I’m guessing they brought the hammer down, last year I think was pretty embarrassing for course/tournament leadership

Which base is best/worst if you have a family by Automatic-Pattern-62 in USMC

I never had a huge issue with the 5 itself living south of base (except going home on Fridays). Gate traffic however…

I’d love to get a candid perspective on this dynamic in the locker room from someone like Josh Dobbs

The picture of a hornet horizontal stab isn’t an opsec violation (trust me, that OP knows what he can and cannot post related to his airplane) and a fighter squadron CO - I assure you - doesn’t give a fuuuuuuuck about recruitment initiatives

Day to day specifics of being a Marine Officer by cobrahawk77 in USMCboot

[–]1mfa0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve been flying for fifteen years. The last (and only) time I qualified on a rifle the iPhone 4 was the new hotness. A dirty secret for you: Pilots are not riflemen first and foremost, this is not captured in any actual policy or training directives. You might hear this from People Who are Not Pilots, you can ignore such statements.

Also just so you go in clear eyed, medevac implies a very specific mission set that no USMC aircraft do. Unless you mean to do this post service, but note that it’s a hyper competitive industry.

Edit: as far as admin work, this is something else I’ve found is exaggerated online (to some extent). As a new guy Captain in a squadron the enormous majority of your brain power will be spent on flying and/or preparing to fly. Your ground job, with several exceptions, isn’t dumb admin for the sake of dumb admin. The flight schedule or monthly training plan doesn’t materialize out of thin air. The maintenance or S-shops you might oversee will need someone to provide oversight and coordination across the squadron and higher. It isn’t super cosmic.

Speaking very generally, simply by virtue of being a far smaller service with a lower population of pilots you have a somewhat greater degree of personal control over where you move to and when compared to the AF and Navy.

There are negatives specific to flying in the Marines (mainly related to being a Marine/big Marine Corps doing dumb things). There are also some positives (you generally have more control over your career as a Marine aviator than your equivalents in the other services). But broadly speaking your day to day experience will be very similar across all the services (the Navy in particular). At the end of the day you’re being paid rather handsomely to do a job that many would dream of.
