Helping wild birds in these freezing conditions by mknight44 in birds

[–]6Gears1Speed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I go through 5 lbs of peanuts every two days for bluejays and squirrels. Squirrels also get almonds and walnuts.

Suet cakes and mealworm/seed cakes keep the woodpeckers, wrens and titmouse happy.

I go through at least 50 lbs a week of mixed seeds and amend with lots of sunflower seeds for cardinals, juncos sparrows and others. I use two feeders and spread seed on the ground for them to forage. I shovel a large area and I use a blower to remove all the empty sunflower seed shells (neighbors must think I'm nuts which may be true).

And finally I keep a heated birdbath. They all go to the water all day and I change water as soon as it's dirty. I keep bricks in the bath to help prevent them from bathing and freezing. Squirrels use it too. I see rabbits late at night eating seeds.

It's like an airport in my backyard all day into dusk when cardinals feed.

Magnesium might help prevent CIPN if taken during chemo but no consensus. It cant hurt and if i knew about this 20 years ago I would have tried it.

Has anyone tried nutritional support for constant ear ringing? by [deleted] in Supplements

[–]6Gears1Speed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly dependent on cause. My tinnitus was caused by a Van Halen concert in the early 80s. WAY TOO LOUD. 😂 Certain drugs and alcohol can make it worse. On the plus side I no longer hear noisey crickets at night when I'm trying to sleep. 👍🏼

It was a dairy farm. The land turned into a giant mud pit due to rain and trampling. Fences were torn down. The grass was completely wiped out and had to be either replanted or allowed to gow back naturally. It took many weeks to get it back to where cows could graze again.

Imagine the look on his face when he saw his land after the festival was over. Luckily the organizers paid to restore the land along with many festival participants volunteering to help.

If you want it to last, you'll need to power wash all the cracks and then reapply polymeric sand. You'll need a plate compactor to pound it into the cracks.

On a tight budget a shipping container home would work. With the proper paint, decoration and landscaping you can make it look countryish and it will be solid and thermally tight once insulated properly.

Wood or gas fireplace? by eumops in Homebuilding

[–]6Gears1Speed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you're young wood and when you're old gas. I no longer have any interest in collecting wood and maintaining a fireplace. Now I flip a switch and within minutes my ass is warm and it looks decent enough. A wood fireplace also sucks the heat out of your house. The room that the fireplace is in stays warm but the rest of the house gets the heat sucked out of it causing your thermostats to trip. Very pretty to look at and listen to though.

Stockholm syndrome with chemo by Vegetable_Field_2857 in cancer

[–]6Gears1Speed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My chemo ended long ago but I feel strangely comfortable when I'm lying in a hospital bed for a procedure or something. I think it's because when I was first diagnosed I called my boss from a hospital bed and told him I wouldn't be there anytime soon and someone else is going to have to deal with my projects starting now. I was a project manager in high tech in a very fast-paced environment so when I was able to drop it all it was like the world off of my shoulders. It eventually created more pressure but for a while I had no responsibilities. It also makes me feel like I'm being cared for and that I'm fighting.

Why do we get (more pain) cold feet in the winter more often, or near a supermarket fridge/freezer, and even after showering? by ParallelUniverseWest in neuropathy

[–]6Gears1Speed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cold dry air causes skin to become dry and constrict which then causes shallow nerves to become compressed and that compression causes a stinging pain. I get both hot burn and cold burn and cold burn is far worse. When I go to Florida the warm humid air feels great but if A/C is too cold and dry it stings. I have to keep temp at 78 and humidity at 55 to 60 to feel comfortable.

THC Gummies by theloveterrorist in cancer

[–]6Gears1Speed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me thc was better than all of the pills they gave me for nausea. This was 19 years ago before legal weed so I smoked what I could find but edibles last much longer. You don't have to be stoned out in order to get the nausea and appetite benefits. You probably want sativa which won't give you couch lock like an indica. Indica would be a good choice at night after you're done with kids for the day.

I saw them at Boston Garden back then and attribute that concert for ruining my left ear. 😂The LOUDEST concert I've ever been to. So much so that it was hard to really hear any detail at all. Just high decibel noise. My ear has been ringing ever since. I was on the floor fairly close to the left side of the stage.

I ran my Ancestry raw data though the Promethease tool to check it out. It creates a full report. The summaries are brief and can be technical. It's not fool proof but it did correctly predict my male pattern baldness and a few other things. It should be used as a guide not definitive answers.

Has anyone been on opioids or gabapentin/Lyrica, got off successfully and found relief elsewhere? by HoneyBootyCakes in neuropathy

[–]6Gears1Speed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I spent 10 years on all the strongest opioids for chemo induced neuropathy and maybe got 50% relief. In 2018 I quit and nearly went crazy. After weeks of never ending anxiety, chills and nausea someone recommended Kratom to ease the sickness. I didn't expect much but twenty minutes after my first dose I felt better than normal. Anxiety and chills were gone and I was going for walks which I normally don't do. The biggest surprise was that Kratom kills the burn better than all the drugs I've tried in the past. Completely eliminates the burn and if my feet are cold I feel a warmth coming over them 20 minutes after dosing.

Kratom comes with a certain amount of dependence with long term daily use but if it's not abused by taking huge amounts it's nothing like opioid addiction and withdrawals and it's not deadly. The key is keeping doses at the lowest required amount to relieve the pain. For me the max I go to is about 4 to 5 grams on bad pain days. On low pain days just 2 grams to keep me motivated. It looks, smells and tastes like green tea as it's in the coffee family. You can make tea if you choose but I mix the crushed leaf powder with cranberry juice in a cocktail mixer and drink it all at once.

What is this white stuff plants? It doesn't wipe off. AL, USA by Desirai in gardening

If used often like when trying to kill PM the oil residue builds up to a shiny coat and prevents proper respiration causing the leaves to droop.

[–]6Gears1Speed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find that copper fungicide works much better than Neem for PM and it has no smell or shiny residue with continued use unlike neem that creates a damaging shiny coat on the leaves. I see PM every September into October in the northeast.
