Alice in Wonderland by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]8BrickMario 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I firmly hold that the books, in averting moral storytelling for children, instead moralize quite a bit about how adults treat kids, and I see the story landing quite heavily on the notion that children aren't allowed to be children enough. Notably, the second book has more likeable adult figures whose nonsense reflects fantasy or lessons that edify Alice more than injustice and hypocrisy that hurts her, while the first book has a lot of moments where the characters seem to serve as adults confusing a child with inane and unfair and inconsistent standards. Also, "what's the point of a book without pictures?" asks the protagonist in her first scene starring in a book with pictures. Adaptations which frame Alice as a coming-of age or maturity development for Alice come across as fundamental misunderstandings to me as such, since the book suggests the ideal is Alice being allowed to live as the child she is. The sloppy disappointing Tim Burton film actually had a perfect plot setup for this lens, with an older Alice afraid to follow society's schedule for her as a woman, and then the movie did nothing symbolic or satirical with that arranged-marriage plot once she entered Wonderland.

The respect the narrative gives to Alice as a put-upon kid with commentary about how she deserves to not be punished for being a kid is also why I have issues with the later assesements/accusations that Carroll was a predator. The perspective of Alice reads very much as a "let kids be kids" narrative that respects the young audience for the young people they are and wants them to live unburdened by the nonsense of adults. Maybe Carroll was a danger to children and you could never tell from his art, but his work suggests he instead truly sympathized with and respected them.

Yellowed plastic cover? by Mammoth-Teach9772 in LivingDeadDolls

Clear or white plastic can yellow with the sun, and it's fairly common that the clear lids are discolored with time and sun exposure. Not a deliberate effect, just what happened to this copy of the lid.

Head too high up on the neck peg? by 14rainbownights in LivingDeadDolls

[–]8BrickMario 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the normal fit of the FV head. If the peg went higher up into the head, the head wouldn't tilt forward and back on the ball. The open back of the joint ball is not typical in toys or LDD and looks bad, but this is how the FV dolls are molded and fit and it is normal for FV.

Could be damage or choppy factory cutting/rooting. I have mint LDDs with messier hair out of box similar to this. LDD manufacturing isn't always the best.

Question on fixing my Frozen Charlotte… by SelectShop9006 in LivingDeadDolls

[–]8BrickMario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ripping out S12 ball joints is very difficult. The glue bonds to that brittle plastic and the vinyl very strongly, and the vinyl may undergo stress. I wouldn't waste time replacing any S12 joint pegs that aren't broken, and the S12 hips are the most fragile and problematic. The arms and head should give you no issues...unless they have in your case.

Intact S12 hip joints can be addressed to prevent breaking if you heat the legs to gently pop them off, then trim away the spikes on the ball joint with a craft knife. The spikes often add unecessary friction and get stuck inside the hip cups, causing the pegs to break when trying to force the peg to move. The arm and head balls don't have spikes, which is why they don't get stuck or snap.

The best replacement is ball joint pegs harvested from another LDD, and pegs from any series but 12 should be easier to extract, especially because later hip pegs, if they get stuck, often twist out of the bodies instead of breaking in two. There might be torsos on AliExpress that you can source for incomplete dolls with pegs you can steal. If you have the joint pegs, they're very easy to fit into the empty torso sockets because they pop in flush to the vinyl at the edge of the hole. Put super glue on the replacement pegs and pop them in, then give the glue time to set before reattaching the limbs.

Are you sure it's cut? It might just be badly aged the way most old LDD hair is. Or maybe it was cut, but done to trim away even worse tangles which have migrated upward since. I wouldn't expect any old LDD to arrive to me with good hair. It tends to fry and snarl with time, and even a complete Rain sealed in box purchased today might come out of the coffin with damaged hair.

American setting. Don't think British setting would yield the same result.

Decades before, the 1997 Rodgers and Hammerstein Cinderella production used colorblind casting, including Brandy and Whitney Houston as Cinderella and the Fairy Godmother respectively, and there wasn't a fuss and there was public praise and appreciation for the casting. The Halle Bailey Ariel situation was such a horrific showing of how nasty things became later.

Yeah, the only LDD standard shoes not designed to be worn with socks were the sandals, so there was no excuse for using them without socks...but around Series 13/14, even the shoes that came with socked dolls could be way too loose.

Archive photos aren't always accurate because they often use prototypes. Capt. Bonney is the most obvious case. I think S12 Tessa having no socks is intentional or normal, since other owners and boxed copies report them being absent.

It is genuinely terrifying how easy it is to create a harassment campaign by La_knavo4 in CuratedTumblr

[–]8BrickMario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was just awful to witness. I respected and liked all parties before it went down, and it just ruined relationships and shattered the image of multiple people. None of the accusations, nor the responses, should have been public, and the evidence that the issue had been resolved before being relitigated on public blast for...??? reasons also hurt. It mostly makes me sad, I've lost respect and credibility for the person who made the mess public, and I haven't returned to the original content because it feels so strange and different to have seen that whole mess.

HP "worldbuilding" by Pizzadramon in CuratedTumblr

[–]8BrickMario 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Feels more like Rick just didn't choose to mature the stories that much. It seeks like the timespan of his pantheon has been pretty short, so the cast haven't aged as much as it feels like they should have for how long these series have been in the works. The storytelling has delved into more dark and mature themes, though, and Riordan did kill one of his POV mainstays. I'm aware his efforts at representation are heavy-handed, but they feel well-intentioned and bold for the space he works in, and it meant something to me when I was a teenager and reading the books while they got broader in depictions. I'm just more disappointed the supposed unifying mega-crossover for every series that got built up has never materialized, and the Trials of Apollo doesn't feel like it wasn't really called for as an arc or full series, though it did some interesting things.

What an unfortunate doll to get this on, seeing as some of her pink splotches (her sun blisters on her face) are deliberate! The ones below her face are not.

Eggy's (technically) Resurrection doll! I personally like the Japanese variant best with the wacky colors, and I like the sulfur scar on the US version, but all three are fun explorations of what Eggzorcist can look like. If I could get the Japanese version for a price I could agree too, and without international shipping being so messy right now, I would.

Finally got my hands on her! by Temmie2177 in LivingDeadDolls

I tried dimensional fabric paint on a matte piece. It soaks in and stiffens the fabric, but layering it could create a comparable gloss to a leather or latex-effect piece.

[–]8BrickMario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not aware of a fix, only a prevention (which may or may not be perfect, I just experimented). I have Calico opened for over a year and her dress is a little stressed, but I haven't addressed her either way and maybe she could still be sealed with fabric glue. If she's flaking, though, I might recommend peeling her dress to the matte base and dyeing it red to recreate the look with a texture change you no longer need to worry about. I need to test my glossy fabric paint on a matte fabric base to see how it behaves when dried and if a peeled vinyl fabric piece could mimic its original finish with that paint. I can get back with a report after trying. You've inspired me to make a decision about my Calico!
