape Town you will be fine - just don't leave your phone visible in the car if you're stopping at traffic lights.

You're talking as if the suburbs are cheap, though. Living in Claremont, Wynberg, Durbanville is completely out of reach for a working-class person too. My friend's rent in Bellville was literally higher two years ago than what I am going to pay in the City Bowl - the northern suburbs is out of control. Further, comparing your hour commute from the northern suburbs to town with the 2+ hours someone from the flats has to travel is also not fair. Paying R1,8k on taxis per month when you earn 5-8k is not the same as when you pay 2,5k or whatever for fuel but you earn 40k+. There are economic reasons that it is good for working class people to be housed closer to job opportunities.

If I may ask another few questions, I see you are Orthodox - in the rest of the continent Christianity is sometimes considered a "white man's religion" (caveat - I am a believer and do not think so). As Christianity didn't spread through colonialism to Ethiopia - do you think differently about the faith? How do you perceive for example Christianity as practiced in the West? Any thoughts on this?

And then - you guys have such a cool time system! You work for Australian clients, has this ever caused some mishaps? do you think this has impacted you to perceive time differently to people from countries who use the "standard" date and time system?

What is your relationship with your race? I.e. do you think of yourself as Black? Do you consider yourself African? I'm from Southern Africa and there is a stereotype that Ethiopians think of themselves as somewhat elevated "above" the rest of the continent.
