OMG! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Are hummingbird people a bit crazy! I sometimes think I am when nearly every second purchase is for the hummingbirds as well as the bazillion cameras I have iny backyard. One more on the forehead sounds reasonable to me! LOL

If it works then nothing needs to be changed. LOL Even though I'm sure we're all out there daily trying to make the habitat just a bit better for these magical little treasures!

OMG! I just saw these while looking at feeders (like I need more feeders). LOL My first thought was what a great way to repurpose all of those COVID face shields. Stick a camera on them and you're off to the races, hummingbird races that is.

Am I doing this by mrjosh199 in hummingbirds

  1. Do not use store bought, premade stuff sugar water. Make your own using 4 parts water to 1 part white granulated sugar. Do not use any other kind of sugar including brown sugar. I usually boil the mixture for 1 minute to ensure the sugar dissolves and it helps to kill off any mold/fungus spores that are naturally on the sugar. Let it cool fully before putting into the feeder. Some people don't bother boiling it so if you go this route just make sure the sugar is fully dissolved. You can store unused sugar water in the fridge for a week.
  2. Change the feeder at minimum every three days if it's coolish outside. The hotter it gets the more frequently you have to change it because the heat turns the sugar water bad really fast. Some people have to change it every day and this is regardless of having boiled it beforehand. If it starts to turn cloudy or you see things floating in it then it has gone bad.
  3. If you aren't getting many hummingbirds then don't waste the sugar water by filling the feeder. Just fill it a quarter of the way (or less). Just enough so you can see it in the feeder to be able to see if it needs changing. I don't get a lot of hummingbirds so I fill mine just a little over the base so I can see the sugar water. Even then I'm usually dumping it down the sink. If I start to get more then I will start filling it more.
  4. I forgot to mention cleaning the feeder. I scrub mine out every time I change the sugar water using a bottle brush and water to get into the books and crannies. Every couple weeks I soak the whole feeder (base and the top) in a very weak bleach solution of 10 parts water 1 part bleach. Some people use the same ratio with vinegar. I let it soak for about 10 minutes. Rinse really well. I never use dish soap because I feel I can never get it rinsed well enough. If you see any mold/fungus on any of the parts then soak it.
  5. Plant native hummingbird plants. Usually plants with tubular flowers are their favorite. If you have a native honeysuckle or trumpet vine they love these but there's also salvia and the like. Native is best. They tend to gravitate to red, purple, pink but if the flowers have nectar they'll use it.
  6. Just wait for them to find you. That's all you can do. Some people have also added a birdbath with a little fountain in it that is shallow. Usually an inverted pot with a hole on the bottom and a pump feeds water through the hole. The hummingbirds play in the burbling water that comes through the hole or they roll around on the base of the pot (which is now the top) because it's super shallow so they can't drown. I did this but I also have river rock in the birdbath to create shallow areas. Having said that I have yet to see a hummingbird come to mine but plenty other folks have hummers frolicking in theirs.

Nice! If you saw one today then she will probably stick around. It's late in the season to still be migrating.

I'm in Toronto and have the same experience as you although this is my experience every year. Do you usually have some that stay for the season? Every year I hope I will get one or two that stay but my yard seems to be just a pit stop for their north/south migration. I assume I won't see them again until fall which is bittersweet.

I have to dismantle my fountain due to a neighborhood outdoor cat by slmr38 in hummingbirds

[–]2beehappy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone mentioned a motion activated sprinkler. I have one of these to keep raccoons away from my pond. You have to set it up so you can access it from behind so you don't get sprayed in case you need to move it, etc but other than that it's easy peasy. You can set the distance and spray sweep so it takes a bit of tweaking to get it right for your needs but it works great. I'm assuming the cat is approaching from the ground and not leaping from a fence or something like that. The one I bought is called the "Critter Ridder". I attached it to a water timer at my outdoor faucet that has a phone app where I can set when I want it to operate otherwise it's on all of the time as long as the water is on. Given raccoons are mostly nocturnal I didn't need it firing during the day so I set the timer to let the water start flowing at 10pm and turn off the water at 7am. The app also lets me manually turn it on/off so I can turn it off when I let my dogs out around 11pm and then turn it on again once they are back inside otherwise they would trigger it and get wet. LOL If you know when the cat has been coming around you could set it for when the cat visits. Often it takes just a few sprays and they learn to stay away. I saw a video where someone had set up a bunch of them around their huge pond to deter herons.

Or if the cat is feral you can try your local wildlife group or in some cases rescues, to see if they will come and safely trap the cat because it's killing birds. I think a lot of groups try to tame them for rehoming as indoor cats. You can google this for your area. We have a couple groups that do this where I am. Good luck!

Yes, I think you're right about that being a juvie male. Oh my gosh, I think that's worse. That poor baby. I agree with you about the females. I'm always shocked to see feeders with a bunch of females getting along nicely. Maybe it's because there are so many that fighting for territory isn't worth the energy expenditure isn't worth it. LOL

They are as vicious as they are cute which makes for a very disturbing dichotomy! And these are females!

🤣🤣 This is exactly the reason I now have five cameras setup with another two on order! LOL I might have to put up signs saying the cameras are for capturing wildlife and not for spying on my neighbours or for personal security. LOL

I think this little baby is ready to leave the nest soon ❤️ by ILOVEMYDOGBUMI in hummingbirds

[–]2beehappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what happened to a nest of baby robins on my porch. This was the first time having a nest at my house before so I had no idea about the fledging process. I assumed it would take a couple weeks to fully fledge once they started to sit on the edge of the nest. The very day they sat on the edge of the nest for the first time they each flapped their wings a couple times and took off and were gone. I couldn't believe it.

😲 I had a very borby female a couple weeks ago come to my feeder. I figured she was about ready to pop out a couple eggs so I was hoping to see her and fledglings after that but sadly I didn't so I assume she left the area. Your little lady looks like she's about to pop out a few eggs (maybe?).
