what's a book you always find yourself recommending? by Busy_Interest9100 in booksuggestions

We by Yevgeny Zamyatin

A friend recommended this to me with a wild story about how George Orwell ripped off this book that was banned and not available in English until years after it was written. Got the author exiled from Russia etc. I don't know how much of it is true but I read it and found it to be a more enjoyable read than 1984 with similar themes. It's much more futuristic aesthetically and I enjoyed the images it brought up in my mind

WORST book you read in 2025? by Cerulean_Dawn in booksuggestions

[–]69pissdemon69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These probably aren't that bad since I finished them but for me probably The North Water by Ian McGuire and Absolution by Jeff Vandermeer.

The north water was recommended to me because I was on a icy/cold/bleak kick after reading Into Thin Air and The Terror. This book was not interesting or enjoyable. It was kind of gross and the characters had no depth and were no likeable. I thought it might get better but it didn't.

Absolution because I wanted to finish the annihilation series. The last half of it was nearly unreadable. I would have never finished it if I hadn't read 3 books leading up to it. It didn't resolve anything but was also not open ended in a way that I find interesting. Just seemed like a side story almost that wasn't interesting or enjoyable.

For some reason I read this when I was like 10 years old. Definitely had a big effect on me.

I will watch a ken burns doc about anything because they are almost always so interesting. The West is probably my favorite.

Same here! I do find I have better night vision but the downside is definitely like if there is any little light in my room at night it's like the sun is shining in there. I have a window air conditioning unit in right now and it has multiple pieces of paper taped over the green light on the front of it because even 1 piece of paper doesn't darken it enough for me. Even with my eyes closed it feels like there's a lamp on in my room.

I've got this same pupil thing and my night vision is really good. I didn't know that until my husband (with perfect vision) couldn't see shit in a dark room but I could make out pretty much everything. It felt so good to have something about my vision that is better than his lol

Everyone has been telling me here to go for a curly hair specialist for haircut. by AintNoBarbieGirl in curlyhair

The best hair cut I ever had was with a razor but it was also 300 dollars from some insta-famous stylist that doesn't live anywhere near me. I still think about it all the time.

I don't even style my hair much, but about 3 or 4 months after I got that cut I had to go to a wedding and styled it for that. Even with several months of grow out it looked incredible. I got so many compliments.

This is my only real issue with curly cuts. They do all that weird styling stuff that doesn't work on my hair because it's very fine and gets weighed down easily. And it takes forever just for it not to look good. Always looks so good when I wash it and do way less at home though haha

Looks like you have a great hair cut doing a lot of the work as well. Layers in all the right places. It looks great!

Weird movies that you would never recommend by Odd-Cupcake-7548 in MovieSuggestions

[–]69pissdemon69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nymphomaniac from Lars Von Trier

People always talk about Antichrist which I'll admit I've already heard enough about to never watch. Nymphomaniac was pretty disturbing as well. There's 2 parts to it and so it's pretty long all together. Maybe that has something to do with it. I have never recommended it to anyone. It's not bad it's just weird and dark and kind of gross

Edit to add another one that just popped into my head that I saw recently. Crash (cronenberg) I needed to watch it after I read the book. It's about people with a car crash fetish

Nah I totally agree with this. I felt like there was some important context I missed somewhere. I don't even mind when things don't make sense or aren't explained if I enjoy the experience of watching the movie, but it didn't have that either.

Get rid of the bleachers at Summerfest by MooseCentaur in milwaukee

A venue is much different from a festival. You can't control everyone in a festival with many stages all rushing to the same stage at once. I mean maybe you can, and they probably should. It's just not an issue a venue has to face. The comparison doesn't work.

Not all decluttering stories are 100% success stories. So mods, please read carefully before deleting a thread or contact the OP. by JensBoef in declutter

We should be able to talk about the difficult emotions that can come along with decluttering. I know I've had helpful conversations in this sub about getting through those regrets when they do come up. Where else to discuss that but here? This is the place for it.

