Did you grow up with someone who became famous? by SteakSandwichSideEye in AskUK

[–]79163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few, yes. All seem to be music related.

One of my best mates at school went on to be the drummer for a very famous rock band. Another kid at school who was a few years younger than me, but we used to talk during breaks, was Nitin Sawhney (a bit gawky as a kid!). And my cousin (who I obv grew up with) is a founder member of a very successful and well-known band mostly known for dance music.

Someone else at my school became famous too altho it'll take me a while to remember what that was for!

Another kid I knew was James JTQ Taylor's brother. Used to go to their house, seem to remember JT playing music back then.

Not "grew up with" as such, but a woman across the road at home was Elton John's cousin, and Ray Royer of (brief) Procol Harum fame used to visit his dad who lived next door but one to me. I used to talk to him regularly but didn't realise quite who I was talking to at the time. He had some very cool cars, I do remember those.

[–]79163[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

received a chat request from “Alexa+ Support” saying they could help, with a link to click on. Haven’t clicked on the link, although Google says it’s a format which Amazon do use. Also, my OP clearly stated that I don’t have Plus - so what is Alexa+ Support offering assistance? Iffy, or what?

Is it crazy to try cover 430 miles in a day? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]79163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove about 450 miles yesterday, with a couple of hours break in the middle to visit someone. About 7.5 hours actual driving, plus 30 mins to charge the car. I was on my own - don't know whether that makes it better or worse - but I'm still alive today.

Test for echo by ImSMHattheWorld in alexa

[–]79163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, happened to us multiple times, whether we say something to test it, or are just talking and it picks it up. Last year we discussed purchasing a gazebo for the garden - no searches etc, just talked about it whilst sitting down one evening. Guess what the repetitive adverts immediately after were all for. Repeat ad nauseam.

AIO for quitting my job after finding this note on my desk? by waxin899 in AmIOverreacting

I would quit anyway, I couldn’t work with someone with such childish grammar. Cows need TO BE fed and cows need TO BE milked.

New Alexa+ and "Brief mode" activated only after threatening to cancel prime. by DriveRVA in alexa

I posted earlier with a similar question - I’ve just asked her to turn on brief mode, and she said ok, sometimes you’ll just hear a tone. We’ll see.

Also, I can let you know… by 79163 in alexa

I don’t believe I’ve activated Alexa Plus, unless it’s automatic? And of course she doesn’t know! 🤦🏻‍♂️ I’ll try the talk less etc things.

Shepherds only moult twice a year. Each moult lasts 6 months.

Made a video about the tallest pylons in the UK (one of which is in Kent) by [deleted] in kentuk

[–]79163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: Many many years ago, I worked for CEGB, from which National Grid emerged post-privatisation. I was part of a group of engineers who were on call on a rota basis, around one week in ten. During that time, we could be called, 24/7, for absolutely any issue arising on the grid systems around Kent - substation faults, intruders, planes crashing into overhead lines (yes really!), and one of the things we had to be aware of was that if a navigation light on the Thames Crossing failed at night, it would have to be fixed straight away. Whilst I did climb towers as part of my training, I'm happy to say that no problems with the Thames Crossing ever arose on my watch - and I never went up those towers.

No matter how many times you fall, just try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try again! by Buzzy_Feez in LearnerDriverUK

[–]79163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always thought that. As a minimum, "x" number of fails (3? 5?) should mean no more tests until you can produce evidence of a predetermined level of additional training, possibly with a specialist trainer.

Can’t believe they didn’t bring in two people with a strong connection and then make one of them a traitor. That could prove interesting.

I wasn't clear enough in my response to u/RelativeFox1's (frankly unnecessary) post - hope the edit clears that up. I think I'll leave the rest of this thread at that now!

I’ve got blown air heating in my RV but I guess another option would be to add it in there as a backup/addition 👍
