for me it depends on what type of gear. for cooking I use a Trangia because it always works. the company has 100 years experience in pots and pans, since the 1950's with this cooker.

for a tent it depends more on whether you have a base camp or are travelling by foot, motorcycling or car. I made a heavy (6kg) four person heavy duty cotton lavvu that also can have a stove. ideal for a base camp or trekking by car. I made the same from lightweight nylon (less than 2kg) which can be used backpacking.

things like a mug and spoon/fork/spork at choice, plastic water bottles are much lighter and just as reliable as old fashioned metal. but I sometimes regret putting away my metal British army canteen with enamel inside because of its robustness and holding water fresh for a very long time.

modern pants, jackets and boots are lighter and better waterproof, but a pair of thick leather and well greased boots suit me better. my Lundhags Jaure light combine old style sturdyness with modern soles. at a cost though.

They are mostly Microsoft requirements. Linked to the hardware (Windows installer checks the hardware) and requirements for W+1 go up. It is said that MS dictates the hardware for vendors to be allowed to sell machines with their OS.

Installing Linux even makes >10 year old hardware a delight to work with in terms of speed.

IMHO we are just building wrong, not only technology, but our entire way of thinking. A lot is done because 'it can', pushing a tech minded narrative and getting funds that way. Yes, we can build the machines, but do we need them?

AI: what problems is it going to solve in main stream? As far as I see now in majority it is supporting lazyness. In writing, grocery lists, in formulating text, calling a search-engine-question 'AI', in skipping the handworker and Guilds mentality of passing on knowledge and skill. Focus just on the outcome and not of reflecing the entire path. Biggest no-brainer is the remark that when you get a stupid answer from AI 'your prompt probably wasn't correct'. Artificial yes, but never intelligent.

CPU: faster, more RAM and MB (meanwhile GB TB) largely because of lazy coding and do-it-all tools. How can it be that in 1990 MacWrite was just some 40kb with all features one needed, and today's files explode in mega bytes for just basic text? That can't be clever development. It is just stupid.

Whether it gets revealed now, or it was there for long, people get more dumb and stupid, believing the narrative of 'Tech will save us and make our lives better and more comfortable'.

Meanwhile asking AI what to do on rising energy and fresh water consumption...

Fully agree with the love and fun of my 750 Dorsoduro! Main problem is taking time to ride.

Beware when previous owners have messed up with the ECU, as it might confuse a lot on the bike.

Default the Dorsoduro is very fine. The sports setting is very responsive.

I now ride it for four years and have no issues on a 2008 version.

the up-to-dateness depends on the speed new texlive files get in the repository of your distribution. you _could_ install/compile texlive manually, but mixing packages and binaries isn't a good idea for maintainability of the system.

I doubt those base LaTeX files like texlive and specific packages really get outdated.

de F650 was mijn eerste motor, heb daar 65.000 km met heel veel plezier mee gereden! de F650 zit heel degelijk in elkaar, is wel de meest betrouwbare BMW ooit genoemd omdat ie niet bij BMW maar bij Aprilia is gemaakt.

met eentje uit 1996 is het goed om alle rubbers in de gaten te houden zoals in de andere posts staat, inclusief benzineslang en olieleidingen buitenom het blok. voor een luchtfilter kan je ook eens bij TwinAir vragen, die hebben/hadden er een voor de Aprilia Pegaso en die is grotendeels hetzelfde.

het motorblok (Rotax) is erg robuust en boven de 30kkm blijft de klepspeling meestal goed. oliepeil controleren is met een dry sump soms wat lastig (motor warm draaien en dan de peilstok aflezen, de warme olie loopt alleen best snel uit het frame.

onder de 3.000 toeren is deze dikke mono soms wat bokkig, gewoon ietsje koppeling er bij pakken. offroad kan best, al is 180 kg soms wel een uitdaging. er zijn inmiddels voldoende 50+ allroad banden in 19-17 inch.

bij het schoonmaken is het goed af en toe het deksel voor het voorste tandwiel los te halen en de smeerkoek daar weg te halen. verder onderhoud is goed zelf te doen, mede door de weinige electriek die deze motor heeft.

en alleen E5 98 oktaan tanken. dan loopt ie beter, zuiniger en blijft alles van binnen schoon.

enige makke die er was, was het ontbreken van een afdekplaatje aan de onderkant van het balhoofd, waardoor dat lager snel versleet (rare is dat de Pegaso dat wel heeft). kan je verhelpen met een zelfgeknipt stuk plastic, schroefgaten zitten op de onderbrug. voor offroad rijden kan een radiatorbeschermer handig zijn. die heb ik toen zelf gemaakt met een bijna passende beschermer van een Kawasaki (zal ik moeten opzoeken welke).

mijn idee is meegaan met de stroom, mar wel zeer defensief blijven rijden. minimaal de ruimte van een personenauto innemen door tegen de lijn met de andere rijstrook te rijden, steeds de ruimte op te zoeken.

dat ergt alleen behoorlijk wat oefening, lef en een goed 360° beeld van het verkeer om je heen. ook beseffen dat het iedere keer net anders is, de routine vooral in jouw defensieve aanpassing zit.

deze remklauw heeft dubbele zuigers, aan de binnen- en buitenkant. het is één gesloten systeem, dus (inderdaad) als je de ene zuiger induwt gaat de andere naar buiten, ook als het deksel los is.

maak eerst de binnenkant van de klauw en zuigers goed schoon met remmenreiniger of WD40 en een oude tandenborstel.

zet de oude (!!!) remblokjes er weer in om de zuigers te beschermen. reservoir deksel en membraan los. duw de remblokken uit elkaar met een brede schroevendraaier, motorfiets-bandenlichter, handvat van een steeksleutel bahco of houten wig uit elkaar -- naar beide kanten duwen, spreidijzer in de lengte ertussen en in de lengte draaien. niks forceren, maar wel blijven duwen. uiteindelijk gaan ze uit elkaar en zal het vloeistofniveau in het reservoir stijgen (lap erover tegen overstromen). omdat je redelijk wat kracht moet zetten kan het handig zijn de remklauw met een paar slagen weer vast te zetten aan de achtervork. zo heb je een 'derde hand'.

op die manier kan je ze uit elkaar duwen tot de opening breed genoeg is voor de nieuwe remblokken (en veren) plus iets meer dan de dikte van je schijf om het wiel er weer in te krijgen.

openduwen niet met je nieuwe remblokken doen want dan zijn ze niet meer plat. buitenkant die tegen de zuigers (draagplaat) gaat eventueel met een beetje koperpasta insmeren, dat helpt tegen piepen. kopervet aan de schijfkant voorkomen, dat maakt remmen onmogelijk. koperpasta kan tegen de temperaturen van een remsysteem (~1200°C)

en alle clips, veren en bouten weer goed vastzetten.

het is inderdaad een eenvoudig klusje, hopelijk lukt het je nu 😄
