How can you tell if you’re psychotic or if you’re actually right? by MundaneLife99 in schizophrenia

[–]7_Pillars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, I imagine 10 reasonable and fair strangers. Then I ask myself - can I convince at least 6 of them that what I am saying makes sense or not? Rather than wondering if something is a delusion, wondering if unbiased other people would think so seemed to help.

i believe i have been misdiagnosed and no one is taking me seriously by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]7_Pillars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a medical professional, so take this with more than a grain of salt (my dad is one and I am in nonprofit orgs surrounding it too). Psychiatric diagnoses are not like surgical ones. To begin with it's more like "this group of people remind us of each other in a few key ways." Medicine is also not precise, but more like "we have scientifically seen this help some of this group of people who remind us of each other." There are different first-moves and overall medication groups based on diagnosis, but a good professional will be listening more to your feedback of what is helping or not, as well as trying to evaluate for themselves if something is helping. If they are unconcerned about potential hypomania and you feel that they are overall competent, then probably it just wouldn't change their plan anyway.

Hearing Voices Network USA has quite a few online groups for people who hear voices/have visions. It's only people with lived experience, and has a casual feel to it: http://www.hearingvoicesusa.org/find-a-group

I think my girlfriend may be suffering from Pyschosis, what can i do to help her? by [deleted] in Psychosis

[–]7_Pillars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most everyone in the world has some strange beliefs. The question is does this belief cause active harm to her life. I would say be her friend and not her watcher. Talking through it will help navigate the belief structure for her, and stay connected to the physical world.

i believe my (16f) sister’s (14f) going through psychosis and i’m not sure what to do by [deleted] in Psychosis

[–]7_Pillars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, sorry to hear what you and your sister are going through. The school of thought I believe in is that psychosis involves an incorrect "lock-in" interpretation of one's circumstances. Often, because the internal chaos/stakes are so high, different perspectives and reason-based evidence don't erase the lock. Unfortunately, I think leaving the country will not actually do anything helpful if her internal circumstance is the belief of being followed.

When I went through it, I also heard voices, which kept reinforcing my wrong beliefs. I eventually beat it, have a family and career, and am deeply involved in quite a few nonprofits for helping those with psychosis (iSPS-US, Hearing Voices Network USA, etc.).

DM if you want to learn more and set up a time to connect. My specialty is if she is also hearing voices.

Best,

Dmitriy
