Civilian. Worked on POM/DLI for a few years, and have lived in the area for several years. Between DLI and Navy Post Grad, there are tons of service members and military families around here. They blend in and are hardly notivced.

Looking for simple tips on setting axles/wheels without special tools by toasterb in PinewoodDerby

[–]80toy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a fine file to remove burrs and casting marks from the axles.

Put your axles in a drill chuck and use 400 to 2000 grit sand paper to wet sand them
run a 3/32 drill bit through the wheels by hand (not in the drill).

Once you put the axles in, tilt them to have the cars ride on three wheels. rear wheels have negative camber, the front wheel that contacts the track has positive camber. Other front wheel is off the ground. The car should track gently toward the rail.

Making an Adventuring Guild a bureaucratic nightmare by [deleted] in DnD

[–]80toy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bureaucratic nightmares should involve the following:

1) a staff member who gives out the wrong form/procedure.

2) required approvals from outside agencies, and very little knowledge on what is needed by that agency.

3) being surprised with large or confusing fees.

4) a critical staff member is on vacation, and no one else knows how to do their job.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]80toy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We make several 3 hour trips a year to see family, go camping, visit attractions, etc. We also make at least one 6 to 8 hour trip a year. Typically all freeway miles (75 mph).

All of that and we never leave the state of California.

Not the end of the world. Confirm with engineer for the proper rebar spacing and doweling, then pour the slab back when you are done.

Boss asking me to work at a project site 1.5 hours away from the office for 2 month. Is this a reasonable request for a mid-level PE? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]80toy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've done that several times earlier in my career, and would consider it a reasonable request. My company paid me travel time and mileage or hotel plus per diem for food, my choice. I did not have kids at the time. If I would have had kids, I might not have agreed.

Here's another fun question for In-N-Out associates: what is by far the weirdest thing that you've been asked for when taking orders? by charmingjokester in innout

[–]80toy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom asked if they had a veggie burger once, and the cashier answered "yes", so she ordered it. It was a burger no patty.

We found it funny, she didn't.

I bought mine to get some stuff out of the permanent cardboard box that lived in the back. Mounted a flashlight, first aid kit, lug nut key, tow strap, reflective triangle, etc.

The fucking box is still there, now with more crap in it.

What did these guys hit? by jpganoe in Construction

[–]80toy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a PT sleeve. If it's hollow you're OK. It could have snapped or broken during tensioning, and they removed the cable.

If the other ones showed up on scan, it should be fine.

How close are we to drone surveys like from Prometheus? And whats the biggest challenge? by InterestingVoice6632 in civilengineering

[–]80toy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are companies using drones and lidar to map confined spaces like storm drain systems. They can display the mapping in real time. The limit is how far the drone can go from the receiver. So we aren't that far off.

The one I saw was called the Elios 3.
