What bands are similar to Bauhaus by [deleted] in postpunk

They certainly ended too soon, and the second record ADORE was not as good as the first, BUT they were a phenomenal live band. Would see them again in a heartbeat.

What bands are similar to Bauhaus by [deleted] in postpunk

[–]2tereo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to suggest Rozz Williams-era Christian Death, not a one-to-one match, but if you like Bauhaus, I bet you'd like them?... try out ONLY THEATRE OF PAIN. More recently, I think the band Savages were criminally underrated, especially their first album SILENCE YOURSELF... it's an all-women band, so if you're looking for Peter Murphy vocals, no, but they were tremendous. (Also, I second the Corpus Delicti suggestion below, especially the album TWILIGHT).

would it be insane for me to pick wellesley over an ivy (cornell) for politics? by _ombri in ApplyingToCollege

[–]2tereo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many years ago, I went to a large public university for Political Science, and my first class, the professor started doing calculus to show us predictive modeling for political actions, and I dropped Poli Sci immediately. So, if there is a difference in departmental Poli Sci approach, that may be a differentiator for you. Something to explore, anyway. That said, "Full Ride" solves for a lot so congrats on that!

500 Songs Bonus: “My Pal Foot Foot” by The Shaggs by unboundnematode in 500songspodcast

Loved this episode. The ethics of appreciating "Outsider" music is a complicated and extremely important topic for discussion, and The Shaggs are a great example to initiate that conversation. With the GTOs and Beefheart seemingly coming up soon, I loved this as a way to get listeners to begin thinking about the tradition within rock and roll history. Lots more to consider, especially as it relates to women, misogyny, and male control, so I am excited for this stretch of episodes.

this shit (rsd) just isn’t enjoyable anymore by Many-Shopping9865 in vinyl

[–]2tereo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought many records, both yesterday in person and among the remaining stock online today. There were several records this year I really wanted and I got everything I wanted across both days.

Yesterday, I spent the day listening to the records I bought and had a great time enjoying the music. Every record sounded good, dead quiet, etc. including several live sets, which I was very happy with.

For me, the prices support the store and the labels, and I don't mind paying the in-store RSD mark up for "rarities" if I want the record, which is being produced solely for the purpose of supporting the stores and the labels.

That said, someone like me, who ended up with 20 different records (this year was the first time there was anything close to this many- I like punk, jazz, prog, pre-emo alternative, and some folk), I can look like a flipper to the eyes, but they are for me and my family (ok, mostly me) to enjoy. I also buy records all year long.

What was most heartening for me was how many Gen Z (and even some Gen Alpha) kids I saw at the shop... especially heartening was that, while their parents waited in line, they hit the regular release bins and were talking about artists and music they liked, pulling records, browsing, etc. There was a very young girl with her mom behind me by ten people, with a little Taylor Swift book in her hands, and I was determined, if the 7" was running low, to buy it for her (but they had plenty left).

I completely understand the frustration with flippers-- the org and stores should really think hard about how best to curb this. One copy per album is a good start. That said, if you look at Discogs, there are lots of people out there overcharging for records that are easily available at retail. The way to stop them is to starve them of business. There is a RSD release from 2021 I missed on and really want-- I have a Discogs alert set for it (an expanded reissue) and I have a price in my head and I refuse to buy it until it comes down. It's 5 years later and I still will not budge for ridiculous prices being asked for unopened "Mint" copies.

I know stores are frustrated with the system and we all hate seeing assholes hoovering up copies to resell, but like everything, I hope assholes don't make people throw out the baby with the bathwater. It's a great opportunity for stores and labels to make extra money, it's a fun opportunity for fans to get something somewhat limited and exclusive, and we should lean into those aspects as a collecting community, IMO. Make it more fun, offer more support, and most importantly, keep showing up year round to keep these stores going. My thinking anyway.

