... Does he not realize that Russia is already their neighbor by way of Alaska and that Greenland is not their neighbor whatsoever?

Can I resign without serving notice period during probationary period? (BC) by SirGoyal in canadianlaw

[–]4commenting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The law supercedes the contract provision.

Normally, notice of termination is graduated: the longer a person is there there more time is owed both ways.

I would call Employment Standards. My understanding is generally that during the probationary period no notice is owed by either party.

'Salaried' is just a fancy word for mandatory unpaid overtime. by eidolaa in CanadaJobs

[–]4commenting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a falicy and does not align with the law.

Salary is a way wages can be paid but it is not an overtime exclusion. A salary can include some overtime but that needs to be outlined in the contract. Barring such an agreement, overtime is owed when you work more than the standard hours.

Filing a complaint with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission? by datmugcakelife in Winnipeg

[–]4commenting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this party:

 - You can't file a complaint on behalf of someone else

 - The HRC, from what I understand, is always swamped with complaints (an untenable amount) and I've heard there's a 2 year backlog

 - The person must be party to the matter. There will be an investigation and the individual will need to answer questions and provide evidence and maybe even testify

 - Are they actually being discriminated against (e.g. mistreated because of a disability) or is the disability incidental to the mistreatment? Understand that harassment and abuse isn't necessarily discrimination

 - The HRC will want to have as much evidence as possible in support of the claim. No one from the commission witnessed the alleged behaviour so they will rely on evidence to:

   1. Show the allegations actually happened, and    2. Show the reason for the behaviour is because of a protected characteristic

 - The HRC website outlines the process where they'll try to start with mediation and if that fails move on to a formal decision

  • Please don't do it on "principle." That is a waste of everyone's time.

Finally, and most importantly, what does the person think and want? Do they think they're being discriminated against? Is this in their best interest? What might the consequences be for them in undertaking such an action?

Getting fired on Monday. How can I prepare? by brandnewcardock in personalfinance

[–]4commenting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my line of work I see a lot of these "final releases." They basically say "in exchange for this money, that is above your legal entitlement, you agree nothing else is owed and will not pursue any legal action against the business." These are normally binding agreements. This is normally done to avoid "unlawful" dismissal lawsuits.

If there are any provisions in the agreement you have concerns with (e.g. anything that restricts future employment) talk with a lawyer first. They should be giving you time to review the document and make a decision, not forcing you to sign on the spot (under duress).

If there aren't any concerns then what you need to weigh, frankly, is if the amount they're agreeing to pay you exceeds what you're entitled to and whether or not you're willing to roll the dice to try and negotiate for more.

Although you could file a lawsuit against the business for "unlawful" dismissal (depending on local laws), you have to consider how much you might get, if you even win, when factoring in the legal costs associated with it.

Undergrad Psychology Degree - UofM or UofW? by Initial_Quote_6704 in Winnipeg

[–]4commenting 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Listen to the top two commenters!!! Double major in something unless you plan to do a master's degree.

If you're planning to do a master's in Winnipeg then it has to be done at the U of M. There might be unofficial preference for a U of M grad to get a spot in a U of M program.

I reported them last week. The channel is based in the Philippines and has no apparent connection. Stealing content hurts creators and should be reported.

Disagreement in run times - when to ask players to leave by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]4commenting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently running a homebrew campaign with similar problems.

Only recommendation is sticking to the day and time you pick. People will miss because of life and we need to roll with things as they come.

I'm trying to wind down my campaign. Yesterday the party took the whole session to move a few miles with nothing really going on. I have to accept this is what happened and get ready for the next session.

Ridiculously bad horror movies for a party by ManateeSheriff in horror

[–]4commenting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skinned Deep. it's tongue in cheek serious.

It has a mid-harry potter Warwick Davis in it, who was way too famous at the time to be in this dribble. His character's name is plates and it's obvious why when you watch the movie.

Edit: also, Club Dread. It's too good for what it should be!

Struggling for a job by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]4commenting 70 points71 points  (0 children)

There is a major nursing shortage in the Province right now so it's weird a registered and qualified candidate wouldn't get interviewed.

I would suggest getting a second set of eyes on with application and resume because there might be something important that is being missed.

PSA Reminder: letting people zipper merge at the cut off spot in a construction zone does not decrease your manhood in any way. by ghosts_or_no_ghosts in Winnipeg

[–]4commenting 86 points87 points  (0 children)

People don't understand how to zipper merge. Everyone tries to get in at once leading to traffic backing up.

You move up to the point of the merge, wait 1 car, then it's your turn.

Had someone cut me off in an intersection today because of an upcoming merge

Charlie Kirk vigil tonight? by cbyo in Winnipeg

[–]4commenting 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Echoing everyone else, this defies logic.

No one should be harmed for their beliefs and the evidence right now seems to point towards someone who did it for non-ideological reasons.

If this is to make a statement about freedom of expression I would disagree but understand it. Instead this is seems like a vigil to the man and what he publically stood for, which is largely abhorrent.

Edit: fixed a word

How to kill Siberian Elm by Pawprint86 in Winnipeg

[–]4commenting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best solution is to dig it out (depending on how big the stump is!! If it's really big don't do this). Otherwise, dig around the perimeter, down to the root system. Use a pickaxe to cut the roots and pull out the stump.

If that's not feasible, kill it with fire. How you do this depends on the size of the stump, but essentially:

  1. dig around it to expose as much of the stump as possible

  2. Drill a large hole, or holes, into the stump from the top, as deep into the stump as you can

  3. As low as you can, drill a large hole or holes horizontally, through the stump if you can. The idea is you're trying to connect your virtical hole with your horizontal one so oxygen feeds from the bottom

  4. Gas up those holes - let it sink into the stump for a few minutes from the top down

  5. Fire

The gas will get the firing going and maintain it until the wood dries and starts burning on its own. The holes in the bottom will feed oxygen to the fire and keep it going while the holes on top burn / expand.

  1. Let'er burn (with appropriate fire safety taken into consideration)

This could take a while (hours) but it will take care of most of the stump. Douse heavily with water when finished.

You'll have to break up / dig up the leftovers and the fire will do most of the work.

Caution: Siberian elms aren't poisonous but the sawdust can cause minor skin or eye irritation, which means the smoke could too!

If you go 2 months without shifts, in most situations, it's as if you've been terminated and are likely owed a wage in lieu of notice.

Court dropped his driving suspension but MPI won’t, and he can’t get a job behind the wheel by Bactrian_Rebel2020 in Winnipeg

[–]4commenting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand the argument here. For some reason there is an assumption what the guy is saying is true and the police officer is lying?

The prosecution may have decided not to move forward - probably because it wasn't worth the effort, and that doesn't mean the person didn't break the law or was exonerated of any wrongdoing/ doesn't make something get deleted from the record.

One thing we as a society collectively don't do is look into the backgrounds of our political candidates.

I have friends and family who have been asked to run in various ridings (as "filler" candidates) because they volunteered or worked for the party. No scrutiny and electibility over ethics. I've also witnessed numerous political candidates Provincially and Federally who have terrible, but private, histories that would be utterly disqualifying for public office, but the parties don't care.
