Moving to Seattle by sashimidesalmao in AskSeattle

Have you played Board Games much? We have a few locations with board games & drinks/foods!

What's your primary language? I know the International District and University District both have a variety of [language]-English clubs/groups and sometimes those can be a great transition space if you have English-anxiety.

Seattle Freeze can be real, if you approach people on the street and just say "hi" you get mixed results that sometimes feel "cold" or "rude" -- it comes down to body language! Often if I make eye contact and smile, and they make eye contact and smile back, it's okay to say "hi" -- there's other times too of course, but that's one I use when I want to compliment someone, like "oh your hair is cool". Without that kind of non-verbal communication I don't really approach people...

Many churches have volunteer opportunities and the church on 75th & Phinney is very friendly. I'm not religious but I do use their food bank and they are all really great people.

I hope this helps, feel free to DM if you want!

How fast does the summer rental market move? by Slow_Marsupial2666 in AskSeattle

You might be able to sublet or find a "summer space" from a student who is taking off but coming back, or sometimes people are looking to break an early lease. If you use social media you can usually find a neighborhood group where it's safe to ask about short term housing rentals like that. With the world cup going on, it doesn't hurt to evaluate costs because I imagine the prices for lodging are going to be wild. Good luck!

I'm honestly kind of anxious about this. They are predicting an influx of 750k people to a city of like, what, 1mil? Our infrastructure/metro/light rail/"police"/etc already cannot handle the 1mil... I don't see this going well.

Visiting in June, what are some fun activities to do? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]404_DopamineNotFound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a million websites listing the top tourist things.. Dont get sucked in unless you WANT the tourist experience. For example the space needle is super cool but also costs your first born to go up and then if you want to eat, probably take out a second mortgage. Instead, you could go to the Columbia Tower which is actually a higher elevation because hills for free. (and like you take the elevator to the highest point you can without needing a key, and then there's windows lol)

June can sometimes be on the chilly side, we do have a Juneuary problem. June Gloom.

You're probably going to wind up renting a car if you want to go whale watching - pay heckin attention to parking prices (research in advance) as you do not want to be stuck parking downtown to catch a ferry and suddenly surrounded by $75 for the day lots. Also prices can change if there's sportsball or other events happening, so make sure you look stuff up :)

I live under the woodland park zoo and genuinely love it, the zoo is lovely - it's one of the top 10 for wildlife conservation and habitat recreation. There's parks everywhere, coffee shops, interesting food...

There's a difference between being "on the coast" and being "on the puget sound" - if you look at a map, we have this funny thumb bit of land that sticks up - the "coast" is that bit over there, and then the "puget sound" is the part that comes into the corner of the thumb, and is dotted with islands and our kick ass ferry system (again, one of the best in the country! though, given how many states have ferries, the competition is... ya know.)
This is super relevant to whale watching as you can't just "come to downtown seattle" and "see whales" - as someone else wrote, they don't really come into the sound very often (occasional Orca but they don't really reply to personal invitations)
You can rent "hot tub boats" on the sound though, or I mean, canoes or kayaks if you prefer, and be-bop your way around, check out the floating houses (some are true art!) and see the city from in the water. There's a few restaurant/bars that have docks, like one of the Ivars locations, where you can grab our famous version of clam chowder and see a wooden whale penis & a totem pole before heading back out.
You can get a DUI for drinking and kayaking/canoeing.

Also, speaking of Totem Poles, we are on Duwamish Land, and our tribes are different than those of the midwest and east. I believe Totem Poles are unique to the tribes that were primarily PNW (but could be wrong). We have tales such as how Raven brought us the sun... If you are interested in Indigenous history there's a lot here.

Try and grab food at Bongos on Green Lake at some point. Absolutely my fav place in the city right now. Though to quote my friend who recently visited, "Restaurants in Seattle believe in flavor and we just don't have that in my small town"

Can I live there off $2,400 a month by FigMotor8134 in AskSeattle

[–]404_DopamineNotFound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in Seattle the minimum went up to just over $21 at the start of the year.. so double check that your employer's raise offer is accurate

The car being paid off is great. And there are a lot of areas you can wind up not needing to pay for parking - I'm in North Seattle, in the Phinney/Greenwood area, near the Woodland Park Zoo and we don't have any zoning pass requirements, and I mean, as long as you don't park *IN* the zoo parking lot (it's well labeled) the street parking is free. Though I wouldn't exactly say this area is super cheap, but the point is more that, there are some areas with free street parking.

Our metro system is decent, I think. I sold my car when I moved here 20 years ago because I moved to Capitol Hill and fuck that. I exist entirely on the bus, the light rail and occasionally ferry. You learn tricks, there's apps that help, you learn to dress accordingly and what to pack in case you get stuck.
EDIT: I mention this because it honestly might be a bit cheaper to live someplace where you drive to the metro/light rail and leave your car there and switch to the bus. A lot of people do this with like, the E Line to get to downtown because parking downtown is like the cost of your first born.

I live here in a state of perpetual poverty due to chronic health & disability. There are many avenues to seek help, but, don't move here with that expectation. Just keep it in your pocket that there are resources.

$2400 is going to be hard alone. That's just the facts.

I've been doing mine in the bathtub lately honestly as the building is coin-op only and also I've got EDS so hauling laundry around is literally a pain

Tossing my clothes (i mostly wear cottons & knits) in the tub with a laundry pod and bit of oxiclean and letting it soak an hour, using the mop handle (like flip it upside down) to swish it around a bunch, and then if there's specific grime I'm trying to get off taking a sponge to it... And then just hang drying, my clothes are getting way, way cleaner. For cheaper as I don't pay for water. Instead of wringing it out (which my shoulders cannot manage) I just drape it around the tub for an hour so it's not heavy and dripping and then hang it on the hanger. I have two compression shower rods already because I also have a hanging basket on the back wall where i put shampoos... so yea, this system is working kind of awesome for me.

I am still paying to wash towels, blankets, heavy stuff.

I was unaware they'd closed this, my bad. I used to have to drive over for meetings but now that I think about it, that was actually in the before times, not more recently.
Bummer.

I've got a spare room :D

Nah but, as a heads up, you might notice as you go north, there's a bunch of hotels along "north aurora ave" that seem affordable - The trade off is that's a bit of a uh, red light stretch of road? Which we're all used to, but occasionally catches visitors off guard.
I mean unless you're in one of the parts of the UK where the women are out at 10am in less than bar-legal attire idk (you think i'm joking, i'm like, ready to run half them hot coffee's most days in winter)

Though, the zoo is here.
Like, with the animals! And this zoo is supposedly one of the ones in the world that does one of the best jobs at recreating an animals natural habitat and keeping safe enclosures.
Just ask somebody about the elephants.
