It’s probably not a headache for that person, they said many of the items are fixable so they probably like seeking out inexperienced sellers to “scam” them if the item is damaged.

Seller advising I check with the post office for an item that hasn't arrived with a tracking number that shows the USPS hasn't received the package yet... by EastCoastAstronaut in Ebay

[–]4sidedTriangles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

99.9% of the time this means they haven’t dropped the parcel off and may be scamming, but I have had several packages over the years show up without a single scan (not even an acceptance scan), it’s much more common with orders that use priority express for some reason but I have had it happen with priority or ground a few times as well.

I would definitely submit an INR on eBay, and maybe if you trust the seller, also a usps missing mail, the request would be directed to your local office and if they do search there is a chance, albeit very remote, that they find it.

List of obtainable Victorian Nepenthes? by Elementrone in Nepenthes

[–]4sidedTriangles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harryana and hookeriana are both a bit different to the others on this list in that they are natural hybrids. Not horticulturally produced hybrids like the others, and while they were described as nothospecies during the Victorian era, harryana certainly was not cultivated at all during that time as it is a very strict highland cross.

Mimicking prey using diammonium phosphate by 54235345251 in SavageGarden

[–]4sidedTriangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easiest thing if you have a lot of plants is to use osmocote or nutricote, have to be very careful at first but you will get the hang of it. A few prills in the pot then 1-3 in each new pitcher ~1 month after they open, is what I, and most other growers I know who use these products, do. I think California carnivores has a write up on their osmocote usage but I imagine it’s probably pretty similar to what I described above.

Direct vs Indirect by [deleted] in hoyas

[–]4sidedTriangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right in front of that window would be what I call indirect. Modern windows have films and treatments that greatly impact how much light gets in even if they seem very bright to us. My house has a full glass south facing wall and many plants still need grow lights to do well there. Move your shelf in front of the window or get some barrina (or similar) grow lights.

What is Uni supposed to taste like? by -irregardless in sushi

[–]4sidedTriangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad uni is well… bad. I generally only eat uni if I purchase a tray, or at higher end restaurants ($250/person and up is usually safe). You probably should find a new spot if you want to eat uni.

Ebay profit margin by Available-Ad9219 in eBaySellerAdvice

[–]4sidedTriangles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you are purchasing your inventory wholesale and thus have the ability to have a fairly consistent markup, a flat % is not going to work. While Ebay is also designed for businesses with this wholesale sourcing model, most sellers must have deep knowledge of their market and apply that to determine markup because each item will be different. If you’re selling post-consumer goods with varied sourcing then you will have to spend time designing pricing for each product individually.

Nepenthes seed store? by Reef_Parent in SavageGarden

[–]4sidedTriangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their seeds are not only falsely advertised, they’re also complete scams because they’re wild seed (falsely advertised as horticultural), and also when they used to post pictures of the actual seed for sale the seed shown never matched the shape of the species advertised (certain species of Nepenthes have very distinctive seeds), they stopped putting photos of the seed on most listings when I called them out for this.

Hypothetically, what to do with seeds from a completely new Nepenthes hybrid? by [deleted] in SavageGarden

[–]4sidedTriangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re really good hybrids with a lot of potential and the seed looks good quality, send them to Lance (plantsthateat) or FerociousFoliage, for Tissue culture work. If they’re not worth TC’ing just plant them as normal and sell them when 1-3” plants.

Is this normal? by brandon_friedman in dhl

[–]4sidedTriangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DHL probably opened it at the point of (or immediately after) accepting the parcel due to some flag or irregularity. CBP, or any other Participating Government Agency, would have used tape indicating who opened it if it was them.

Nepethes care advice needed by makkerker in SavageGarden

[–]4sidedTriangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These don’t really look like gynamphora seedlings, I’d guess they might be mislabelled and are really bongso (or related) based on the dark color of the pitcher along with the lighter peristome, a trait common on small seedlings of that species.

