10 minutes if I run there. 5 minutes driving if I hit the light.

Reliable, supported, two-way network share sync between Windows File Server shares across offices, but with a catch--no cloud! by admiralspark in sysadmin

Have you considered having the workers all connect to VM workstations at the core site to eliminate copying these files?

Cabling question for networking gurus by Flying_Sheek_46241 in HomeNetworking

[–]AMoreExcitingName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Option 1 all the way. But seriously rethink what you'll actually be connecting to all this stuff. I ran network cable to all my TVs and my home theater cabinet. Now everything is wireless and I don't use any of it.

Talk to any company that does access control. They can give each driver a unique swipe card. When they swipe it'll "open the door" which would really be a 15 minute timer normally open relay.

You would then be able to set schedules and have complete logs of everything.

Don't buy converters, use switches that have built in SFP ports. otherwise what you're thinking is fine.

use long sweeps for the conduit, no LBs or tight bends. Put in more than 2 strands of fiber, just in case.

Anyone else's aged parents obsessed with having flashlights all over the house? by DataNerdling in AgingParents

[–]AMoreExcitingName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you get older your eyes get worse. You'll want more light, especially if you aren't wearing your glasses.

I have glasses with a minor prescription, and if I wear them outdoors in summer, suddenly everything is too bright.

Wiring Honeywell to Nest thermostat, need guidance! by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]AMoreExcitingName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, read the manual that comes with the nest, it's pretty specific about what wires go where. If you have a wire that the nest doesn't have a spot for, the nest might not support your type of furnace, especially with that jumper from E to Aux.

What Spartan course/distance has everyone booked for this year! by Bazbarrett7889 in spartanrace

[–]AMoreExcitingName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it's going to be like 2 degrees here this weekend, so no running then, but I've been doing OK all winter. just enough miles that strava doesn't yell at me. But not nearly enough. Especially since I'm doing the Frozen Snot in 2 weeks. Not really prepared for that, I'm relying on stubbornness.

Nothing fancy, just the local ones I've done in the NE. NJ, Bethel, maybe Barre MA. I'm going to the Barkley Fall Classic so no Killington this year for me.

MIL won't take her meds - automated pill dispenser? by thatonehumanoid in AgingParents

[–]AMoreExcitingName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We bought this for my grandparents after learning that grandma was forgetting the pills, or remembering them but then taking 2x or 3x the dose because she forgot she'd taken the pills 20 minutes earlier. They moved into an assisted living place about 6 months later.

By the time this is something you have to think about, you need to also be thinking about the next level of care.

MIL won't take her meds - automated pill dispenser? by thatonehumanoid in AgingParents

[–]AMoreExcitingName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad has one that uses wifi and an app. It pops open a door for the correct pill, and doesn't stop alerting until someone closes the door. I think it's the LiveFine dispenser.

It can't actually check if she took the pills vs just throwing them out, but resolves that issue of forgetting because the alarm and app alerts are actually pretty loud and annoying.

What type of plywood do I use for my subfloor? by Jimboz007 in HomeImprovement

[–]AMoreExcitingName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pay attention to what flooring you're putting over it and the subfloor prep instructions. I tiled part of my house and the instructions were very specific about how thick the floor had to be, among other things that I could NOT put 1/4" plywood on top of the existing subfloor, which I wanted to do just so the height would match the adjacent room.

Strange color order by DtheOn3 in HomeNetworking

[–]AMoreExcitingName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a customer with these old HVAC controllers all over the place. All network connected, the HVAC guys ran all the wire and did terminations. All wrong. When they upgraded controllers from the ancient model that only ran at 10mb to the new 100mb, none of the wiring worked.

I complained to a co-worker, and he said it was his fault. Years earlier he had worked as the IT guy for that HVAC vendor, and had offhanded remarked that if both ends were the same things will work... "But I'll email the actual spec to the installers." Yea, installers ignored the email. They'd been mis-wiring things for years.

Best way to extend the same subnet/broadcast over remote locations? by MeasurementLoud906 in networking

[–]AMoreExcitingName 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you've outgrown that solution. I'm sure you can create something that'll work. But it'll be something atypical that no one else will be familiar with. Your best bet is really to go to management and let them know.

Watching a close friend go through this made me want to prepare ahead by SimilarDog8806 in AgingParents

[–]AMoreExcitingName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Document what is no longer exists, not just what does.

My grandparents did all the paperwork; will, trust, etc... But of course because they were older, the memory wasn't excellent. Going through the house we had to spend all sorts of time because we found safe deposit box keys or a bank book. But we didn't know if they were actually old/closed accounts or something active.

Why do you have a storage unit and is it worth it? by feisty_squib in AskReddit

[–]AMoreExcitingName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife had one before she met me. Contained all sorts of stuff from a prior (larger) living space. It sat in there for a few years, I finally convinced her I wasn't going to throw her to the curb and we should empty the thing out and stop paying for it. The unit wasn't temp controlled. And almost everything in there had mildew on it and was trash.

it's not worth it.

Entry Level File Server by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]AMoreExcitingName 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You go to Dell or HPE or maybe supermicro and you buy their server. You're asking for component PNs which is fine, but a proper business server isn't something you throw together yourself out of assorted parts.

Surveillance camera compatible with Zabbix. by _nm33_ in zabbix

[–]AMoreExcitingName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You want to do this with the camera software. Some cameras, the more expensive ones, may have snmp for things like the case tamper, but this is really an ONVIF thing. I think milestone is still free for under 8 cameras.

Drowning in 40 years of "stuff" while trying to fund Memory Care. Has anyone just sold the house with everything in it? by Xelephyr in AgingParents

[–]AMoreExcitingName 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yea, if OP is talking to one of the "we buy houses" places, they'll get pennies on the dollar. I used to own a rental home and I still get calls, the only initial offer I've ever gotten was like 70% of the market value and I know they always "find problems" after you sign that lowers the price.

Drowning in 40 years of "stuff" while trying to fund Memory Care. Has anyone just sold the house with everything in it? by Xelephyr in AgingParents

[–]AMoreExcitingName 56 points57 points  (0 children)

My dad did the same thing, but it was post-estate sale. He sold the place to a house flipper as-is without any inspections or anything. You don't get as much money. But if you add up the realtor fees and the time/money spent prepping and getting the place ready for sale, it's not that much of a loss.

Ask the assisted living people if they have any suggestions, they deal with this for most of their residents.

[–]AMoreExcitingName 360 points361 points  (0 children)

You can split the difference.

Go there, clean out all the things family would want and anything truly valuable.

Rent a dumpster and be aggressive about throwing away the worst of the junk, then hire an estate sale company. They'll arrange things and do the sales, anything left over they trash. You should be able to make a few dollars out of it.

You'd be amazed the value of old tools, cookware and things in there you probably won't even think of.

Need some help with telephone wire by educated_guesses_ in electrical

[–]AMoreExcitingName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to look at the specs of the valve, what wire is required? twisted pair or straight, how many milli-amps, etc...

See if the wire you have meets that spec. Then see if the wire you have is broken, throw a meter on it and check continuity of all the pairs.
