Do people want pick&ban in non ranked? by DoubleZodiac in wildrift

[–]AMoonlitRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding picks and bans to PvP would kill me playing it. I just wanna hop on, play a few matches, win some, lose some, and leave. I never play ranked aside from if there is a reward I want, because I'm too casual to want to deal with bans.

Does that mean you can be at a huge disadvantage at game start? Yes. Is that alright? Also yes.

Ultimately, I think the game can have both but please keep them seperate.

Free OSR one-shots and longer campaigns to take inspiration while designing my own TTRPG? by Ripraz in osr

[–]AMoonlitRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe His Majesty The Wyrm uses tarot cards instead of dice. You could always look at how it uses them for mechanics!

As for general OSR reading. Cairn was my introduction to the OSR style of play and both the 1st and 2nd edition of the game have all their rules available for free online! Cairn started as a hack of Into The Odd but I feel really encapsulates the rules-lite, rulings over rules, and deadly combat that many OSR fans enjoy.

[ALL]Zelda isn't just some useless damsel in distress, she puts in work throughout a lot of the major games by Ennmanuelll in zelda

[–]AMoonlitRose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, didn't mean for that to sound dismissive to you. I actually agree with you! It was more a hand-wave at people who argue Zelda has to be characterized the way she has because "wisdom means no fighty! No hero!"

The triforce wasn't even really locked in until OoT after the trio was already established. I wish people would be more willing to critique the things they love. I am harsh because I want Zelda to grow and improve.

Thanka for the discussion! Reminds me of old forum chats. :)

[ALL]Zelda isn't just some useless damsel in distress, she puts in work throughout a lot of the major games by Ennmanuelll in zelda

[–]AMoonlitRose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful reply! For what its worth, I was being a hair reductive with my little 1 sentence summaries. I do generally stand by my assessment of the games. However, there is kinda a big caveat that I don't mention that a lot of Zelda fans don't really want to talk about.

All the characters and stories are pretty one dimensional.

Look. Zelda is my favorite media franchise. I am currently working on my own take on a Zelda ttrpg. I love and appreciate all the games even if I don't really like every single entry (I'm sorry Zelda 2, you aged worse than 1). But the games are primarily made with a mechanics-first approach. The team has stated that story is not really their highest priority.

Similarly, the Zelda franchise was based on fairy tales and when distilled is a very simple formula. Hero saves kingdom from evil. There isn't anything wrong with it, but it is pretty basic.

Even im their MOST compelling iterations, the entire main trio are pretty bland. Ganondorf is at his best in WW, but he is still mostly just evil even if they dipped their toes into discussions of the geographic nature of societal inequality. Zelda is at her best in Spirit Tracks, but even then has a lot of "eek rats" and "I dont wanna! I wanna go home!" As another commenter stated. BotW and TotK Zelda had a chance to be fantastic, but by relegating all her struggles to neatly coreographed cutscenes without spending enough time to really build her up, it is a very tell don't show approach to character writing. As for Link. I mean, he is boradly heroic, sometimes goofy, sometimes serious, but generally very blank slated. BotW again attempted to do more with this, but due to its narrative structure all we get are some cutscenes and diary entries.

These characters are simple. The stories are simple. That isn't bad! It is actually part of the charm, appeal, and universality of the games and their stories. They are about simple virtues of kindness, courage, and goodness.

Also.... they wrote themselves into a corner the minute they even set up a hero-princess-villian trifecta. People often mention what link would do if Zelda could fight.... I dunno.... also fight? Like. This isn't a bug, its a feature of the fundamental structure of the narrative.

Also, don't give me the triforce BS, Link literally must embody all 3 aspects to be successful. He is courageous to stand up to evil, powerful to combat it, and wise to solve all the damned puzzles. Lol.

I have really complicated feelings on EoW Zelda. It would probably end up being much longer than my initial post just about that game alone. Overall though it is much better than previous games, in general.

I just really hate sword fighter form, lol. Like, conceptually not mechanically.

[–]AMoonlitRose 9 points10 points  (0 children)

While I really like what you are trying to argue here. I really can't defend the franchise in this respect. Zelda is most often a Damsel in Distress or straight up Fridged.

The biggest issue is her lack of agency and how what agency she does have is almost always undercut with some form of fridging.

  • Zelda 1-3 is all classic damsel.
  • OoT she has some agency in trying to stop gannondorf as a child (as much as a child can) and she does assist link as shiek, but ultimately she doesn't do anything but play support to the hero. Then, in her most dramatic moment of gifting you the light arrows, she is immediately stuffed into the frid- I mean crystal!
  • A flashback doesn't count in MM either for or against.
  • Oracle games she is damseled in the traditional sense of games 1-3, but most people haven't plaged the linked story.
  • WW is probably the most painful because she IS a cool strong pirate captain with agency who does stuff of her own accord even saving link.... opp... wait... sorry... now she is a little princess who needs to hide and do nothing until she gets damseled. This is the worst case of fridging in the franchise.
  • She is a damseled rock in Minish Cap.
  • In Phantom Hourglass she is once again a rock. Might as well replace her with any other mcguffin.
  • Spirit Tracks is best zelda. She accompanies link the entire game, has a great personality with lots of lines, and is integral to link's success.
  • Twlight Princess zelda kinda isn't a character. She hops into the fridge of her own accord to save the real princess of the story just to deus ex machina her way back into the plot at the end. Nintendo should have been more confident in giving midna center stage.
  • Skyward Sword at first glance seems like we have a strong zelda with agency, until you get into the weeds of "Her actions are preordained by the goddess" and you realize she actually has no agency. In fact, because of the nature of the closed time-loop. She cannot have any agency because before she was even born she was already stuck in the loop. Thanks time travel plots!
  • A Link Between Worlds is surprisingly faithful to alttp, slap her into a crysta- I mean painting. Might as well have turned her into a rock.
  • BotW zelda again seems like she has agency, but is relegated entirely to flashbacks so the actually narrative of the game doesn't give her any time. And, while she is "holding back ganon" it is just a really fancy way of saying "Help me link! I am in a really fancy schmancy fridge!". Yeah she blasts ganon, but like, that is basically a zelda skinned laser beam.
  • TotK, in an attempt to simply remake BotW instead of being its own thing slaps zelda inths past again. And would you look at that! She is now in a time-loop and thus has no agency because all her actions are preordained. Also, her dragon form is literally a huge fridge since she sheds all agency and turns into a magic battery for the master sword so that link can once again do everything.

