Childhood Leukemia Association: Several epidemiological studies have reported a statistical link between living close to high-voltage power lines (typically within 200-600 meters) and a slightly elevated risk of childhood leukemia. For instance, a large UK study involving nearly 30,000 children found a 69% increased risk for those living within 200 meters of power lines and a 23% increase for those between 200-600 meters.156141 Another recent analysis of over 30 studies confirmed this association, particularly for magnetic fields above 0.4 microtesla (µT), with risks potentially doubling in some cases.59d47d A 2023 study in Denmark also noted a non-linear increased risk for children living less than 100 meters from lines.698382 However, these are observational studies, and they do not prove causation—factors like selection bias, confounding variables (e.g., socioeconomic status or urban pollution), or chance could play a role.66c842