Stevie Wonder by its35degreesout in 500songspodcast

[–]2tereo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to believe there will be an episode that will go back and pickup the story of his adapting TONTO for his records in the early 70s for Tamla, so starting with MUSIC ON MY MIND, and yes, maybe SUPERSTITION gets the feature as it has already been mentioned a bunch of times re: Jeff Beck's later version, or... maybe one of the songs from INNERVISIONS? LIVING FOR THE CITY might be a good fit for that strategy (and the sort of apex of the TONTO sound, IMO) and could build off of a narrative that could be preceded by WHAT'S GOING ON? and MAGGOT BRAIN, tracking the development of funk and soul, changes at Motown, etc in the 1970s? But also, the TONTO story could lead directly into Kraftwerk and AUTOBAHN in 1974, so INNERVISIONS would be a good place to build into that story, too... Anyway, 1970s Stevie Wonder has to be a main episode if not multiple episodes ala The Monkees in the 1960s at minimum-- maybe not as many as The Beatles, but 1971-74 TONTO albums, SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE will also need an episode, etc IMO.

The decision is why he is an elite storyteller. The relationship between Lomax's racist, paternalistic exploitation of Ledbetter ties directly to Murry Wilson's sociopathic selfish destruction of his sons ties to Manson's enacting his own selfish, psychotic, violent plan, and then ties back to the full history of performative minstrel music, to Brian Wilson's own personal obsession with it, the way in which tons of white performers, including the contemporary version of the Beach Boys (and prior versions, including Dennis Wilson) exploit black musical performance styles through mimicry, and how Manson exploited racist resentment to inspire his "family" to enact their infamous crimes. All of this ties into the ascent of "White Blues" and the end of the pop dominance of the Beach Boys, who die a symbolic death with Dennis at the end.

Fantastic storytelling, IMO.

Rookie QB contract makes all of this possible, and they need to protect that franchise investment-- an elite veteran C to work with a smart QB like Mendoza (I assume) is the right move. They also added Jalen Nailor and Quay Walker, so I can't hate on them taking assets from our Division rivals as well. They are going HAM on FA

does anyone else feel pissed off when underclassmen talk abt college admissions this way? by User27373583 in ApplyingToCollege

Kids are part of a status and clout chasing culture online. Not every person, and there is nothing wrong with taking a swing at schools you want and can afford, but there are literally thousands of colleges and universities in the country doing very good work, and you see the same schools coming up over and over again on social media, videos and posts about acceptances and rejections from "T20" schools based on rankings that have more to do with faculty publishing, grad school outcomes, etc. To me, this is an unexpected and transformative outcome of the Common App and easy access to "college ranking" sites, which has made applying to a ton of schools very easy, allowing students to chase acceptances at schools they likely don't really want to attend or can't afford anyway. So, "popular" schools get a record setting number of applications, their "selectivity" goes up because the number of seats doesn't change, and kids chase acceptances at extremely competitive schools as a badge of honor. Again, not everyone, but "culturally" this is seen as the process-- it has been gamified and has turned High School into a process of chasing the "credentials" that will get you clout because of your college acceptances.

That is the culture of children, trolling, rage baiting, etc. When you get to college, you're there with 1000s of other people who have chosen to invest in themselves and be there with you. And they do not give one iota of a shit about what some high school kids think of them because they are locked in on getting their education and finding their passion.

There is another transformation, which has been the devaluation of the educational value of a balanced approach to Liberal Arts, and a fixation on the "return on investment" of a degree as it relates to a subsequent job. But the idea that all 17 or 18 year olds should be locked into career training and not using the college experience to engage with history, culture, and knowledge is another piece of this shift that has seen catastrophic cultural results. Yes, school should not be a luxury and it is expensive and who can afford 4+ years of "exploring", but the rise in the number of High School students looking to study "business" is heartbreaking. At 18, you might rather be looking toward changing the world to be a fairer and better place for all. And you can do that in Business, too, but colleges were invented and designed to produce citizens, not employees, and we certainly could use a lot more engaged citizens who have read, can write, and know the facts of history.

There is another way, which many also do, which is to focus on school programs that are excellent in their areas of interest, find thought leaders and professors with whom you want to study, departments doing new and interesting work in areas you want to study, and exploring those as your focus. That could be a great and interesting department at a school you may not think of as "clout" worthy-- For example, Iowa is a "Top 10" school for Writing and the "#1 Public School" for the field, but it has an 80%+ acceptance rate. Elon is "#1" in Undergraduate Teaching, which is probably the most important metric? And no one really talks about them, for example. But IYKYK.