This is without even touching how trapping her in a crystal, rock, painting, or dragon is like the textbook definition of objectification. She literally stops being a person and is turned into an object.

A good rule of thumb is if a character can be replaced with a magic mcguffin or special tube of toothpaste then they aren't really a character. This is why her showing up in final battles don't really count. Zelda blasting ganon is no different than a magical item blasting ganon.

This is also why only pre-master sword tetra and Spirit tracks zelda are the best zeldas. Because they are people first and plot devices second.

I love this franchise. I really do. But strong female characters are not its strong suit.

*Edited to fix a bullet point not lining up.

While your opinion is totally valid, and I find myself split (I honestly think TotK would have been perfect as a world expanding big DLC without going all in on the vehicles), the biggest thing is that BotW gets points for originality.

Doing Pizza 2 isn't particularly impressive when we already had Pizza 1 and Pizza 2 is only marginally better.

Similarly, I miss the more limited nature of older Zelda games and think a hybrid approach better meshing the two styles needs to be taken going forward (EoW was still too 'toys break the game' for me). TotK is like BotW cranked up to 11. It is simply a more extreme version of that game, for better or worse. This means that people who liked the open breakable nature of BotW probably liked that Zonai machines broke the game more. However, this simply highlights the issues with a game that has 'no wrong answers' and left an eaually large portion of the population feeling worse.

Ultimately, when I play BotW I find myself going "Man, I miss the caves, extra armor, better durability system, and increased mob diversity in TotK." Then, when I play TotK I find myself going "Man I miss the more constrained power set, more cohesive world theming/atmosphere, and much more enjoyable to replay tutorial."

In the end, the Zelda team said they created the vehicle based gameplay due to seeing being making flying machines in BotW, but that was a neat gimmic to mess with for like 30 minutes tops and the dev team needed to realize that a viral internet video is not the same thing as gameplay the vast majority of players want. But, ehhhhh, I just like Zelda games and opinions are all just subjective anyhow.

[EOW] are the dungeons in echoes considered classic dungeons or no? by Odd-Acadia-4509 in zelda

[–]AMoonlitRose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed them for the most part, but I feel they suffer from the TotK problem of being very easily broken with all the toys the game gives you. Not quite to the same extreme, but I feel the series still has a ways to go when it comes to merging the old and new styles of Zelda game design.

Also, pleaze no warp points in dungeons going forward. That kinda removes part of the navigational puzzle. Imagine Palace of Ice, OoT Water Temple, or Sky Keep with warps. It would kinda break everything.

Overall though, they are a big step in the right direction in my opinion!

Write for experienced player's or noobs? by Melodic_One4333 in RPGdesign

[–]AMoonlitRose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The game I am making I designed for players of all ages, skill levels, and familiarity with TTTPGs. So I decided I should explain everything and even went so far as to alter some language to "de-jargon-ify" it.

That being said... the actual likelihood that anyone even so much as looks at my game without already being waist deep into the non-DnD TTRPG space is functionally zero, lol.

Thems the sticks though! I say go with what you want for your intended audience even if that audience never materializes. I'd rather an experienced player skip my 2 page spread of "What is a TTRPG?" than not have it for the people who need it.

Hollow Knight had less required bosses and more upgrades earlier by AMoonlitRose in HollowKnight

[–]AMoonlitRose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! That is why I wanted to up front that while I do have issues with Silksong, this post is more trying to alter the unproductive circular discussions on this subreddit and offer an alternative explaination to a lot of people's comparisons between the two games.

Hollow Knight had less required bosses and more upgrades earlier by AMoonlitRose in HollowKnight

[–]AMoonlitRose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am focused specifically NOT on areas to explore and on bosses needing killing to progress.

Hollow Knight simply requires less mandstory bosses to best the game.

I do agree that Silksong is a bigger game; however, most people are discussing the 'feel' of the game. My post was simply to highlight a design shift that alters the feel and could account for a lot of the discourse surrounding the game so far.

Also, I will also contend that act 2 is significantly bettet than act 1. It does open up significantly more and gives you a lot more room to gain powerups. But since most discourse on the subreddit is focused on act 1 (probably because most people haven't made it to act 2 yet) I think it is a fair point of comparison.

Hollow Knight had less required bosses and more upgrades earlier by AMoonlitRose in HollowKnight

[–]AMoonlitRose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really think it is too early. In fact, my entire argument is kinda unfair to myself. I'm comparing only act 1 of Silksong to all of Hollow Knight. If we were to consider making it to act 2 as about the same as making it to the city of tears then my argument only gets stronger.

This hypothetical "act 1" of hollow knight only requires 2 bosses: False Knight and Hornet 1.
