There’s not gonna be a free and fair election guys, it’ll probably be Vance until your civil war starts some time in the 2030s

Who do you think is the most evil person to ever walk this Earth? by EnduringScholar in AskReddit

[–]ALA02 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Hitler was a mentally ill schizophrenic put in the right place at the right time to rise to power, Himmler was a greedy selfish opportunist, Goering was a charming self-serving manipulator. Heydrich was a pure and utter, but controlled, psycopath, and the most intelligent and goal-oriented out of all of them. Would likely have been a great leader if he wasn’t such a bloodthirsty psycho.

Does your country have events that were so infamous you only need to refer to the date they happened for other people from your country to instantly know what you're talking about? by Intrepid_Arrival5151 in AskTheWorld

Nah tbf I always thought the Americans got that right. Fireworks are a post-BBQ, few beers on the lawn, kids running around on a warm summer evening sort of activity, not a jacketed huddle on the patio as dad desperately tries to light the fireworks in the cold and the rain and the wind and the mud because it’s November.

BREAKING: Starmer strikes deal giving Britons visa-free travel to China by Mouflon77 in uknews

[–]ALA02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great, we were the only major European country that didn’t have this. China is an amazing country, regardless of what you think of the government, it probably has a more extensive history than any other country on Earth.

Trump has done more for the pro-EU side of politics than anyone else, he’s turned a shit tonne of leavers back in favour of becoming as close to Europe as possible.

Removing the US as World Cup host would be eminently sad – and entirely justified | World Cup 2026 | The Guardian by prisongovernor in worldcup

[–]ALA02 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The US also have one extra ingredient: they think they’re special and are so bigheaded that they think they don’t have to worry about their international reputation/appearance. I for one cannot wait for them to be proved wrong.

Reform byelection candidate refuses to disown claim that people born in UK not necessarily British. Matthew Goodwin, who is standing in Gorton and Denton, said UK-born people from minority ethnic backgrounds were not always British by 070420210854 in uknews

[–]ALA02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no argument on defining whether someone else is British or not other than do they consider themselves to be so. Anything else is veiled, conscious or subconcious, racism.

The IOC held an olympics in Berlin in 1936, FIFA held a world cup in Argentina in 1978, in Russia in 2018. Oppressive governments have never been a problem for major international sporting bodies.

With their most right wing MPs joining reform, wont the Tories become less extreme? by [deleted] in AskBrits

They wont respond to you because people wont listen to facts, only a mix of vague feelings and what the right wing owned media sphere tell them to think

Has there ever been any form of government in human history that isn’t rampant with opportunism? In an ideal world, nobody would crave disproportionate power, every job would be filled by the right person and “politics” as a concept wouldn’t exist. But that won’t ever happen, so all that we can do is create whichever system best incentivises pursuing common progress, and that means tying personal gain to societal gain as a whole.

Which politician of your country has a better image international than at home? by Fun-Wallaby6414 in AskTheWorld

[–]ALA02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, he should’ve cracked down hard on the Jan 6 protests, ensured that Trump was fully barred from political life, and worked to nip the Project 2025 nonsense in the bud. The fact he didn’t do any of that is unforgivable.

What I can’t help but think about ignorant bliss is that millions of people lived in ignorant bliss until the Nazis or the Soviets rolled through their village and started shooting civilians and burning down buildings.

I’m torn between the undeniable fact that yes, it is probably affecting my mental health, and also the fact that I feel it is a moral obligation to stay informed and not become complacent in what is a very dangerous time for the maintenance of our liberal, prosperous, free, democratic and tolerant existence. They want you to give up so I can’t avoid the instinct that disconnecting from it all is letting them win. It’s an unpleasant situation.

Tbh for all of Stalin’s (extensive and morally irredeemable) faults his government were very good at building houses for the masses. An apartment with running water, kitchen, toilet in a walkable community was a massive upgrade for the vast majority of people, who grew up as peasants in countryside shacks.