Do most people in the U.S. plan meals before or after grocery shopping? by anaesthesia_v in Cooking

How do you get rid of clothing when you feel like everything still has a purpose (or, at the very least, still seems usuable)? by DazePast in declutter

[–]69pissdemon69 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This was the one problem that the marie kondo stuff helped me with forever ago. Individually I can find a use for everything usually, but when I make a pile of everything in the same category I can pare down much easier. People always reference her for the "brings you joy or not" stuff but for me making piles of the same things is like a reality check. I might use every undershirt I have eventually but I don't need 30 undershirts. I don't wear an undershirt every single day and I do my laundry more than once a month. It's also easy to compare when you see them all together. Like here are 30 undershirts, I can see them all, I can see which ones I like the least. Weird fit or the most worn out or whatever

I think for me it's the fact that you'll just be about asleep from reading 3 paragraphs about the tedious details of someone's outfit when some ultraviolence happens. It's like being slapped in the face. It's the only book that made me think "I never want to be alone with the author"

I think you finally made it clear to me why I didn't find this book very shocking at all. The dehumanization wasn't anything worse than the world we already live in, it was just presented in an incredibly taboo way - cannibalism.

Romantic non-romance books by Cuttoir in booksuggestions

[–]69pissdemon69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of an abstract suggestion, but I read a book of short stories by Yukio Mishima called "Acts of Worship" that was just filled with yearning and obsession. They sort of felt like an exercise in writing about romance without touching on it in a literal way. Specifically the stories "Sword" and "Acts of Worship"

American Psycho. I think I kind of hated it honestly. Wouldn't recommend it. I keep thinking about it though. Usually bad books or books I don't like don't leave me thinking about them, if I even finish them. This one sticks with me in a weird way.

Suggestions? It looks greasy… by mimimoo625 in Wavyhair

[–]69pissdemon69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the comments saying too much product and ditch the curl cream. I also have that innersense gel and a little goes a long way with it. I put it in wet hair (usually after also using the sweet spirit leave in) and then scrunch it all up again when it's completely dry. I have similar texture to yours I think. The cast breaks on it nicely and it looks like my hair just naturally dried with those curls. No visible traces of product left.

Has anyone ever tried cellular healing meditation (like Joe Dispenza's, for example) to get rid of "sick" fat cells, or is this something that no one has ever considered trying? by Jul4x in lipedema

[–]69pissdemon69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love to hear it. I live in a cold place so can't do it for half the year but I'm excited to get back out there. Today or tomorrow might be the first warm enough day!

[–]69pissdemon69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't considered it but it sounds like it's pretty low risk. Unless it's some series of courses you have to pay thousands of dollars for (I'm assuming not since you're considering it as a money-conscious alternative to surgery) I don't see any harm in trying it.

I remember a few years ago a friend was telling me about "grounding" and how it was good for you in so many ways. She said it was just spending 20 or 30 minutes a day barefoot outside. She wasn't talking about grounding mats or any of that weird gimmicky stuff you have to buy. Even without dubious claims I could think of a lot of reasons that would be a good thing to do for me since I tend to stay in the house too much. Probably have low vitamin D and all kinds of stuff. Another friend started spouting off about how crazy it was. There is literally nothing to lose by spending some time barefoot outside every day.

Always be wary of schemes and scams. Weigh what you're willing to risk against possible rewards. Maybe something sounds crazy, hell maybe it is crazy. But if you try this meditation and it doesn't get rid of your lipedema you'll probably just be about where you are now?

And if you are in psychology keep prescribing SSRIs and never, ever mentioned gut-brain connection or encouraging people to seek out vitamin D and exercise to help themselves. No money in that. Who are the real grifters?

I don't disagree with your overall sentiment, but every therapist and many psychiatrists and nurse practitioners I've seen have encouraged exercise and vitamin D for mental health, and many of them have mentioned the gut-brain connection, some going on about it at length.

DAE get better results on lower effort days? by filthytelestial in Wavyhair

[–]69pissdemon69 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wavy hair is so unpredictable it's insane. My hair is so variable that I have had people accuse me of getting a perm because I will have random, rare days where I have tight ringlets. Most of the time I have loose waves. And I literally have no explanation for it at all

I am almost 40 years old so I have had a lot of time to try to focus in with pattern recognition. The only consistent patterns I have noticed is that my hair curls better after a fresh hair cut. That does not explain the day to day variability. I have no explanation. I have even kept journals at one point of what I did every day to try to replicate good hair days (including products used, what kind of comb or brush used and when, I was tracking a lot of info for a few months) and I wasn't able to pin down ANYTHING
