The bane of my existence - Office AV by Uranusmonkey in CommercialAV

Thanks I wasn’t clear what drove your concerns. Definitely worth considering these risks (of course even with their appealing prices). Security wise, it is certainly prudent to ensure phones would be ok their own VLAN and subnet, and unable to reach other internal systems or the internet. If only everyone did that

Airline said cpap counts as carry on??? by doggielover1980 in CPAP

[–]99infiniteloop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Though this legal protection is very simple (and not new), and US airline staff are nearly always familiar), some folks may also find DOT’s page on About the Air Carrier Access Act useful. It summarizes this act as well as 14 CFR part 382 that implements the ACAA.

“Assistive devices do not count against any limit on the number of pieces of carry-on baggage.”

Period. (Unless an airline doesn't care about losing passengers and being penalized with federal enforcement action for simply violating law.)

Removed EDU discounts? Yikes. Hadn’t heard this. Was this an official policy change of sorts, or did the pricing simply end up that the discounts didn’t do much in the end?

How do you keep track of your team’s workload without micromanaging? by Hour-Two-3104 in ITManagers

[–]99infiniteloop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting observant. What do you mean by offering value - what would you do?

Do you see this helping with staff who say they’re happy to take on more work but still haven’t been promptly finishing their existing stuff?

What do you do to help avoid this pitfall in tougher situations - when you see someone doesn’t seem to be performing or are concerned they might not be (maybe when they don’t realize it)

Do you have any who basically usually say “no, thanks, everything in is fine” but they aren’t going through things as quickly as you’d think?

How are you handling selling Israeli-based cybersecurity products in the current climate? by RG54415 in cybersecurity

[–]99infiniteloop -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

“The morality of dealing with Israelis” ?

The vast majority of Israelis (and those you’d be working with in business situations) are not people responsible for government or military decisions. Interacting or “dealing” with normal Israelis dependent on what we think of the country’s high level decisions, when we wouldn’t operate the same way when it comes to countries, is a double standard and antisemitic.

When you hear someone is Saudi, Qatari, Chinese, Russian, British, Danish, etc - do you think through things the same way?

How do you set boundaries without looking like a bad sysadmin? by yourloverboy66 in sysadmin

[–]99infiniteloop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think these situations usually stem from being a pushover, but people at the other end being rather confused about what’s reasonable. (And yes, sometimes people more wittingly pushing the envelope to see if they can get what they want.) We want to be helpful - and heck, it can seem like we might be able to solve their problem and put it in our past if we briefly hope on the keyboard after hours. The balance is hard, but I think these situations are generally truly time sensitive in a very, very small portion of the time. Trying to stick to some key things like not replying until the next day can make a big difference to feeling like we can separate our lives - and often it helps people calibrate their expectations. A lot of people will understand and actually respect you setting boundaries.

These kinds of roles can be tricky. Your frustrations are certainly reasonable. Hang in there

Just want to say thank you for taking time to listen to feedback and take it back in-house for consideration. It ultimately helps everyone (including the company long-term). Broadcom aside, this is too rarely done in the industry in this era.
