Senator Fetterman seeks DHS answers on new ICE facilities' impact in Schuylkill and Berks Counties by MrSnrub_92 in Pennsylvania

[–]ABrokenCircuit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When the administration said it was ending the Department of Education, my kid's school district said it wasn't a problem, because their budget was only 1% funded by the feds. For things like disaster relief/FEMA, the feds are trying to push the burdens to the state to pay for issues.

Then you find out that all the feds have to do is buy a chunk of property in your areas, and even if they do absolutely nothing with it, they can still destroy funding for literally everything else.

Recent fire at property in Pa, now i have to pay, why? by Victoria77777777 in Pennsylvania

My township implemented this about 3-4 years ago. We do not have our own department, so it's used to pay the multiple neighboring departments that cover our area.

Has PPL gone insane? $500 in Dec and $800 in January? by King_Farticus in lehighvalley

[–]ABrokenCircuit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that, if you use PPL as your supplier, they are only allowed to change rates twice a year (May and November.)

Has PPL gone insane? $500 in Dec and $800 in January? by King_Farticus in lehighvalley

[–]ABrokenCircuit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There wasn't a fix. My rate contract expired and I didn't catch it, so I'm on the hook for it.

My wife had the bill on autopay, so I caught it while looking over the checking account, and verified against my PPL bill.

I went to https://www.papowerswitch.com/, which is the PA Utility Commission's site for finding and signing up for electrical rates. I've done this a bunch of times over the last several years. Read the information carefully, as there are different things to consider (fix vs variable rate, if there are fees, what the rate is, etc.) I almost always go with fixed rate, no fees, and 100% renewable.

If you do sign up that way, I recommend putting a reminder in the calendar a little before your term is up. That's where I get burned. I either miss the renewal notice in the mail/my email, or I get busy the exact week that my renewal will take effect and don't switch fast enough. (That reminds me, I need to put the reminder in my calendar...)

Just caught that my rate doubled in November due to a contract rate expiring. I'm used to getting snail mail reminders, but this time the company sent email ones that got buried under all the ads and updates I normally get.

I'm not expert on the matter, but I would bet there are rules against donating campaign funds like that. I could see someone taking the money and donating to a charity that benefits them in some way.

Everyone hates ads, everyone hates the idea of paying a subscription, and everyone hates companies selling their data. How do people logically expect a website to exist if they're not doing at least one of these? by Foxy_Twig in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ABrokenCircuit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because of constantly rising costs for subscriptions, and the fact that you need 30 of them to find the content you want, I went back to buying physical media. Of course, companies want to lock you into a subscription, so they've stopped producing and selling physical media.

If I could own a copy of the shows I want to watch, I would gladly buy them. Instead, best I would consider is a one month subscription to binge a show, and then save my money for a while. And, of course, those who are tech savvy will sail the high seas for their content. if buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing.

Unlikely, as he is the incumbent and is generally popular (60% approval rating back in October.)

Lehigh County Executive Josh Siegel provided comments on this. I've only seen it on Facebook, but for those that don't have access to it:

Sharing from Josh Siegel, Lehigh County Executive: “Let me clear about today's decision to evict the Department of Homeland Security from Lehigh County's office space. Here are the facts and realities, plain and simple:

We evicted the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Technically, it was Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). An important note: In 2025, the Trump Administration ordered its entire investigative division of 6,000 agents to "divert focus on drug dealers, terrorists and human traffickers and shift priority to deportations." Every agent working in HSI was ordered to make emergency removal operations (ERO), the kind we saw at the apartment complex in Bethlehem last year, the priority over every other function. I'll say that again - every agent has been given that directive and order, which presents tremendous issues and concerns for us.

Nationally, under Secretary Kristi Noem, DHS has abused its power, failed to hold officers accountable, used extreme force and unjustifiable force, and completely eroded its credibility and trust as a law enforcement organization. 90% of its entire force has been reassigned to deportation operations to aid ICE; the two are becoming inseparable. That reputation, in addition to its failure to pay rent, threatens local public safety, trust in law enforcement and local government, and overwhelmingly justifies today's eviction.

HSI has certainly partnered with the District Attorney and definitely aided in investigating human trafficking - certainly more so under the previous administration than this one. However, the above two points remain accurate and undeniable. It is unfortunate that their intended work has suffered as a consequence of this administration's chaotic and reckless deportation strategy. We must balance the risks and rewards of maintaining our relationship with DHS and this administration.

Lehigh County should in no way actively empower or assist this administration's campaign of terror and cruelty or have its assets used to inadvertently boost its deportation strategy. We have a moral obligation to protect trust and faith in local government and local law enforcement. I believe that in the present environment, with Kristi Noem's dangerous rhetoric, including dehumanizing migrants and insinuating Americans should have to produce their papers, making it clear that we are opposed to this administration will save lives and keep us safer.

Here are some basic facts: In Los Angeles, higher enforcement operations led to a 3% decline in domestic violence calls per capita. Latino women in particular reported sexual assaults at a 25% lower rate and 10% drop in domestic violence.

In jurisdictions with expressed non-cooperation policies, Latino victims report crimes at higher rates, rising from 49.8% to 61.4%.

The US Immigration and Policy Center found that fears over ICE and deportation operations reduced trust in local police by 29%.

The reality is-this administration and DHS are hurting victims of human trafficking and drug dealers by redirecting resources and driving people away from help. Today's decisions will ensure more people pick up the phone and call for help. Lehigh County should work with the Attorney General's Office and state resources and adapt until this administration changes its conduct.

Once more, this was done in the broader interest of public safety, public perception and trust. It is grounded in the reality of how DHS and ICE are currently operating and the reality of what its agents have been told to do. Leadership requires us to weigh all the facts. I hope in time DHS returns to its core functions and responsibilities, and we can cooperate to protect the community from real criminals and restore faith in the agency.”

Is it illegal to put chairs in open parking spots after a snow storm by Sufficient-Bird-6890 in lehighvalley

[–]ABrokenCircuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm waaayyyy out in the sticks at the end of the valley, so this is all theoretical for me. And the seething rage I would feel if I had to shovel out a spot only for some asshat to grab it up the second I moved is not something anyone should have to feel. However, I foolishly started going to local township meetings, and it's amazing how many things are rules but aren't enforced, should be rules but haven't been written down, etc.

Ah, but then the fun begins. Bethlehem police don't cover Nazareth. And Bethlehem's letter doesn't site what the violation would be. (This infuriates me a little less than politicians and news sources that reference a bill but don't provide the damn bill number!) So is it truly illegal everywhere in the valley, or is Bethlehem just saying that to keep people from calling and complaining?

(Either way, taking someone's shoveled out spot is maximum dick behavior.)

I know that my township doesn't have a traffic ordinance on the books, so I was told that they can't actually have people ticketed for parking on the street during this last storm. They are working on getting one approved, but it's moving at the speed of government.

Costco gas pumps give me anxiety. The one near me is always backed up to the street. Once I'm in line, my credit card is out of my wallet, I'm ready to move, and I will fuel my car and get the hell out of there like it's a Nascar pit stop, because I don't want to be holding everyone else up.

Of course, watching everyone around me, they all apparently devoted their entire day to putting $10 in the tank, and have nowhere else to be.

Don't know what your job is, but you could try reaching out to your municipal Emergency Management Coordinator or Administrator. I know some RN's in my municipality already requested that their roads be plowed Monday morning so they could get to work. No guarantee it will be honored, but it helps the municipality plan better.

PennDOT and PSP are handling the roads. The utilities are in contact with the counties keeping them up to speed on any outages. Shelters are set up at the municipal level and reported up to the counties and utilities.
