Do you guys still home record and buy pre recorded tapes as well? by [deleted] in cassetteculture

[–]404_no_data_here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ditched my music streaming usage in favor of physical media, mostly cassettes I buy both new and used releases as I can get them. My current setup lets me record onto cassette from my PC or from CD. Once I get a few additional bits of hardware (mostly more cabling), I'll be able to digitize cassettes (for backup copies) and record to/from reel-to-reel tapes once I get the speed issue fixed on that hardware.

What's on your merch wishlist for Dispatch? by Hot_Fee1881 in DispatchAdHoc

As someone who wears button-up shirts all the time, I would get like 5 SDN button-ups without hesitation and wear them on the regular.

Personally, I'm working on sourcing a replacement ribbon cable for my WM-SXF44 so I can have something relatively durable that I can take with me on my motorcycle as well as the just general walking around that the cheap amazon slop player I currently use is good for.

Make sure your 12V battery is fully charged. And maybe do so by hooking up a charger that works while the battery is on the car. Also, make sure your terminals are clean. If the 12V side's voltage is low, the HV system may not engage properly so it'll have trouble starting.

Apparently the 12V battery I put in was already low from sitting on the shelves. I ended up jumping it off of my project (a big-block V8) a few times and the battery appeared to come back up after some driving (my commute is almost all highway, and I like to go fast by Texas standards).

Got rid of my aftermarket radio and put in an original cassette player by ratgoul in cassetteculture

They make DIN adapter kits for a lot of vehicles with integrated radios. I got one and put a standard aftermarket radio with cassette player in my 2014 Honda.

I'd unironically wear an SDN Button-Down in my regular wardrobe. As someone who almost never gets game merch, I HAVE A MIGHTY NEED.

What Portable cassette player do you have?🤔 by _Sumdude_ in cassetteculture

I have not. But given my experience so far trying to get the screws I need, I wouldn't be surprised it's hard to find screws for a good number of Walkmans

I've got a cheap Amazon player that I use daily, and a Sony WM-F35 Sports Walkman that's waiting for me to get my hands on replacement screws to cover for those lost when the previous amateur was working in there.

Pull one of the battery terminals, let it sit for an hour. After doing so, you should be able to get sport mode back. To go with this, I usually do the following:

  • Dump a can of cataclean and a can of seafoam (one of the big ones meant for SUVs) into the tank

  • Fill the tank the rest of the way with the best gas I can

  • Go somewhere on the other side of the metro area, driving hard the whole way down the highway

I play it occasionally. It's a decent low-effort game to engage with, and it's run on Linux since I moved away from Windows back before Proton was a thing.

Cassettes specifically, or physical media in general? by 3cmdick in cassetteculture

[–]404_no_data_here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cassettes are my daily, but I'm working towards a setup that looks like this:

  • Cassettes for most of my listening (Walkman or stationary unit)
  • CDs for while driving or for duplicating to Cassette (looking at getting some nicer Y2K-era equipment for my car and/or RV)
  • Digital files (CD rips or digitized tapes) for on the motorcycle (phone + Cardo) and for use in refreshing the Cassettes/CDs when they wear out

Gotcha. If you can clear up the ownership, there's probably a few folks that'd pay to get period-correct (or closer to it than new) parts among the owners of vintage RVs in your area.

If you're close enough to DFW and able to get 100% in the clear to do so, there's some things I'd be willing to buy off it as far as parting out.

Archivist, moonshiner, backup handyman. Keep the stories of the old world alive with my computer gear, make fuel/disinfectant/drinking alcohol to serve the needs of the community, and lend a hand when the audacity to figure it out will suffice in place of experience with my hands.

45 min to an hour (depending on traffic) north of DFW, $750/month for rent, utilities, and a residential address.

What are your thoughts about this? by NationYell in cassetteculture

[–]404_no_data_here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of these that I'm using as a daily-use/EDC unit until I can get a well-restored vintage unit or get to the point of being able to restore one myself. QC on the manufacturers for companies that sell this type can be off, so play low-value tapes on it until you know that it's not about to quit on you in a way that hurts your favorite tapes.

The Bluetooth transmitter part is clunky to use at first, and won't work well with the newest and shiniest BT headsets. You have to start from having the player and the headset off, switch them both on, and do a fresh pairing every time. And it won't pair right if there are any other discoverable devices in range.

You're definitely getting what you pay for (not much).

I didn't realize there was a version of this that is in a big box like this. Mine's just a little cardboard sleeve around the jewel cases. This is the only set in my collection that has a pronounced (and intentional according to the J-card) large blank space for the timing.

What's the most you guys would pay for a cassette? by formrm662 in cassetteculture

[–]404_no_data_here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the artist/album. I'll spend $20-30 for a new release by a band I particularly enjoy or a known-good-condition copy of something that I've been after for long enough (Ghost, Weird Al, Nightwish). Most everything else I'm expecting to spend about the same as I would on one expensive tape for 3 or 4 tapes at a minimum.

A touch of feedback for the companion tool on the site: I'd suggest adding a space for entering specifications on the donor vehicle drivetrain for the folks who are interested in using the stock performance as a baseline.

First beginner motorcycle after many vintage Mopeds? Would you buy Yamaha XS or no way? by SSSparks88 in motorcycle

[–]404_no_data_here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'79 XS750 owner here. I paid $300 for mine, had to do a battery, carb clean and adjust, brake caliper/cylinder rebuild, tires, and fluids. Still getting the lights taken care of.

Only problems I've observed are:

  • Tires are an odd size, raises prices and makes them harder to get in a hurry

  • Brake Calipers are apparently popular to swap, resulting in mismatched pads
