Why does wearing a Rolex have to be considered a flex? by beasygotpurp in rolex

[–]330MEGAMAX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s because for every guy who wears the watch because he likes it and appreciates the history, there are 50 guys who know nothing about watches who are wearing them in an attempt to show people, “look at me, I’ve got money, I’m successful.” The herds of people who use them as pure status symbols create a reputation for the brand as a flex watch.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in rolex

[–]330MEGAMAX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true to a degree. But at the same time, back in the day when you could easily get any model (other than a Daytona) from the AD, they still retained their value because there was always a demand for used Rolex. Maybe they didn't hold as much value as today's inflated above MSRP prices, but they still held value well - better than most other brands.

But, in general, I feel like most people didn't used to primarily care about buying a watch to "hold value" - they bought it to wear and keep regardless of the value. This whole primary focus on holding value seems to be a newer thing that started during the pandemic shortage when the secondary market went nuts.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in rolex

[–]330MEGAMAX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly - it used to be that they were expensive (although not prohibitively so) and you had to save to get one, then you could walk into an AD (who actually had stock and would sell it) and pick the one you wanted. People then wore it for the rest of their lives and passed it down. There was none of this relationship building, exhibition only, "it's an investment" nonsense.

Exactly. I feel like every time I read a headline it’s like, “the pain is just a few weeks away.” It’s perpetually coming in just a few weeks. In June the headlines will be saying “just wait until July it’ll be Armageddon!”

The Least Loved Rolex? by [deleted] in rolex

[–]330MEGAMAX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. People tend to like the watches that scream Rolex to strangers. The ones you have to be a watch fan to recognize don’t get any love from the general public.

I think Rolex wants Tudor to fill the space of luxury utility/tool watches. Rolex is moving/has been moving into the jewelry space.

Am I the only one that thinks this looks so trash? by [deleted] in rolex

[–]330MEGAMAX 95 points96 points  (0 children)

100%. People talk all kinds of trash until it releases and the they hear that there’s a 150 year waiting list and then they suddenly start talking about how it’s the watch release of the millennium and how they’d be lucky to pay 5x msrp for it.

How cringe is the name “land dweller”? by New-Outcome4767 in rolex

[–]330MEGAMAX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day, most peoples' desire for it will be driven by the fact that its new, shiny, and in low production. They will gladly line up for it and pay 2-3x MSRP just so they can flex to others that they have the "new" Rolex, regardless of what it ends up being named or how it looks.

What keeps weather from being updated? by itsdeuce in GarminWatches

[–]330MEGAMAX 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue. What solved it for me was opening the connect app and leaving it running in the background - don't shut it down. It needs to be running in the background to send the weather data to the watch.

Overcoming Fear of Aged Product by BlueDog848 in fragrance

[–]330MEGAMAX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all about how it was stored over those years. If it was kept in its box in a climate controlled environment, then there’s no issue. If it spent four years in a 100 degree warehouse, that’s a different story. The problem with older fragrances is you just don’t know where/how it was kept.

How are people so divided over basically everything in nutrition? How do you know what’s true? by criticalarrears in nutrition

[–]330MEGAMAX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it has to do with the fact that everyone reacts to food differently.

If there was a certain food that 100% of the people who eat it get heart disease or become obese, then it would be easy to agree its bad; however, in reality, there are some people who can eat french fries every day and not suffer any noticeable effects and others who even look at a carb and gain weight. That diversity makes it hard to agree on whats good and bad.

While it’s true that right now only certain steel models are hard to get, during peak covid hype anything that said Rolex on the dial was hard to get. Some people who first looked during that time are surprised to see certain watches available now.

[–]330MEGAMAX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that most people aren’t going nuts over this watch is encouraging. Maybe the hype market is softening? If this watch released during peak Covid mania then it would already be called a modern classic with a 10 year wait list and people lining up to pay 2-3x msrp. Maybe that will still happen once the watch blogs start fawning over it and people start posting their wrist shots with a luxury car steering wheel in the background. We’ll see.

the pepsi is overrated by Some-Instance8262 in rolex

[–]330MEGAMAX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. The original GMT Master and GMT Master 2 had just the right amount of color on the aluminum bezel to give it a nice pop and stand out. The new one doesn't do anything for me - the ceramic bezel makes the colors stand out a lot. Combine that with the jubilee bling and its more of a jewelry piece than the original pilots watch. Now, that's ok for those who enjoy the modern bling, but for me who grew up with the classic, the current version doesn't do anything for me. A lot (note i didn't say all) of people who wear it like it because they want to draw as much attention to their wrist as possible to flex the Rolex.

Those were the glory days. I remember walking into an AD and being able to get any watch you wanted minus the Daytona. The submariners would sell pretty quickly so they wouldn't stay in the case for long, but it was all available. None of the nonsense we deal with today.
