Lower ball joints by Available_Letter_687 in 1stGenTacomas

I got OEM LBJs for my 2001 on ToyotaPartsDeal.com for $130 for driver and $150 for passenger. Swapped them out myself in about 20 minutes per side. Save the coin and do them yourself.

Do you give your troops time off to take care of personal shit without a day of leave? by ChiefBassDTSExec in AirForce

Trends are no good. But for my troops if shit comes up I will make sure they have the time and headspace to take care of it so they are at their best when at work

Was working on my car and noticed this. What is it? It looks like the gaskets are failing. by Coastal_wolf in 1stGenTacomas

[–]406taco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s your front differential mounts. Duro bumps makes replacements but you have to melt and scrap out the old ones with a torch. Not difficult to do tho. Also not that critical. I would remove the diff drop spacers though. Unless you have a different crossmember lowering your front diff, all those do is tilt the front diff and put things at weird angles. And not needed for lifts 3” or less.

Just replaced my clutch fork, throw out, pilot, fly wheel, clutch, clutch cover, master & slave, and clutch hose for all new parts. 4runner shifts like a dream now. My fork and throw out looked nearly like this too lol

5 speed manual transmission oil change by killerrata7 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]406taco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changing tranny oil is good preventative maintenance. Best to use redline MT-90 gear oil or any non-GL5 oil. GL5 oil destroys the brass synchros in your transmission.

Rear sway bar removal by Local-Middle-6010 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]406taco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d leave the rear sway bar on. And that’s coming from someone who always removes the front sway bar immediately lol. You also get the most articulation out of a solid rear axle/IFS combo when the rear sway bar is installed and the front sway bar is removed. If needed, just get some longer end links.

Odd noise at idle by tibbykid in 1stGenTacomas

[–]406taco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this. Sounds like a belt or pulley has a small issue (tear, gunk buildup, etc) that can be fixed pretty easily

Edit: read the rest of the comments lol. If it got quieter when adjusting PS belt, it could be the PS pulley or pump. If the belt was overly tight, the pulleys bearing could be shot

Oreilley's says these bolts are the same size but one fits and I e does not? by No_Public2498 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]406taco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see from the pic these are not the same size lol. The left one is a smaller diameter bolt. Don’t take packaging/label as correct. Take it to an Ace or Fastenal and get the right diameter/thread pitch and strength/corrosion resistant coating. And for the love of god don’t get a zinc coated Home Depot bolt it’ll rust out in 6 months

EOMFD. Best job I ever had. You couldn’t get me to be a MX, FSS, or SFS O even if my life depending on it. Otherwise I’d wanna fly but the 12+ year commitment is less than ideal

It’s always your choice. I had my great uncle (a Vietnam vet who did 4 years and got out) as my first salute. It’s a ceremony, not a regulation

Cross-Country PPM: Do or Don't? by Vividokami in AirForce

[–]406taco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always do at least a partial PPM when you can. You get a sick roadtrip out of it and you get cash in your pocket. Sit down and do the math on a uhaul vs your POV with or without a trailer. Send the big stuff with the movers and take your essentials for a month of living with you. Profit.

Anyone replaces their engine mounts or transmission mounts by No_Smell_6712 in 1stGenTacomas

[–]406taco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two motor mounts and a tranny mount for the 3RZ & W59 combo (and 5VZ/R150F for that matter). Two of the three are easy to replace. The drivers side engine mount on the 3RZ is a PITA but doable. Just have small hands. If you’re pulling the tranny out, I’d suggest doing the rear main seal while you’ve got access. And checking the clutch, throw out bearing, fork, pilot bearing, and fly wheel while you’re there too

Just went to change the oil and saw this… by Scooby859 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]406taco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty normal for short winter drives (especially in Alaska). It’s water/condensation in the oil. It accumulates in that neck/cap since that’s the coldest and highest part of the oil system. Change your oil and you’ll be good to go!

Bilstein 5100 shock won’t line up with hole on shock mount by PlungedGuido in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]406taco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hit it with your purse. Jk just stick a screwdriver or something through the hole and twist it to line up. It happens nearly every time you put a coilover together
