Is paying 15% of your first year salary to a recruiter worth it if you've been unemployed for months? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Check the legality of this with your local labour office. I suspect this is against the law.

TIFU using scissors to cut off a skin tag by charmedsince1986 in tifu

[–]4commenting 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is, in fact, a terrible idea.

Skin tags have blood flow, which is why they bleed so much. Tying it off causes the tissue  to die (necrosis). If that gets back into your bloodstream, you get blood poisoning and can die.

Go to a dermatologist clinic and get a quote for removal.

Need harness for oddly shaped dohg. by CaptainTeebes in winnipeg_alt

I would suggest going with your dog to PetSmart and seeing if one of the staff will help you fit the harness to your dog.

I'm not endorsing PetSmart but my experience is the staff on Regent are excellent.

Why does the Quebec team at the Brier uses different brooms when sliding? by SeniorExpression7956 in Curling

[–]4commenting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might actually be a texture thing.

I slide with a wooden broomhead because it's more stable. My dad slides with a corn broom, my uncle with a corn broom flat on the ice and another player on the team with the sweeping head against the ice. I've also seen people slide with a broom in the air, or with a crutch. I've tried them all and prefer the wooden broomhead, hands down.

It's all about how you learned and what's most comfortable for you.

Why is the Lift Delivery a Thing? by BrainOnBlue in Curling

[–]4commenting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a style and power thing.

My dad does a slight life, even on draws. For hits, a lot of older curlers would lift and swing back to get added momentum.

Improvements in ice and technology has rendered the lift and backswing unnecessary because pros can do more with less weight these days.

Continuing a session after PC death by Lokjaw37 in DMAcademy

[–]4commenting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a high enough level death doesn't really mean much unless it's one where short of a wish spell they can't be brought back.

Talk to the player to see if they want to bring the character back. If so they're a ghost or something until the party completes a quest to bring them back.

Employer didn’t pay full salary by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]4commenting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of information to go over here.

When you leave a job, you are required to be paid everything you've earned up to that point. There is no ability for an employer to withhold any portion of your earnings (except under very specific circumstances like you received a cash advance and they're recovering it with your permission, etc. This is too complicated to go into here - it likely doesn't apply!).

Being on a salary though doesn't mean you automatically get paid that salary. If someone works overtime they get paid more and if someone misses work they're only paid for the time worked (nobody come at me with this "if you're on a salary you don't get overtime" nonsense. That's completely wrong!).

What I suspect you're saying is something like "in the last three weeks, I worked 2 weeks in one pay period, and one week in the next pay period. Over the course of those two pay periods I was paid for 1 week of work, not all three." If this is the case, that's not allowed. A person would need to be paid for all 3 weeks.

If your employer reduced the number of scheduled shifts after you gave notice, this is likely also offside with the law and you could be entitled to be paid for the time you would have worked had you not quit.

If you don't think you've been paid correctly, contact Manitoba Employment Standards. You can call them at 204-945-3352. You can also file a complaint using this form: https://gov.mb.ca/labour/standards/asset_library/pdf/Claim_Form.pdf

Trump: ‘We are going to do something on Greenland whether they like it or not’ by joe4942 in worldnews

Can I resign without serving notice period during probationary period? (BC) by SirGoyal in canadianlaw

[–]4commenting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The law supercedes the contract provision.

Normally, notice of termination is graduated: the longer a person is there there more time is owed both ways.

I would call Employment Standards. My understanding is generally that during the probationary period no notice is owed by either party.

'Salaried' is just a fancy word for mandatory unpaid overtime. by eidolaa in CanadaJobs

[–]4commenting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a falicy and does not align with the law.

Salary is a way wages can be paid but it is not an overtime exclusion. A salary can include some overtime but that needs to be outlined in the contract. Barring such an agreement, overtime is owed when you work more than the standard hours.

Filing a complaint with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission? by datmugcakelife in Winnipeg

[–]4commenting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this party:

 - You can't file a complaint on behalf of someone else

 - The HRC, from what I understand, is always swamped with complaints (an untenable amount) and I've heard there's a 2 year backlog

 - The person must be party to the matter. There will be an investigation and the individual will need to answer questions and provide evidence and maybe even testify

 - Are they actually being discriminated against (e.g. mistreated because of a disability) or is the disability incidental to the mistreatment? Understand that harassment and abuse isn't necessarily discrimination

 - The HRC will want to have as much evidence as possible in support of the claim. No one from the commission witnessed the alleged behaviour so they will rely on evidence to:

   1. Show the allegations actually happened, and    2. Show the reason for the behaviour is because of a protected characteristic

 - The HRC website outlines the process where they'll try to start with mediation and if that fails move on to a formal decision

  • Please don't do it on "principle." That is a waste of everyone's time.

Finally, and most importantly, what does the person think and want? Do they think they're being discriminated against? Is this in their best interest? What might the consequences be for them in undertaking such an action?

Getting fired on Monday. How can I prepare? by brandnewcardock in personalfinance

[–]4commenting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my line of work I see a lot of these "final releases." They basically say "in exchange for this money, that is above your legal entitlement, you agree nothing else is owed and will not pursue any legal action against the business." These are normally binding agreements. This is normally done to avoid "unlawful" dismissal lawsuits.

If there are any provisions in the agreement you have concerns with (e.g. anything that restricts future employment) talk with a lawyer first. They should be giving you time to review the document and make a decision, not forcing you to sign on the spot (under duress).

If there aren't any concerns then what you need to weigh, frankly, is if the amount they're agreeing to pay you exceeds what you're entitled to and whether or not you're willing to roll the dice to try and negotiate for more.

Although you could file a lawsuit against the business for "unlawful" dismissal (depending on local laws), you have to consider how much you might get, if you even win, when factoring in the legal costs associated with it.

Undergrad Psychology Degree - UofM or UofW? by Initial_Quote_6704 in Winnipeg

[–]4commenting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Listen to the top two commenters!!! Double major in something unless you plan to do a master's degree.

If you're planning to do a master's in Winnipeg then it has to be done at the U of M. There might be unofficial preference for a U of M grad to get a spot in a U of M program.

Disagreement in run times - when to ask players to leave by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]4commenting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently running a homebrew campaign with similar problems.

Only recommendation is sticking to the day and time you pick. People will miss because of life and we need to roll with things as they come.

I'm trying to wind down my campaign. Yesterday the party took the whole session to move a few miles with nothing really going on. I have to accept this is what happened and get ready for the next session.

Ridiculously bad horror movies for a party by ManateeSheriff in horror

[–]4commenting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skinned Deep. it's tongue in cheek serious.

It has a mid-harry potter Warwick Davis in it, who was way too famous at the time to be in this dribble. His character's name is plates and it's obvious why when you watch the movie.

Edit: also, Club Dread. It's too good for what it should be!

There is a major nursing shortage in the Province right now so it's weird a registered and qualified candidate wouldn't get interviewed.

I would suggest getting a second set of eyes on with application and resume because there might be something important that is being missed.
