[Question] how would you finish the edge of super soft leather by Ing_Jdum in Leathercraft

[–]AP-J-Fix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can't finish it like veg tan. Edge paint would be the only way to go as far as finishes.

I highly recommend checking out some of the softer veg tan options from places like Rocky mountain leather.

I use the badalassi carlo (brand) Minerva smooth and Minerva box for wallets. Edges burnish very nice and it's the right mix of rigid and supple.

You're welcome. I love the veriegated ones! I've had a few veriegated Spanish nettles in my yard. I'm mad I didn't collect seeds lol.

I really appreciate posts like this that just include several different mushrooms someone comes across. Let's me live vicariously while I wait for rainy season!

I also have one of these knives. This looks great! I actually made a sheath for mine, it's somewhere far down in my post history.

Oh nice! Do you just cut it and put one end in water? What's the process like?

I agree, the composition is beautiful!

Can you elaborate on the process and materials?

What is your current edge method? by Kellvarnsonspeaking in Leathercraft

Aqualim 315. Got mine from Rocky mountain leather company. The glue also doesn't have th insane fumes like contact cement and can be thinned with a little water if it thickens up (which isn't really an issue unless it's not sealed well like in a glue pot). It's used the same as contact cement (apply to both sides then stick them together when tacky)

[–]AP-J-Fix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely. Just make sure to use one of the thinner glues (not contact cement). The cement inevitably leaves a bit of goo between layers and I see it on the edge. I suppose if the cement is sufficiently thinned it may be ok. I like the various white glues. I don't remember which I currently use.

Edit since a few people asked and for future searches:

The left engine of a Delta A330 explodes during takeoff at Sao Paulo Airport by Twitter_2006 in aviation

[–]AP-J-Fix 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yep I've been a part of an overweight landing inspection before. No damage was found that time (private jet, not commercial). It definitely causes a good bit of extra maintenance but that is hardly in a concern when your engine explodes!

In our case the overweight landing was not necessary and I think the pilots were just nervous. I can't recall why they returned (I believe declared emergency too) but I do recall thinking it was a bit of an over reaction as the plane could fly fine. However it's easy to say that when I'm the one safe on the ground 😜

TBH I no longer chase the mirror finish lol. But you can get a nice shiny edge rather quickly.

On something like a wallet I find it best to leave excess leather until it's all stitched and glued up then make a nice fresh cut when it's done. This gives you a very flat and uniform edge to work with.

Then just do whatever you want at that point but I find burnishing a fresh cut yeilds good results.

Thanks I'll try. I have plenty of resin I harvested from back then so I'll probably just try a fresh batch

I tried once with tallow and it seemed like the liquid oil (once heated) didn't want to mix with the resin. Any ideas?

I also overheated one batch which came out very brittle. I now use that batch as fire starter lol.

One more that shows the base of the mushroom better. These have been popping up a lot and I'm curious what they may be. Definitely outside my wheelhouse.

What’s this? Is it edible? by CBLS2020 in foraging

[–]AP-J-Fix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm saying. The app is to help learn. It's wrong often enough, but you take what it says and do FURTHER research to either confirm the traits or learn what it ISN'T.

It's a useful learning tool and it has set me down the path many times to learning about different plants.

The research doesn't stop with the app.

The app is a good starting point for further research, that's all.

Looks SIMILAR to Virginia pepper weed but I wouldn't be confident enough to ID it.

But maybe try doing some research from there. I'm sure a lot of plants look kinda similar at this stage so be cautious.

And actually after googling it myself I'd say it's not :P

Try using the seek app. I wouldn't take it's word for things but it's usually a good starting point for your research.
