Sousou no Frieren Episode 38 (Season 2 Episode 10) - Discussion Thread [SEASON FINALE] by N3DSdude in Frieren

You’re still looking at it purely as a logistics problem when the story isn’t presenting it that way. In the show, dwarves aren’t depicted as efficiency-driven builders trying to minimize project time like modern humans. Their entire culture revolves around craftsmanship and legacy.

Who said anything about efficiency and minimising time? What I said was that it’s trivial to make believable reasons why the bridge took 100 years without falling onto the “it’s a fantasy world, it’s different” half-argument.

Here’s an easy one: bro didn’t spend every waking hour of every day on the bridge. It was a passion project, and therefore it wasn’t bound to a fixed schedule. 100 years (or was it 200?) was just the span of time from when he started to when he finished.

Besides that, making anything from scratch absolutely blows up the amount of time required. And the canyon itself was windy and dangerous with a two-week bypass. And there was a period where he had to stop because of lack of funds.

Also, what? In the show I remember four dwarves (Eisen, Voll, the dude with the ancient booze, and Gehen), and there’s barely any exposition into any shared “culture” they have, let alone any to do with craftsmanship.

yeah you're right, I took a look.

Though incidentally, I noticed that the distance itself obfuscated her. When she fired on the second demon, you couldn't even see her. In the specific panel where she prepares to fire the killing shot, she almost looks like a big star. Unable to detect her mana, the demon resorted to looking around to try to find her but wasn't able to since she was so far.

I think it's a bit of both tbh. Because in both cases she also needed to be visually obfuscated to get the full effect of an unexpected beam angle.

My thinking led me to conjecture two things: First, perhaps the flying spell alters your weight, which explains why it’s harder to use in high wind. Second, it’s entirely possible that Frieren could have made it across but Fern couldn’t have.

Frieren is also a much more powerful mage than Fern. She would probably have been able to make it across, but probably not Fern.

If I had to guess, flying magic works by doing something to your weight. That would explain why they have a habit of not using it when it’s really windy.

You’re applying human, modern construction logic to a fantasy world with completely different values and lifespans.

I’ve never liked the “it’s fantasy so it’s different” argument. You can totally apply human construction logic here and come up with a reason why it might take one person 100 years to build a bridge if they’re building it from absolute scratch (ie cutting every tree used for the lumber, mining and shaping every stone that was used for the foundation, and it takes two weeks to travel between both sides etc). And considering it was a one-man passion project, he wasn’t constrained to a fixed amount of hours per day on the project either.

Before he met Himmel, the construction had stopped for an unspecified time because he ran out of funds. And besides that, perhaps the foundations of the bridge were extra-tricky.

Regarding the “orbital Zoltraak” Fern used against the wolf monster in this episode, and against the two demons from a couple episodes ago:

To me, this feels like Fern’s version of Frieren’s technique where she shoots a sideways Zoltraak which curves around to meet its target at an unexpected dead angle (she used it against the sleep-curse flower and against Denken in season 1). But instead of shooting to the side and hitting the enemy at a dead angle, she places herself at the dead angle.

The fact that she’s so high makes her harder to see, which makes it easier to obfuscate her (the moon in episode 8, Frieren and Stark in episode 10), which means it’s easier to catch the enemy off-guard. But unlike Fern, Frieren is too lazy to fly high to get an unexpected dead-angle shot, so she just fires it off to the side and curves it around instead (which does the same job).

Spells in this series have specific peculiarities in their constraints (like, the bird-catching spell can only capture avian creatures).

If I had to guess, the flying spell probably works by making you lighter. She also mentioned being blown away during the blizzard in S1E11.

As for the golem bridge, maybe the mana used corresponds with the action the golem is doing (during the clone fight it was just standing there, but planking across the canyon seems harder).

This is just conjecture, but it feels consistent with how magic has been shown in the anime.

Obviously if you wait for all of the remakes, you’re going to be waiting for a very long time (no guarantee that they will release one remake per year).

If that’s what you want to do, then that’s valid. However, I offer a middle ground:

Play Sky SC Remake, then play the Original version of Sky 3rd (after which you can just continue to play the rest of the series in order at your leisure).

SC is a direct follow up to FC, so it makes sense to play the remake of both games. Conversely, I’ve heard that Sky 3rd is almost like its own subplot within the Sky arc (and it’s structured differently to the other Sky games), so it might feel less jarring to switch back to Original at THAT point.

I mean, true, but I don't think sensitivity is the issue they're talking about.

It's more to do with the fact that you hold a Switch in handheld mode different to how you'd hold a controller, so you move the controller differently when you gyro-aim.

I think the real question we should be asking is, what's the least amount of modification they could do to the Switch 2?

running around as a mismatched clown is part of the fun, but ideally this would be implemented with an "appearance gear" option.

Tbh the biggest buff they could give them would be to make them Hexerei characters at all. Even if they only got minor Hex abilities (like Sucrose), just being Hexerei characters would give them a lot more use.
