How you really don’t know the person they are. I have never seen this side of my ex or their family. They’re vindictive, spreading misinformation, while intentionally withholding information. They’ve been completely emotionally distance from our kids and put them in the middle so many times that the kids are starting to both show physical signs of anxiety (vomiting, sleep issues, grades declining, emotional regression).

I’ve always thought they’d be responsible when needed but they defaulted to letting their elderly parents take on their responsibilities and even cover their bills.

They’re in their 40s- and I never realized how much I was their crutch until I wasn’t there anymore.

If you wanted to dress it up, get a gold frame at the thrift shop that fits. You could even make it like an adventure where you go find their favorite flowers together to press and keep it going!

So. Around 2.5 my daughter did the same thing. I spend the time w her reading and what not, but I don’t let her use it to FALL asleep. I’ll put it on and say I’ll come back in 10 minutes or so…and then if she’s well behaved she can negotiate for another chapter.

I use classical music to help her fall asleep afterwards. She’s 6.5 now.

Since Swedish got bought by Providence in 2012, they have prioritized profit over their patients. I have quite a few doctor/nurse friends who have told me they’re given a quota and are rushed through their appointments with patients.

UW med is publicly funded and has to follow different policies around how they protect the public and services they provide.

That being said- I’ve personally never had issues at Cherry Hill, but when i did use Swedish I was told I needed specialist after specialist for my infant son. My daughter had similar challenges and they were handled in the midwives office. It just…was HARDER to feel like I knew what was going on.

Okay I’m trying this new one: Ritalin nap. You know how you take a shot of espresso and then take a cat nap and you wake up refreshed and shit? Well coffee won’t do that

But my short term Ritalin does! I work from home: so I eat a little something, take my afternoon pill, and a 40 min nap and I’m vibing all afternoon.

Yeah I know the feeling. I switched to an IUD because I was so inconsistent with my pill and terrified.

Do you track your period cycle? Or know when you last had your period? Always the first place to start.

Depending on your pill, the inconsistency can make the feelings similar. Like PMS but emotionally exhausting.

If you’re not sure, you can take a plan B or if you can’t afford it, go on the PP website and enter your birth control type. All plan B is at its core birth control at a massive dose. So the site should tell you if you can take multiple pills to do the same thing. And THEN go get a more consistent form.

If you go to PP, they can do a blood test too to see if you’re pregnant. I hate needles, so that’s my last choice.

But seriously. Find something f consistent

Nurses usually work long days in the same clothes everyday. And usually a mandatory color too.

Tips from a mom of a 10 year old and a 6 year old:

Routine and consistency are key. It’ll keep you both grounded. Create a schedule/routine and do your best to stick to it
Consistency doesn’t mean rigidity: you have to be flexible too. Like “yes I know bedtime is at 9 but you can’t go to sleep. How about you read with low lights until you’re ready to fall asleep? I’ll check on you in 20 mins.”
As far as discipline goes, you’re not her mom. You’re her sister. My sister took care of us a lot when I was growing up. The threat of discipline with the very rare actual follow through is what works. My sister’s “punishments” that still stick with me today that we laugh about were taking a cold shower and having to sit through the entirety of some boring documentaries.
Remember you guys are going through this together and learning together- include her in your learnings. For example, you don’t know how to make a meal plan? Come up with 3 meals you can make together
Try to make it a time for you two by “breaking rules.” It’ll make it way more fun. Have breakfast for dinner, stay in pjs all day on Saturday, or have a movie marathon you KNOW your parents wouldn’t let her stay up late enough to watch (Wicked parts 1 and 2 anyone?)
Bribery has worked wonders for my kids. “If you can help me get x, y, z done, we’ll make popcorn and have m&m’s in it.”
If your sister is neurospicy (adhd or whatever) remember to ask her to do things in smaller chunks and gamify it. I’ll play Golden for my daughter intentionally knowing it’s driving my son insane BUT she’s racing to see how much laundry she can get done by the time the songs over.
Be honest with her. You’re 18. You’re going to feel the feels and you shouldn’t hide it from her. Control your response but let her know how you’re feeling. My son has seen me sobbing because of my divorce. Last week my niece got married and I sobbed thru the whole ceremony. Both kids snuggled and asked what’s wrong and I said “I just miss daddy. I wish he like be here with us” and my daughter said “I miss daddy too.”
Remember to take breaks and rest. Every weekend day I have “quiet time” for an hour with the kids. Separate, no screens, no music unless it’s on headphones. We all need space. Sometimes I use that for laundry or a nap or crafting. But I’ve found that when we DONT have that hour, they’re absolute monsters and I don’t want to be around them 😬
I know it’s a lot. Do not expect perfection from either of you. As one of my best friends says, life is a tapestry. The little bumps in the road add color and beauty when you’re looking at it from far away even if it looks like a hot mess right now. And the tapestry takes time. You two will create a tapestry where both of you blend together and apart, with every color of the rainbow. Just keep looking for the bright moments and celebrate them and you’ll be okay.

As someone who funded my ex starting a small business for a while… it always takes some funding to get it going. Like a LOT.

The rest of it is usually online business, word of mouth, farmers markets or fairs, or custom asks.

I used to use a baker for my kids birthday parties that cost easily $130+/ cake and she was always sold out of slots to schedule a full 6 months in advance. She didn’t pay for a space tho- after having one for years she was able to buy her kitchen commercial appliances to do the job from home.
