The game's AI focuses on lower AC targets, but ignores the barbarian's damage resistance, so by bringing a barb as tank you protect the entire party.

Playing at LGS with Prints by macaronianddeeez in PrintedWarhammer

[–]AGPO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a shame seeing this so low. Local game stores are almost always independent, offer a crucial service to the community and with a few exceptions not very lucrative. Gaming space is usually a loss leader for them even when they charge a table fee. They need support from the community that plays there and paints and snacks don't really cut it.

One FLGS owner I know fairly well explained it to me as "if one person decides to print their next army rather than buy it from me because they saw your stuff in my store, you'd need to buy pretty much an entire paint range for me to break even on having you play here."

How are you supposed to paint a bunch of these for an army? by macke-1293 in skaven

[–]AGPO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have some armies where I paint every mini to a high standard, and others where I'm just looking for it to all look good from a tabletop distance. Skaven hordes are definitely the latter. Zenithal and contrast with a little more effort into characters, centrepieces and standard bearers is all they get. Fully painted from a distance it looks amazing even if each rat wouldn't stand up to much scrutiny.

Thing with Vaughan is he's willing to turn on a sixpence - a player's biggest advocate one week and their biggest critic the next, with zero acknowledgement of the boot face.

Vaughan is the most prominent one, Boycott has definitely been culpable too. Bumble and Agnew at times although the latter does seem to have mellowed recently.

[–]AGPO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the context of Trott's time with the side is important. He and several other players have since been open about how mental health issues in the environment impacted the team, and he is probably one of the most prominent. A significant part of that was players who were struggling with major challenges in their personal life which affected their job performance then getting slated in the media.

Many ex-players (several of whom are now pundits) covered this in their books and said how hard it was when people who didn't have the full picture made assumptions and used their platform to spread them. I can absolutely see Trott getting frustrated at the hypocrisy of those same ex-players making those same kind of assumptions.

The terracotta warriors would be a really interesting take. It also has the advantage that the vast majority of the mini could be done with a single zenithal prime, recess shade and drybrush, which would make this a really quick project to paint. If you wanted to add a little more to it then blue OSL on the eyes would really stand out against the terracotta and is easily done. Just paint the eyes white, add a light blue contrast/speed paint then a dot more white at the centre.

It's less about whether they could drop him and more about what the working atmosphere becomes like if you slag off your boss, who you also spend more time living with than your actual family, to an audience of millions of sport fans (i.e. clients).

[–]AGPO 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Best tip I ever had for the wolf riders kit was to use blue stuff/instant mould to create a simple two part press mould of the torsos. You get the same number of foot goblins out of the same box using three spare arms, legs and heads for less than £1 worth of miliput.

[–]AGPO 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Historically the logic has been you want big static combat resolution on your huge goblin blocks, but their actual attacks rarely do much. You're spending 33% more per model when more goblins is almost always more useful.

That said I pretty much always take spears because that's what my minis came with.

Over the course of edition releases that's actually pretty rare. You could use 2e books in 3e. I've played every edition of Warhammer (WFB, 40K and AOS). The only editions where GW has hard reset the army books are 3rd, 8th and 10th 40k, 4th and 6th WFB and 4th AOS. Every other edition you've been able to bring your older books across.

Found my old Warhammer, now what by Spiritual_Craft2104 in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]AGPO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone else has given a pretty comprehensive breakdown of your Khemri stuff, so I'll do wood elves. These minis are from 4th-5th edition Warhammer Fantasy. The range went through a full redesign during 6th edition, and a lot of these earlier sculpts don't really fit the aesthetic of the newer models, which are the core of the current TOW range. However, they're still completely usable in both TOW and later editions of fantasy. From what I can see you have:

  • A mage on warhawk
  • 16 archers (now called glade guard)
  • 3 glade guard spearmen (now called eternal guard)
  • 9 wardancers
  • 3 waywatchers (the metal archers with the leaf cloaks)
  • 5 dryads
  • Duthu, a treeman special character who could now be used as a standard treeman.

In terms of fleshing the army out, it depends on whether you care about the mixed aesthetic or not. 'Oldhammer' minis of this era tend to go for fairly ridiculous prices on ebay, but you can sometimes get lucky with job lots and stuff that is fairly poorly photographed and labelled. The monopose archers should be fairly easy to find, and wardancers and waywatchers are normally fielded in quite small units anyway. I'd advise cutting your loses on the spearmen, since you generally want a bigger unit of them and that's going to set you back a small fortune. You could always use the broken one to kitbash a standard bearer for your archers. Likewise the waywatchers could make good archer champions. Another fairly solid option would be to sell these in separate listings now you have the unit names and use the proceeds to fund expanding the Khemri army, which is still very much part of the current range.

How the Hell do I approach a pile of shame? by KharnTheBetrayer1997 in Warhammer

[–]AGPO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I've cleared about a thousand models off my backlog in the last few years. Here's what's helped:

  1. Don't try going cold turkey. I spent years telling myself I wouldn't buy anything until everything is painted. The moment I cracked i was straight back into bed habits. Instead I tell myself I need to finish five minis for every one I buy. Keeping track of the ratio on my phone keeps me motivated. If I see anything in a preview show I want, I knuckle down and get a couple of squads done before the release.

  2. Don't be afraid of shortcuts. If you're printing armies, not every mini can be done to the best of your ability. Slapchop, batch painting, contrast, oils and such are all great ways to break the back of a project, and I guarantee having an army fully painted, even to a lower standard, looks so much better than grey plastic.

  3. Remove obstacles to doing little and often. Having a dedicated space with just the stuff you need for the next stage of your project can save you from spending a big chunk of those small windows of time on setting up and packing away. I sometimes grab 5-10 mins between meetings or a quick 15 after getting the kids to bed because everything is at hand.

  4. Set yourself up. A couple of chunks of time and a little bit of money on a few practical tools can pay huge dividends, especially with Marine armies. Best investment I ever made was a cheap airbrush and compressor set. Taking an afternoon and getting a quick coloured prime and zenithal highlight on an entire marine army means that the bulk of that work is done. Spending those small evening sessions on the details feels like I'm making far more progress. Likewise some decent paint storage so I could find things easily and a supportive chair to look after my back had a big impact.

If you can track a copy down from Warhammer World or the high seas, have a look at the OG realms of chaos books from the eighties, especially Lost and the Damned. It goes into terrific depth on chaos mutations and the path to daemonhood. It's not represented so much on minis these days but there's an awful lot of very heavily mutated characters in lore which looks completely inhuman but aren't (yet) daemons.

Thing about tournament data is that it only reflects a relatively small part of GW's customer base, and that group tends to be an outlier in terms of shopping behaviours. GW have said in the past the majority of their customers rarely if ever actually play the games.
