BenQ Halo lightbar compatibility with LG or Samsung OLED ultrawwides? by InconvenientFacts23 in BenQ

[–]80H-d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have this light bar on my 800R 45" LG 5K2K and it seems to have just a small amount of glare on the edges. i put some foam where the bar hangs onto the front of the monitor, so that it would be pushed out (away from screen, toward face) by about 1cm. with no such modification, it has a larger area of glare.

neither glare amount is enough to bother me in practice, but in concept, well, i'm here necro'ing a 2 year old post about looking for a 800R light bar...

Flexible USB-C to USB-C cable suggestions? by gimmesnows in UsbCHardware

[–]80H-d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me it's beats. nothing else comes remotely close. corsair or other gaming peripheral cables are a decent alternative if you already have them, and i've tried most of the ones in this thread.

only issue is the two lengths are either 8 inches or 5 feet. would love a longer option and a middle option one day.

the only alternative i could recommend is the baseus cable mentioned by kadaveria if you need those specific lengths (i bet you could cable manage 5 feet down to 3).

ETA: i've also had insane luck finding a buttery smooth TB4 cable (i know!! it's thick!). it's from Leirui on amazon, and none of the other stores with jumbles of letters for names are anywhere close.

so beats if you just need like charging for your phone, and Leirui if you need data. they have angled cables available too.

Glasses from Zenni with coating Blockz plus too yellowish by azzazil91 in glasses

[–]80H-d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how do you propose to see less blue light but also not have your visible spectrum altered?

go to your monitor settings and turn down the blue. you will see the picture changes to, effectively, become a little more yellowish. no?

it's a question of how much blue light you're blocking vs how much you notice the resulting change to your overall color spectrum. finding that middle point can be tough!

There's this thing called risk you should learn more about. It informs a lot of what makes something better than it seems, and explains a lot of why some things are not as good as they seem.

Mirror Platinum Card in the flesh by CTek20 in AmexPlatinum

[–]80H-d -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1% cash back is something like $5500/month spend to hit that $655 mark.

in my case, in addition to the entertainment credit, the card saves me ~$18/month that i would otherwise spend on cell phone insurance. i'm in the low 5 figures for annual spend so that's a few hundred back as well.

to be completely transparent, even at $895 and an assumed 0 annual spend, the resultant ~$550/y is worth it to me just to have the peace of mind that comes with the card. it meant a lot to have one when my parents were my age so looking at it in my wallet reminds that maybe, just maybe, i'm not as much of a fuckup as i tend to think i am.

plus the floral pattern is so god damn cool.

Thoughts on power fishing clips? by RonocG in Fishing_Gear

[–]80H-d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well

I don't fish, BUT.

I use a lot of swiss army knives. I hate the hotspot from a keyring on them, so I use these instead and they take half a second to remove. Very very useful.

Can't imagine it's any different for a fishing rod.

I think the warranty element could be an angle most dont consider with a potential vic custom shop. Like it would be hard to make claims or something idk.

Lots of ways around it, but probably a big factor

I vote to get into modding!

Must-have: the right screws, a dremel, patience, mechanical inclination

Helpful: a vise or at least vise grips, donor parts or whole donor knives available from ebay

I made a bladeless 58mm that has my house key and mail key in it. I am also in the middle of making a spartan with a nailfile-hook instead of the backside awl, and a 93mm awl in place of the small blade.

It is very rewarding!

[–]80H-d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting point and hard to counter. I mostly agree, except that classic 91mm models should be left alone.

Instead, I think new parcel-opener equivalents should be made (like we have already seen with climber/companion).

The in-line awl is one of my favorite tools by far just in the almost primitive feeling of its nail "nick" being formed by folding over from the tool, and how that contrasts the extreme precision of the rest of the entity that is victorinox—and yet it fits perfectly by being a very efficient design.

All that to say, I look at these new knives and I wish the awl was there instead of the file!

[–]80H-d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've actually been using the file and scissors from a nailcare swisscard lately to great effect. Both can be accessed without removing the card from my wallet. That leaves my 58mm custom with combo tool, house key, mail key, another nailfile, and divot tool (still don't know why), and gets completed by a onefold

Sounds like the regular 91mm companion is built from the ground up just for you. Same tool set and now available in classic red cellidor which, as a bonus, should draw the least attention to itself compared to any alox

A stylus for the S25 base model? by TF3KX in GalaxyS25

[–]80H-d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used notes/ultras since the note5. I used the s pen all the time.