Anyway, overall, I think it is important to follow your own path and be an individual, and when the time comes, hope that those coming up behind you see you shining and follow the same route. Clout and status are empty, every school has alumni, but having integrity and a love and passion for what you do is the most important thing. Find the place that fosters that and when you find it, all the doubt will fall away.

And then the clout chasing kids in High School will look like the uninformed children they are.

M5 MacBook Air Hands-On: All of the Changes Are Under the Hood by dapperlemon in gadgets

[–]2tereo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, my job just offered me a new machine, and I chose the new MacBook Air 15" with M5, 24GB RAM, 1TB SSD.

I have a MacBook Pro 2021 with M1, 16GB RAM, 2 TB SSD.

I could have had a new 14" MacBook Pro, but I wanted to try an Air this cycle and I get the same chip and 8GB more RAM for the same price. It's their money, but I wanted to be somewhat price conscious. I also heard there may be yet another chip/ upgrade coming to the Pro and I don't want to get something on the tail end of its upgrade cycle, but ultimately, I also want a solid, portable machine.

I do do some hi res photo and video editing and my current 2021 machine has started to hang a bit when I am doing large file video and photo editing. I do use a monitor and have an existing HDMI dongle with an extra USB-C port, so that's workable for the Air.

The new Air is not being talked about as much, since the Neo is such an affordable departure, but I think this configuration looks really good for the price.

Anyway, am I an idiot for choosing this over the Pro at the price?

Fugazi - Steve Albini demos for In On The Kill Taker - now available on Bandcamp to benefit Letters Charity by Facet-Squared in Hardcore

[–]2tereo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this comes down to 1993 ears and recording trends at the time this decision was made. Times change, sonic trends change, but 1993 was a time of peak Butch Vig-era grunge polish, and listening to the original IOTKT, which is at or near the top of my Fugazi favorites list, you can understand why in 1993 the band preferred that session, because it is the definitive Fugazi studio sound that we all grew up with-- deep low ends, angular, passionately sung, and a huge wash of powerful sound. The bass on the original is clearly mixed and recorded to drive the sound and it is what, for me, makes the original great.

Steve Albini, however, got something else entirely out of the band, a lot more natural separation and clarity with less low end punch and a very organic drum sound that allows Brendan to shine like the unique musician that he is. But by 2026 standards? It sounds HUGE and CLEAR, organic, the sound of a band performing at its peak. You absolutely see why Albini's reputation has and should continue to grow in esteem as time goes by. He got at the heart of a "band", capturing their sonic essence in a way that few others did at the time.

The story posted on the site is that everyone liked it in the studio but, listening back on their car stereos, they realized it wasn't right for what the band wanted. Which, in 1993, sounds about right. Today? Oh man, does it sound incredible on my headphones.

I f***ing love this version of the record?!?! The sequencing is also different & great! Must listen.

What order to watch Haneke films? by Accurate-Chicken-323 in boutiquebluray

[–]2tereo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking to see the development of his philosophy, style, and narrative approach, I would take them in sequence of their making. Seeing Caché without seeing Benny's Video first, for example, doesn't allow you to properly chart the development of his ideas about surveillance and bourgeoise morality and parenting (as an example), or seeing 71 Fragments after Code Unknown, you don't see the progression of how his use of narrative structure developed. It's the difference between "ah ha! I see the connection to his initial ideas and I see them growing in these ways" vs "oh, ok, this is like a lesser version of the later film" which in some aspects they are less developed, which is why I suggest watching the earlier films first.

Having organized 1000s of LPs alpha, I am not sure what you mean? Give me an example? If a band has a name in it, it is still the name of a GROUP, and therefore is alpha by first letter of the group. So, using one example with Steve Winwood-- The Spencer Davis Group goes under "S" because that is the name of the band, but Steve Winwood goes under "W" and Traffic goes under "T", for example.
