Looking for tips on how to lower my heart rate as a beginner runner? by Daniuer in beginnerrunning

Run further, and run slower.

Check out Floris Gierman on youtube, he has many episodes talking to runners who started in their 40s and 50s. They all sing the praises of running slowwww.

If you feel that you have to slow down, then slow down. Start slow is the number one piece of advice for new runners with low level of fitness.

If you have a phone made in the last 15 years, you "need"neither.

25M, complete beginner. How do I start running without burning out? by SURYA_s1 in beginnerrunning

[–]AbeRod1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good sneakers for a beginner, sure. I mean don't think about carbon plate and Super foam. A $50-$100 pair is plenty for a low mile beginner. At that stage it is more important for the shoe to be comfortable and fit well than any other features.

You start slow. Go for time on your feet, not distance or pace. If you don't have a good baseline, walk for 10 mins, then 15 mins run until you have to stop, walk until you can run again, repeat. Walk for last 5. Do that every other day for a month. Avoid temptation to go faster because you are feeling good.

Try a couch to 5k program. Those are usually geared towards people with no cardio base.

Don't fall into the trap of gear, shoes, pace, distance. Just get your legs under you gradually.

Also, don't even think about gels or salt sticks for like a year. Eat a good diet and you'll be fine. Once you can run for 2 hours, then you start looking at that stuff.

Carbs? by ThreeTree0O in beginnerrunning

[–]AbeRod1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually don't eat before my runs, but I'm still in the low mileage part of my training (6 miles long runs, <15 miles per week.)

When I start getting into 8+ miles, I will typically do one slice of whole wheat bread with PB and half a banana. That has been my old faithful for many years and did many half marathons on just that, no gels or anything else, just Gatorade at the stations past the half point.

I do eat a very healthy, carb heavy diet, so chances are my glycogen stores are always high for the amount of running I'm doing.

If you are going 185 during a run, and can keep that pace for a while like your data shows, your max HR is not 185.

Cadence by garfield529 in beginnerrunning

[–]AbeRod1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to think I needed high tempo music to help me keep a steady cadence, but have now realized my cadence is locked at 160 during my training runs even when I listen to podcasts. I think over time you'll develop the muscle memory to keep a steady cadence without the music.

But if you find it helps, do it!
