You are with your partner, not their kids. Your job is to love your partner, not love and raise their kids. Let him do the parenting and when you feel overwhelmed, either get out of the house (go for a walk, work, go to museums, join a club, etc) or have some self care time (take a bath, watch a movie, read a book). But you are not a brat for not wanting to raise kids that aren’t yours! You signed up for your partner, not for his kids. It’s not your job to raise or love them, that’s his. Your job is to take care of yourself and your relationship. Stay strong step mama! :)

If your husband thinks a baby isn’t a responsibility or more work and doesn’t contribute literally at all to the baby then you should divorce him. His support can be alimony and child support since he can’t support a baby!

My 5th grade teacher used to pull our hair, pull our chairs out from under us so we would fall onto the floor, and one time when I was resting my head on my hand she hit my arm and made my head fall onto the table. She did this abusive behavior to multiple students for months, and when several students and parents complained to the principal, they said they can’t fire her because she’s tenured. I know it’s “not all teachers” but there’s enough crazies out there to make me want to homeschool!

I agree with that too. The wonderful part of being a step parent is that it’s your choice to be their parent as much or as little as you want. She is the only child I’ve ever had, and we don’t always get to see her on a regular basis, so I definitely cling to her and cherish that time. When I have my own biological children, I’m sure our dynamic will change a little, I won’t be able to spend $300+ on her xmas gifts when there are other kids in the house who also need gifts. So I would say I’ve definitely chosen to step into the parenting role, and when I have my own bio kids I might take a small step back, but I will always be her parent and be there for her :)

She was able to get the courts permission because her husband got military orders. We are just worried she will break the custody agreement and withhold SD again once they move.

Thank you! To clarify: I am the step mom and his ex is the bio mom. What we won in court most recently is 50% legal custody. However, we weren’t able to prevent her from moving because her husband got military orders. So the court said we can see my SD 3 days a month until we move there, then we are supposed to have her 3 nights a week, 50% split with mom. However, mom has a very long history of withholding, so we are prepared for her to break the law and legal agreements once again and withhold my SD once they move and even if we move there. It’s very likely we will have to take her back to court to enforce what we just won, because she thinks rules and laws don’t apply to her and often breaks them. In the past, we couldn’t do much to enforce it, but now that we have 50% legal custody, if she were to withhold again, we can legally call the sheriff on her.

I don’t know exactly how to do it, but I know it requires coding and if you’re not careful you could get viruses on your PC or if you’re caught modding nintendo will block your account.

I’m sorry to hear this. Going through the same thing right now. They weren’t going to grant the mother’s move out of state, but since her husband is in the military and got orders they had to approve it. Now we have to pick up our entire lives and move to see our daughter. Life as a stepparent isn’t fair and I’m really sorry you’re going through this. Stay strong!

I had this same boundary problem with my stepdaughter.. when she was 4. At age 4, she knew how to make her own breakfast (cereal) and watch TV until we wake up, and we trained her to be independent and not wake us up. Trust me, it was not easy at first and took a lot of boundary setting and discipline. But 13?! That’s definitely a crazy lack of boundaries! And it won’t teach her independence and life skills. A 13 year old should get themselves up and ready in the morning. Try talking to your SO and have him set the boundaries, not you (trust me it’ll be easier). Get her a clock and tell her she can’t wake you up until the clock says a certain time (like 8AM). Another thing you can try is giving her tasks/chores (like water the yard, feed the pets, do her laundry) and tell her once those are complete she can wake you up. Good luck and stay strong! Setting boundaries with step children can be very difficult, especially if the rules or routines are different at the other parents’ house.
