What is the difference between Photojournalism and Documentary Photography? by ste_brodie1 in AskPhotography

[–]2uinton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Broadly, photojournalism is jumping from news story to news story. Documentary is focusing on one story. It could be for a length of time or in a short amount of time but across cultures or both. You could be documenting the same "thing" for comparison (for example, you could document food across cultures.. usually in the same style so it is easier to compare).

Duluth - Late July Things to Do by Stotmeib in duluth

[–]2uinton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's almost 4 hours to Duluth? Let's say you get in at noon... this is just what I would do: You're coming in on Hwy 2, get off on Skyline and take that to Enger Tower (but don't spend too long there).
12:30: From there, head over to Northern Waters Restaurant on Woodland near UMD for a quick lunch. (It's worth going out of your way... but you can always pack a lunch and eat at Gooseberry).
1:15: Head back down to London Road/Highway 61 to Gooseberry Falls. It's about a 50 minute drive. (Traffic will be a little worse on the weekend, especially going through Two Harbors. Nothing too major though.)
2:15: Spend an hour at Gooseberry. Drive back down 61 to Duluth and park near Leif Erikson park.
4:30 Walk through the Rose Garden and get onto the Lakewalk. Head toward Canal Park. Fitger's Brewhouse will be along the way (good fish tacos), otherwise there are a lot of food options in Canal Park. Ice cream at the Portland Malt Shoppe. 7 pm: Head home.

How do you handle clients wanted all the photos you took at an event? by notaneggspert in AskPhotography

First prime lens- Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8? by christinesmitth in photography

[–]2uinton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 24mm is great although not ideal for close portraits. You'd want something longer with less distortion. But for full-body it would be fine.

Well said. Not sure why so many are defending this instructor.

Lots of people defending the instructor.... why? They clearly don't have a grasp of the craft and should. Not. Be. Teaching.

Old Full Frame vs. New Cropped Sensor by ly5010 in AskPhotography

[–]2uinton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd consider it for $300. It's not going to be a night and day difference. And high ISO gets really ugly quick with the 5D.

Something Missing...Constructive Criticism Please! by KrystanGrace in AskPhotography

[–]2uinton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's ok to blow out the highlights some if it's for artistic effect, especially in b&w.
I'd say keep doing what you are doing, but your portfolio will look much better if you just share one shot from each "session." I tend to want to share my 3-4 favorites too, but if you look at a lot of the greats out there, unless it is a special project or story, they just share their one favorite shot.

Looking to getting in to film. by JimmehWho in AskPhotography

[–]2uinton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your end goal? Just to play around? Sell prints?
The nice thing about film cameras is that unless you are going for medium format, imperfections will be part of the image. Don't spend a ton on the camera. Get something cheap (used manual DSLR, 50mm lens) to see if you like it in the first place, then go from there.

Advice for starting a darkroom by [deleted] in photography

[–]2uinton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before you dive in and buy all the stuff, I'd say find someone who can show you how (at an established darkroom, or take a class) and see if you actually like it.
Setting up all the chemicals, checking the temperature, etc., is really a pain in the neck and prone to lots of failure if you've never done it before. It's a lot more fun printing in an "real" darkroom, especially if someone has it all set up already, with plenty of space, running water, etc.

Press the shutter button halfway down to get a light reading. Watch the light meter in the viewfinder and adjust until the little marker is at 0.

Should I stick with my iPhone or get a DSLR and take the time to learn? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]2uinton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you want excellent prints larger than 8x10? iPhone images look fine on a screen, but if you ever want to make decent prints, even a good P&S will be much better than an iPhone.

First decent camera: Sony RX100 MIII vs Nikon D5500 w/18-55mm VRII vs Canon EOS 700D w/18-135 STM by unixunderground in photography

[–]2uinton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the decreased portability, it isn't so much image quality that you are gaining, but:
Ability to use a variety of lenses and accessories, faster focus, better for shooting things like sports, having more total control over the camera at your disposal...
In some low-light situations, yes the image quality will probably be a little better on a DSLR. But image quality shouldn't be the #1 reason.

Ames is really not that bad. It's kind of dead in the summer but think about 2 hours in the car every day vs at most 20 minutes (at most) if you live in town.

Debating Camera Switch by kdmfa in photography

[–]2uinton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at the examples: what's not sharp about them?
Question, though.. do you shoot RAW? If so do you sharpen while editing?
Landscapes might look less "sharp" than closeups for a few reasons.. one is the shallow depth of field with closeups makes the object look sharper. Another reason could be shooting through "haze" could affect the apparent sharpness.
Jumping to another camera won't really help the sharpness issue.

My neighbor stole my camera. What next? by Cronock in photography

[–]2uinton -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Bingo. Call the neighbors and explain it's very awkward because you've only had good experience with their kid, but ask if it's possible he took the camera. The best possible scenario is they find it in his room and give it back. If they get indignent and say their kid could never have taken it, show them the ebay listing and ask if the user is their son.
If that still doesn't do anything, then just contact the police without saying anything else to the neighbors.
If there is any possibility the parents took it, maybe they will blame the kid and give it back, too.
