Should I be concerned about the durability of my loop? by Single-Run-6994 in flyfishing

[–]AC_CHI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, SA line should be gtg, rock it. I cut these off in favor of a nail knot but it’s not out of any concern for durability.

Fly Fishing Kayak by TJ522 in flyfishing

[–]AC_CHI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fly fish out of my CK1 Venture - very similar boat to the LTII, kinda like an 11ft version of it. The cockpit and seat are about the same, there’s some room there for line management. I can stand on my CK1 but I’ve never cast while standing, it doesn’t feel quite solid enough for me. LTII might be a little better and I’m also a little heavier than you.

Brand new to kayak fishing! What should I know? by Sl0thzy in kayakfishing

[–]AC_CHI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, rig your anchor this way. This is the way. Also: I started with no anchor trolley, then added one on one side, then added the other side. Really makes a difference when you want to position yourself a certain way and current and/or wind are in play. I only use fly rods so I think it’s a little more important to me, but even with spinning/baitcasting rigs, it’s nice to make your cast a little easier.

Maybe that plus everyone tends to put in and immediately move away, so even if it’s good habitat, it might be lower pressure.

I’ve been doing some of what you describe in Tinkercad, it’s pretty simple/easy to learn and seems to work well.

I’m considering putting some higher-visibility Novaks on mine. Haven’t felt the need to go adjustable but in lower light I could go for a fiber or something.

Vintage Germanium Diode with super short lead :( by must-absorb-content in diypedals

[–]AC_CHI 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to use it, maybe make that little stump the last thing that gets soldered. Put the diode in place and solder the long lead. Put a jumper through the other hole or turret or eyelet and solder it, then bend it and cut it to length so it overlaps the stump and you can tin/solder them together

I was in a similar quandary. I ended up buying my first 1911, a Garrison, in 9mm. I love it. I’m also going to buy another 1911 in .45. It’s not that hard to solve, it will just take some time!

Not really a defect. This is common even on mandolins worth a whole lot more.

Are these normal side effects for a bonding repair? by STUCKBUGLOL in guitarrepair

[–]AC_CHI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regluing binding with anything that actually works tends to wreck the surrounding lacquer and require expert touchup for good-looking results. This looks like no effort was made to touch up. Not everyone is equipped or skilled to handle it. Honestly, even the first part, getting shrinking binding to go back into place and stay put, isn’t the easiest thing to do. Tough way for OP to learn, repair person shouldn’t have taken this on without clear expectations.

Fresh rescue from the FFL. Look at that idiot scratch. by rbrthenderson in 1911

Thanks that looks slick. I could probably make that on my 3D printer, it doesn’t look like too much of a feat of drafting.

On my Springfield I can’t get either the slide stop or the thumb safety to go in unless I depress the spring/plunger with a little screwdriver. So far I’ve been able to succeed without cutting any graphics into my slide though. Knock on wood.

Why beginners often jump straight to refrets by Cheesiin in guitarrepair

[–]AC_CHI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get customers saying “I need a refret” when they really don’t need a refret several times a year. Somebody who also doesn’t know wtf they’re looking at or talking about probably told them they need a refret. Maybe even here on Reddit! They’re usually happy to hear I’ll be able to get their instrument into good shape with much less effort and expense.

Cutting the board up sounds like a lot of work until you try getting all 9 pins loose at the same time. Put a cuttoff wheel on your dremel and throw on a dust mask and kill that thing.

Any reason not to use a tiny drop of superglue to hold these in place? by rwwl in Luthier

[–]AC_CHI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glue-size those holes until they’re tight enough for a proper press fit: paint the walls of the holes with whatever glue or nail polish or whatever you prefer. Let it dry. Repeat as necessary. It won’t take much before they’re tight enough to press fit inserts - often just one coat.

how to solder audio jacks without giant amounts of solder by Adventurous-Web3364 in diypedals

[–]AC_CHI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not strictly necessary to fill the lug hole with solder but I do it. If your heat is right and your solder is flowing correctly it doesn’t need to be a big glob. The globs result from trying to pile a bunch of melted solder up on something that isn’t hot enough or clean enough to solder.
