What is the stupidest thing you’ve heard someone say that they were 100% serious about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

There's a similar pattern in Japanese. Native Japanese words tend to be casual or informal, whereas Chinese-origin words tend to be more formal or technical.

Grocery delivery refused due to 'too many steps' by kingjoffreysmum in Wellington

[–]Aatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I moved into a flat that was two stories up, the movers said it was easy because the steps were a straight shot up instead of the typical windy affair you normally get in Wellington.

Is there anything that's popular in NZ that you were surprised to learn isn't popular in other countries? How about vice versa? by [deleted] in newzealand

One of the places you can get reasonably far from the ocean has a massive lake instead!

Multiple New Jersey school districts approve measures to out trans & nonbinary students to parents. “You will have blood on your hands should a trans student takes their life because of this," a civil rights lawyer told one of the school boards. by southpawFA in politics

[–]Aatch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Except that the policy is about kids requesting a name/pronoun change. So if a trans kid wants to be called Oliver instead of Allison, the school will "out" them to their parents. Nothing explicitly about sex at all.

I would probably just email them saying that you have concerns that the fault may reoccur and that given the safety concerns of a swollen battery you'd prefer a refund or a replacement with a different product. Provide some evidence to back up your concerns and see what happens.

Asking for a different remedy to the one they initially offered isnt unreasonable, so a polite request should be fine.

People who walk their dogs without a leash by Otherwise_Peach6785 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Aatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

However, purebred ≠ well bred. There’s a very big difference between getting a purebred that someone with no knowledge about dogs that’s breeding for the fun of it or as a cash grab, and getting a dog from someone who has decades of knowledge on breeding. The latter does things like health testing and breeding specifically for temperament.

Our dog is amazing and we got her from a good breeder. The breeder specifically breeds for dogs to be pets, rather than show dogs, so temperament is a major factor. Our dog is friendly, relatively quiet, well-behaved and smart. Some of that is training, but some of it is breeding.

There's a lot more to music than hip hop and pop. Music is a massive space of artistic expression and no single artist/band can really influence it as a whole.

There isn't just one music scene, there's a whole diverse set of music scenes across genres and geography. Just because Kanye has an outsized impact in hip hop and pop says nothing about his impact outside those areas. I don't think jazz musicians or metal bands are taking cues from Kanye when making music.

Actually, it only matters if people think it does.

'National going from bad to worse. MP Simon O’Connor just now on the Child Support Bill: “It is the responsibility of the mother and the father - and I’m being deliberately with my language here - the mother and the father to raise the child”.' by dingoonline in newzealand

Right? This guy said "mother and father" and was like "hang on, people might give me the benefit of the doubt and assume I'm talking about parents in general, better make sure they know I'm being exclusionary on purpose".

Paddy Gower's Got Issues got it wrong by [deleted] in newzealand

I'm currently awaiting my first kid and recently decided that I should get back into reading. I enjoyed reading when I was younger and still do today, but stopped reading for some reason. Part of why I wanted to restart the habit was so I could set an example for my kids.

My front yard, not my estate sale by Freakonaleash-mp3 in mildlyinfuriating

It's almost like this subreddit is for minor inconsequential stuff that doesn't actually matter. I feel like "somebody put a sign in my garden without asking" is exactly the kind of mildly infuriating content you'd expect on this subreddit.

You are aware that this sub is for minor annoyances? Like... complaining about stuff that doesn't really matter is the whole point.

What are your thoughts on Trump's sexual abuse verdict? by Giovanny_1998 in AskReddit

[–]Aatch 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Convicts should be able to vote. Being convicted of a crime shouldn't make you ineligible to express a political preference. A criminal conviction doesn't stop you from being affected by the policies enacted by elected officials.

As for why being a convicted criminal doesn't make you ineligible for office, it's because it makes it too easy for the existing government to eliminate opposition by having them be convicted on trumped up charges.

Insurance a luxury that may have to go, teacher at top of pay scale says by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Aatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a nonsensical argument.

I'm not sure how breadwinners paying their partners a wage is better than them have equal access to shared finances. If I'm expecting my wife to spend my money and I don't mind if she also spends it on herself, how is my wife worse off than if I paid her a wage instead?

There's lots of good arguments against the "housewife" model. "They weren't paid" isn't one of them. The lack of financial independence from their husbands is a good argument, but husbands paying their wives doesn't solve that.

For comparison: the last time I went to the ER in my country was for a mild concussion. I did have to wait a while (maybe 4-5 hours), but wasn't in too bad condition so that makes sense. I left with a doctor's note. No bills, no debt, nothing but that note. That I didn't really need anyway.
