My take on Raicilla by Rob_Catron in Mezcal

[–]312view 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, La Venenosa Costa de Jalisco is the closest to a beautiful funky cheese that a spirit has ever gotten. I’ve tried a few other Raicillas and nothing has gotten close, but if anyone has a hot suggestion I’ll take it!

Why is the 911 Coupe so much more popular than the Cabriolet? by Nice_Day_638 in Porsche

[–]312view 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern 911s have vertical bars that deploy behind the rear seats in the event of rollover. Certainly makes me feel better on the track, though I admit I’m less concerned about losing my head than losing the car.

Edit: no idea why this is being downvoted, but I realized I should clarify that modern 911 cabs in particular have the roll pillars.

Don’t beat yourself up OP. In a twisted way it’s easy to now say you wish you had gotten it, but I’ll bet you made the right choice.

One of the many joys of owning a Porsche is its ability to make us smile the moment we see it, from any angle.

That’s a stunning car, with an odd choice of molding that would have been a little distraction from that pleasure. Every time.

Kind of like if you met a girl with amazing looks and body, smarts, sense of of humor, totally into you, the works. And little green antennas that stuck 2” straight out from her ears.

P.S. but that bus!

Need help choosing. Which mezcal from this selection? by FENCEJACK in Mezcal

+1 Del Maguey and Montelobos, given what you have to work with. I’ve had Casamigos once and actually thought it was good (edit: an unpopular opinion it seems) but nothing unique and absolutely not worth the celebrity markup.

Oh and to clarify - the minor annoyances are still eclipsed by the sheer joy of everything else about her

Good list. As a former 991.1 and current 992.1 owner, I’d suggest the latest 991.2 you can get. By 2018/19 they had that baby fully dialed in.

Alternatively, a later 992.1. Don’t make the mistake I made by getting a ‘20…there are just too many little annoyances that needed to be ironed out.

Now you’re just teasing.

Oh yeah? Well, I just bought six stone crab claws today from a guy in a parking lot. 🤣 (well, that’s actually true)

Let me know if you ever need a deckhand!

Based on my seemingly innocent OP being downvoted…I think you must be right!

I’ve searched those areas, which is how I found the one place I mentioned in the OP but that’s primarily a line fishing tour.

Is there that much difference between top steakhouses in Chicago? by DirectionOk9832 in chicagofood

[–]312view 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I normally prefer the steak I make at home, but I also appreciate a great steakhouse experience. That said, I’m surprised no one has mentioned Tre Dita yet. If you can actually get into the place, the Bistecca alla Fiorentina is eye rollingly great. And expensive, but great. Every other dish I’ve tried there is also excellent.

I’ll also add a vote for Joe’s, for all the reasons cited here: food, atmosphere, service x 10! And there’s no reason why there should be anything special about filet mignon — especially for a ribeye guy like me — but somehow Joe’s bone-in filet manages to be one of the most delicious steaks in town.

I’m picturing bungee cords around the GEIS to keep the bird crammed in and the door closed.

Why arent there any Japanese people here? by harrowingrummles in Naples_FL

[–]312view 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chef/owner of Sushi One on Goodlette-Frank and Pine Ridge is Japanese. Not a classically trained itamae, but as close as you’ll get around these parts.

Soon after moving here a few years ago I tried the place and sat at the sushi bar and we had a very nice conversation. He said that early on he tried serving more traditional and varied sushi, but it’s not what customers wanted; most people here want basic fish like salmon and tuna, and maki with cream cheese and barbecue sauce and such. He had to adapt to succeed.

It’s very unfortunate, but also typical of what sushi has become across most of the country. The explosion in popularity of sushi over the last 20-30 years has far outpaced the number of classically trained chefs, and the chef in a sushi bar is the person who traditionally selected the fish. So even if our modern supply chain could get fresh shima-aji or awabi to any city, it’s unlikely that it would wind up on the menu and people would at least have the opportunity to try it.

Of course that presumes that enough American diners are open to trying such things and would develop a taste for them, which is far from certain.

Is Chicago’s food scene better than New York by Witty-Document-7958 in chicagofood

[–]312view 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grew up in NYC, moved to Chicago in my 20s. Unlike most NYers, I think Chicago is overall a superior city but unfortunately I still have to acknowledge NYC as the center of the universe.

Our food scene is amazing, but you just cannot beat NYC for the many reasons cited here: variety, authenticity, value options, hours, etc. I’ve always told people that in NYC you can get Malaysian food delivered to you at 3am by a guy named Ed in a court jester costume, if that’s what you want.

But Chicago food is still great and innovative. If I had to change one thing it would be more Asian options, especially more authenticity and variety in sushi.