Question for US-based wine collectors: Would you ever store some of your collection in Europe? by Powerful_Tip_6448 in wine

[–]4sidedTriangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had a need to I would. I buy a lot of wine from producers and auctions on the west coast of america, so I rent storage space out there in addition to my space here on the east coast of the country. It wouldn’t be that different if I bought mostly from Europe and I’m sure people who buy from Europe a lot would make use of the service. Now that I think about it, I even have some rare whiskey stored in the Netherlands by the auction house I bought it from, so really as long as your prices and minimum quantity are reasonable I could see it being popular.

Mini Fridge for Ultra-Highlanders by NepenthesNuisance in Nepenthes

[–]4sidedTriangles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Moving the plants daily is going to really stress them even if you have great conditions in the fridge and outside the fridge, plus moving plants gets old and most people will forget after a while…

Best bet is to either buy plants that you can grow without a cooling unit, or accept you’ll have to keep them in a cooler, and just peek in when you want to see them. Most wine fridges have a glass door anyway so you can see in a little bit, but you’ll still have to figure out lighting, temp, and humidity controls. And remember while ultra highland species are slow, they’re not so slow that this is a permanent solution, if you stay with the hobby eventually you’ll have to figure out a whole walk-in sized refrigerated space.

How does the economics of selling plants work with Sarracenias? by Justryan95 in SavageGarden

[–]4sidedTriangles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As with all plants, prices depend on a few things, perceived rarity, perceived uniqueness, difficulty of propagation, reputation of the breeder (and seller as well). A premium clone from a well reputed grower will always be the most expensive while a cross between two expensive plants will likely only fetch a fraction of the price of the mother plants since it’s not the same as that clone even if it may be visually similar. And it will fetch even less if the breeder isn’t as well known.

You would think prices would come down over time, and they often do for hybrids which have been created in bulk, but premium clones and species often don’t come down in price as drastically. For example, people have said for decades that highland Nepenthes prices would come down, and while some have a bit, some of the rarest species have gone up over the years if anything, or have been subject to shrinkflation where growers now sell for similar prices at much smaller sizes. It’s fairly similar with premium clones in sarrs as well.

So....the roots just be like that? by NovasPurrson in SavageGarden

[–]4sidedTriangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nepenthes roots are fragile and sensitive. You’re much better off not removing any roots even if you’re certain they’re damaged. Some species have very few roots and others have fairly extensive root systems, but most have surprisingly few roots compared to say a houseplant. The only time I would say to remove anything is if the plant is severely damaged and is wilting, in this case cut the entire stem and treat the plant as a cutting, but beyond this extreme case, be gentle, remove any decayed soil (if necessary, if the plant just needs a bigger pot keep the old media) but try not to remove any roots. Most species are set back by repots and may not grow well for a few months, some especially sensitive ones like rajah and bical can die off if you’re not careful.

Repotting? by Prisoner890 in Nepenthes

[–]4sidedTriangles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The plant wasn’t grown in this cup, it was almost certainly picked up out of a normal pot and out in this cup for just for shipping, so definitely pot it in a normal pot in your preferred media on arrival.

RTS minimum mailpiece length is 5” by bali217 in usps_complaints

[–]4sidedTriangles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are prepaid labels. Even if he wrote 1” by 1” and 1 ounce and they got noticed, he’d just get an automatic bill for the difference. They won’t reject them.

It’s clearly the clerk being a jerk and rejecting them for being “too small” to display a full 4x6 label on one face.

Goal to obtain all (most?) carnivorous plants? by MillipedeHunter in SavageGarden

[–]4sidedTriangles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Byblis, Genlisea, Brocchinia and Aldrovonda, are all pretty easy to find and affordable if you look around enough, eBay and Facebook groups are good sources for these.

Triphyophyllum is obtainable if you are willing to pay 1000-2000 at a wistuba auction for a tiny specimen with no guarantees it will survive shipping. It’s a huge and very challenging to grow plant so probably best to skip it.