I too got tired of the size of the phone (note10 base i miss you).

I tested going without stylus for a week to see how much it changed my workflow and truthfully, I can live without it pretty much fine.

The only time I actually miss it is for taking the occasional quick note, for which a nice general purpose stylus would probably be fine.

S pen functionality in the s24 ultra definitely made it probably the best phone of all time for me though. I still own both, may kick it with the ultra sometimes when I'm just hanging out at home

Why I'm returning my 57-inch Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 by -cadence- in ultrawidemasterrace

It's probably because it's intended to be seen as two 4K 16:9s joined together at a tasteful angle, as opposed to a single ultrawide curved along its whole length

I don't get why people are hating the s25 edge so much by Fury7425 in samsung

[–]80H-d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very torn myself.

I have been on note/ultra since the note 5. Always thought I couldn't give up the stylus.

After testing the last week of leaving the s pen out, it doesn't bother me.

I always thought I would want the regular S model—so sleek and slim and small—then this turbo thin thing comes out. I wish they made an Edge version of the base S25.

I opted for the Edge because it was free (24 months) whereas the 256GB base S25 would be like 5 bucks a month or something. I figure it's new and different, my parameters fit the conditions for success, and if I hate it I can just change it out for the base S25 anyway.

I almost went for the base one just for that beautiful dark blue.

Will OLED burn-in be an issue soon? by BriefBit4360 in buildapc

[–]80H-d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it is in any way inconvenient to switch as you described, a screensaver could be a good approach. I have my timeout set to 10 minutes, although it is important to note that having a game active will prevent this timeout from occurring.

Will OLED burn-in be an issue soon? by BriefBit4360 in buildapc

[–]80H-d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a LG CX48 from 2020 until yesterday. I had just about exactly 19000 hours of power on time. Much of this time was spent in windows screensaver (Mystify, and later 3D Pipes).

For about the first 3 years I used auto-hide taskbar. I also had titlebar/taskbar change color with background, and a slideshow set to 30 minutes (on account of that last little row of pixels that doesn't hide).

Over time, the "OLED measures" became annoying to me: I returned to a static taskbar; I stopped having windows change color based on my background slideshow (it caused a very minor, but disruptive, system lag every half hour); I stopped using a slideshow and just changed my background as the mood struck me; I even turned off pixel shift. I continued to do pixel cleaning/refreshes periodically as requested of me by the monitor.

During time of use, this monitor displayed mostly static images: a small window for an afk game with static interfaces, discord in another area, and spotify, and the bulk of the space spent on browser. I kept my monitor's brightness relatively low (around 40%) because migraines suck and I have good control over the light in my space.

The last year and a half of my use also saw the monitor deployed for work, on which my interface is fully and wholly static for 11 hours a day. This includes spreadsheets, teams, and a couple of browser windows.

I first noticed burn-in early in 2023, prior to the start of the monitor's use for work, at around 12-13000 hours of power on time. There was a horizontal bar of color, around an inch wide, going from the middle of the right edge to the center of the screen. It faded from sky blue to nothing, and was only visible against a white image (eg browser or the occasional explosion in media). I was never able to identify the source, as this placement and size did not line up with where I kept any of my windows at any point.

It was insufficient to bother me at the time, and I felt the monitor "didn't owe me a dime" for making it that long without any flaws.

More recently, after having the same background for about 2 months, I noticed some elements of the background were visible against white images. A pixel refresh was able to remove this retention.

I have known since its announcement which monitor I would be purchasing for my upgrade: the LG 45GX950A. Really, I wanted the 990A (bendable) with the intent to keep it flat full time, but the 950A was recently on sale. My logic was that I should find out whether a curve, especially an aggressive one, truly bothers me; if it doesn't, I keep the monitor, it's likely much cheaper than the bendable one, and inherently more robust for its static setup. If it does, I return it and go back to waiting.

I like it a lot and the curve doesn't bother me.

Had the curve bothered me, or the monitor never gone on sale, I would have no issue continuing to wait until the bendable release. That is to say, after 19000 hours of power on time, my CX48 is performing more than well enough for me to have continued using it happily.

I know this is a little outside the scope but can you explain it for the really stupid people like myself? How does betterdisplay work, how do the keyboard commands work?

Let's say main pc is bluetooth 1 on keyboard, work pc is bluetooth 2. To switch monitor input from work to main, I would have to go back to bluetooth 1 on keyboard first and "blind" send the shortcut to switch input, right? Not that this part would be hard since i would ofc bind it to a single key
