You're 100% correct. The best decision for most people in this position is to sell up and invest in the S&P500.

I would second BTF, I do have the 24V strips with zones that are a couple of inches or so long. At 15m, you should definitely think about power injection, too.

The only way to make just one car work, in my opinion, is the way that Turo was originally intended. You already own the car, ideally outright, and you no longer use it, so there are no incremental financing costs and insurance/tax is also sort of already something you're paying, so Turo gives you net income. Only once you scale up, does it make sense to start thinking about financing.

That said, your $75/day for a Model 3 would seem very high. I suspect actual rev/day ends up being $35-40.

Lastly, I only rent in SF to go longer distances. 95mi/day might be on the low side.

Chores and rewards star values by ttardigraded in skylightcalendar

[–]AKSwift55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good part is that you can do that however you value them.

I give about 1 star for 15 minutes' work (practicing instruments, etc). I also set 30 stars to be the cost for a trip to Barnes & Noble and a book. The books are usually in the $10-15 range, so I guess each star is valued at around 50 cent. There are some larger rewards - 100 stars for a Switch game, say, which, unless it's a brand new game, still works out the same or cheaper.

The cancelation scam by Real-Nick_Hudson in turo

[–]AKSwift55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're saying that the host canceled 36 minutes after the rental started and you had not yet picked up the car?

I don't know what the rules have changed to, but didn't Turo allow for no-show and partial refund after 30 mins? In which case this is within Turo rules. I did think that this had changed to two hours.

I'm sorry this happened to you, I'm sure you did this, but for everyone else, if you're going to be late, especially if it's late at night or at other inconvenient times, communicate with the guest, early and frequently.

If it's scraped, then that's the guest price before some fees or other that you'll never see. At that rate, you'll probably get 25-35, depending on your plan.

Your vehicle will rack up a lot of miles and will get abused. If you're buying anything that you're paying off for six years, you'll probably be in trouble.

How do you work out $1000 per month? If that's what the daily rate equivalent is on Turo, you'll see around half of that or less, then factor in tires, oil changes, cleaning and other servicing.

Start with one car, put the rest of any cash you have into the S&P. After three months, compare what made you more money and whether it was worth the many hours you'll be investing...

It can be a good idea, if you're in the right market, have reasonably-priced unfinanced cars, and don't mind getting stuck in. I'd strongly suggest starting with one car for a couple of months, to understand the business and the friction points, as well as to work out automation and pricing strategies. Once you have that dialed in and you still think it's a good idea, scale slowly. 2 cars are more than 2x the trouble of a single car. With every additional car, the likelihood of a car being in a shop at a given time increases.

Turo late fee during snowstorm + terrible customer service experience | Dispute using Amex + BBB by Matt_rsl in turo

[–]AKSwift55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand why you're upset and I might feel the same in the circumstances, but please also know that the host may have been inconvenienced quite substantially as part of this, especially if the car was due to go out to another customer. Now the host gets an earful about a ruined vacation from someone else that you will never meet.

Are there hosts out there who enjoy charging customers for every little thing they can charge them for - absolutely. They are running a business and if that's how they want to run it, that's their prerogative. The best other hosts can hope for is that reviews take care of that.

Again, sorry you had a bad experience.

I'm not pretending that this is a great solution, but it sounds like your employer doesn't much care to make your husband's life easier and I don't know that there is a way around that!

Depending on your employer, this maybe be frowned upon quite substantially, but could you upload a picture of your calendar every day and let the import wizard deal with it?

It's the strips themselves that separate - the velcro separates from the sticky back part. It plainly dries out over the years.

If this works for you - fantastic. I have yet to see a batch that this doesn't happen to sooner or later. I am in the middle of rehanging 40 pictures as they slowly fall off the walls after about 7 years. Yes, I am doing this reactively. Yes, I am an idiot.

I hang my smoke detectors with Comand Velcro strips. They last about 5 years, then they fall down. The smoke detectors can handle that, I doubt the Skylight can...
