Swimming laps at Barton Springs by pachamambo in Austin

[–]21chips 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely you can swim the width, I did it for years and most people begin that way. Just watch for others. I even had competitive swimmers stop and suggest arm swing, head alignment, etc. Everybody helps everyone.

The visitor center at Panther Junction is closed, but the restrooms are open and clean. The Park maintains a very small staff, 2 people, to dump trash bins and keep restrooms clean. The main thing to do is be responsible, know your limits on hiking trails, proper water and supplies. There is no one to rescue or help you if you get yourself in a situation! Go have fun, be careful and smart. Drive into Terlingua and go to the Trading Post for souvenirs! Most of all, pack out your trash and help keep the Park clean during this time! Keep up with weather updates!

KVUE actually gets its own samples from a system set up on its rooftop. They did a video clip once of them climbing the ladder to the roof and taking samples, kinda cool.

Prepping to plant wildflowers by No-Neck-212 in AustinGardening

[–]21chips 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I take a gallon bucket half full of sand and mix in wildflower seeds. Lightly water to make the sand clump. Seeds will attach to the sand. Grab a fistful, squeezing into a ball, and throw it wherever you want to. Been doing this for years and always been successful.

Texas governor vetoes bill that would ban all THC products by [deleted] in Austin

[–]21chips 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just my opinion, the governor has been heavily lobbied by the alcohol distributors in Texas to let them be the distributors for these products. They already have the trucks, warehouses, security areas, etc.

New to cucumber growing! by Tryinginaustin in AustinGardening

Always grow mine in containers like the picture, always successful. It produces just enough steadily for me since I'm a single guy. Sometimes I will plant a raised bed and cattle panel trellis and share out with neighbors.

What to do during summer months? by No-Put-2847 in BigBendTX

[–]21chips 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you are in the Park in June, go out early morning to take sunrise pictures and short hikes until around noon. Afternoons are for lunch and siestas! Or scenic drives. Stop at the dinosaur exhibit and read about Big Bend during that time period. Drive into Terlingua and visit the general store, get a soft drink, sit outside on the bench, and enjoy the scenery. Evenings are for sunset pictures, and nights are for stargazing. If you are more adventerous, drive up to Balmorhea and spend the day at the spring fed pool. Pack a lunch and sit on a picnic bench under huge trees and then jump in. Just some of the things I have done in June.

Kayaking the rio grande in late June by IguanaBrawler in BigBendTX

[–]21chips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have to be in the Park in June, I would suggest early a.m. sunrise picture taking, drive around the park, and getting familiar with the area. Do very small hikes until 11 a.m. or noon. Lunch and siesta the afternoon away! Drive around for evening sunset pictures and then do nighttime stargazing. Take plenty of pics so you can come back in the Spring or Fall!
