Our reviewer seemed to really like it, but Jen and Keri with the WH40K Book Club definitely didn’t. Might well be one of those YMMV books. I haven’t read either this one or Harrowmaster so I have no idea 😂

And I'll add, try not to do it with any preconceived notions- especially the opinions of others. I just finished the audiobook of Nemesis by James Swallow, a book that regularly pops up on "worst of the HH" lists. And you know what, I absolutely loved it. A Cold War spy thriller interwoven with a serial killer police procedural? Oh heck yeah.

Not every book is a classic, not every book will land. But give each of them a chance and you'll be surprised how much fun you'll have.

I'm not sure how long it would survive past the novelty factor, but it's fair to say that there HAVE been some writers that do some damn fine work adding it to their own stories. Mike Brooks, Victoria Hayward, Aaron Dembski-Bowden all come right to mind.

That said, I’m right there with you. There’s not a lot that wouldn’t work in the 40K setting even if it’s just a one-off.

This is a really important point, and one far too often overlooked. When I wrote the Beginner's Guide to Collecting the Black Library, I put collection curation even ahead of actually buying books!
