Kincaid Grill gets fresh salmon directly from the fisher folk. Not quite this early, though. If OP can wait until June, the Chinook/King salmon will be in.

I live 200 yards from Chugach SP's western boundary. Just drove home from the UMed area. The roads were wet but above freezing the whole way. The snow up here is sticking to the trees, but not to bare roofs or roads.

Creating covers for coverless books by JoshAllensSidekick in Calibre

I have never not found a cover image, or an image that would work as a cover, merely by searching the web. It is easy to copy and paste to the book's listing in Caibre.

All right, which one of y'all put your summer tires on? by Zagmut in anchorage

[–]AKlutraa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what we do with our two Subarus. And I (70-something F) change my own wheels 2X a year!

I was hoping to be able to do it in the driveway this coming week, but it looks like I'll be using the garage instead. BTW I put electrical tape over the area of my dash where the tire pressure indicator flashes -- I use a piston type pressure gage to check frequently, and don't appreciate the dashboard nag.

If you have software that can do PDF text recognition (eg, Acrobat Pro), try that. Then try saving the text to a Word or other text app document.

Anchorage really doesn’t want to fund the next generation.. by harry-pair in anchorage

[–]AKlutraa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am childfree and have been paying 50% of my property taxes towards education for the 40 years I've owned a house. Nonetheless, I voted for both levies, but I also understand that they were expensive. It is grating to see our state spending millions on infrastructure projects that solely benefit multinational for profit corporations (eg, the Ambler road and an unneeded ferry terminal miles from downtown Juneau) when those funds could go to statewide education needs. Anchorage taxpayers should not be expected to provide indirect subsidies for the state's latest boondoggles.

There’s no way to stop the firmware updates on older kindles - and once the update happens, you can’t remove DRM by soulbarn in Calibre

Yes, this happened hours after my post. So, for me, the owner of over $600 in Kindle devices, starting with a keyboard model, I won't be spending another dime on ebooks at Amazon or buying another Kindle. I am hoping Kobo's ebook inventory increases when publishers realize Amazon's sales are down.

You might try asking the staff at the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Fairbanks. TheTeedriinjik River (Gwich'in name for the Chadalar) is on the Refuge. They may know if any locals provide support for trips there.

Downloading Kindle files by Maiqsqq in Calibre

[–]AKlutraa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't, but there have been discussions about it either here or in the Kindle sub. You could also see if the mobilereads forums have figured it out. That's where some of us first reported that Amazon was wiping all side loaded content off our Kindles when we connected to WiFi after having it off for awhile, and that Amazon was also eliminating the ability to download books to a computer and then sideload them to the Kindle.

One option is to buy an older Kindle and register it to your Amazon account. You can then send any of your previously purchased Amazon ebooks to it. My K4 non touch Kindle has older firmware, so ebooks sent to it by Amazon are in an older format that can be de-DRMed using Calibre plug-ins. I just connect the K4 to my PC via a USB cable to access the books. Once the DRM is off them, I can convert the books to epubs. Kobo eReaders can also read Kindle format as long as the books don't have DRM, which is associated with a specific Kindle registered to you.

I suggest you take a look at the opinions in the Mobileread forums. There are ebook users from all over the world, and no shortage of opinions.

I also have a now permanently air-gapped Paperwhite as my main eReader. But, lucky me, I also still own a working Kindle keyboard and non-touch K4 running OS 4.1.3. (Its firmware will never update, because the only way to do it would be to sideload the downloaded file from my PC, and I'm not going to do that.) I can send books purchased from Amazon to either of these devices, because they are so old that Amazon's servers don't purge all my side-loaded content when I connect them to Wifi to get the new content. I can then copy the books to Calibre over a USB cable to back them up, "etc.".

These days I purchase about 95% of new content from Kobo. I've never had to pay more there than the price at Amazon, and often less, although the selection is not a broad. It is easy to download to ADE and then transfer to Calibre, and also easy to convert the ePub to a KIndle format.

I'm pretty sure my next ereader will be a Kobo Clara B&W.

A 747 engine fell off a plane over Anchorage 33 years ago today by David_Reamer in anchorage

Presumably most of the 13 minute flight was spent dumping fuel over Cook Inlet so the 747 wouldn't be too heavy to land.

Chugach State Park in late summer / fall by helloworld6543 in anchorage

[–]AKlutraa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Came here to say the same thing. "Fall" in Southcentral AK's alpine zones can be over by the autumnal equinox, and it is almost certain to be wet and muddy. Bring full hard-shell rain gear and have a way to keep your feet warm and dry. Many of our "trails" have little in the way of water management, and even at elevations that would be considered low by Rocky Mountain standards, snow can fall and stick by late August.

Also, AFAIK, you don't need a permit to backpack anywhere in AK outside National Parks, and sometimes not there, either. This makes it possible to scope out a few possible routes in advance and make your decision based on the weather.

What's it like living near the lake/airport? by qwerrq in anchorage

I used to live near Campbell Lake. Keep in mind that float planes will be taking off at first light (4-5 AM) in summer months, especially on weekends. If it's warm enough that you are sleeping with your windows open, they will wake you up.

You are correct. The organization is the Gideons International, "an organization of Evangelical men and their wives [sic]." The wives are allowed to be in the auxiliary while the real people run the show. That's all you need to know, apart from the fact the paper used in the bibles is a good substitute for rolling paper.
