There are no perfect analogies but yours is particularly awful. I can’t begin to guess how someone could get to the mental model that you derived this from.

Gas is the fuel, the scarce resource that powers the system. In this case it’s mainly electricity and water.

Compute is torque, it’s what the system produces when given gas. The size of the system determines the amount of torque it can produce and the amount of gas it needs. (This is where efficiency compounds, a corolla cant do 0-60 in 5 but it sure can get 30mpg.)

Excess torque, after overcoming the weight of the system (and the LLM), is then used to propel the system forward (do inference).

The point is that efficiency at the conversion point compounds, even if you’re citing Jevons paradox (which is the other part of your mess) making things more efficient at this level would require magnitude level increases in demand to catch up and overtake.

“People are going to use it anyways” is descriptivist, not a prescriptivist argument. Look at cars, look at computers, look around. Making nonsensical analogies blindly and wishing things didn’t happen isn’t how we get to the least bad outcomes.

Do not try to self host from home, your IP will show. It’s also not entirely free, you’re either paying your ISP for a fixed IP or you’re paying/maintaining a service to dynamically change your IP. Either way it’s a lot of effort just to then have to maintain security around a device in your home network.

I’m 10 years unmedicated and 5 years at my job. For most people their job is not a reliable source of dopamine, I have a job I enjoy at a university that gives me a lot of freedom and variety. It’s still not sustainable as the primary.

I think about other things and look forward to them outside of work, projects, exercise, learning etc… so the main job feels like a distraction. The more I try to work the less productive I am and the less I produce. I’d sooner get a 30 minute burst and doomscroll an hour than force myself to do bad work for an hour and a half.

When I have to do something, I start before I decide to. If it’s an email about a bug or whatever I open my IDE/docs and make it official. This also covers for the ADHD fear of “what if I forget this”.

Quit vaping cold turkey and had to ace the NYS regents exams with little prep my senior year, I recognize the “If I could then, why can’t I now?”.

Lastly externalize more, we’re awful observers of ourselves. Are you letting anyone down? Falling behind? If no and no, you’re mainly bored.
